Idea good. The way they did it. Bad. Why? Holograms can't physically harm people! Unless your talking about causing heart attacks because your omni-tool projects a hologram of a Reaper with a pair of mittens and lip stick ^^.

I've explained two possible ways it could easily be handled in-lore, both in this thread and others.

It's probably omni-gel manufactured into a solid object that merely looks translucent, like an Engineer's Combat Drone. It could also be a suspension of non-Newtonian fluid suspended in a mass effect field like Grunt's Fortification ability. All it would take to have a temporary knife in that instance would be to have a sonic pulse running through the construct at the right frequency to keep it completely solid for the duration of its use.

It's going to feel strange for me seeing that blade when i never saw it in the other ME games. Not even seeing a blade strapped to their boot or armour like Tali.

Looks alot better than that stupid punch from ME2.

The movement is certainly greatly improved. But I had imagined a knife/dagger like for example the one from Assassin's Creed, which is functional, practical AND realistic instead of punching people with light. That might at best be confusing to the target why he is using that silly display when he's punching you and you get one or two free hits on the target, but otherwise it is just plain inappropriate.

Realistic? Dude, we're in space.

It's new technology.

You never saw Shepard charge through space and time as a Vanguard in ME1, either, but his new implant allowed him to do so in ME2.

Mass Effect needed an assassination ability in the worst way. I love the omni-blade mechanic, though I think it's corny that it's an omni-blade and not an actual blade.

It'll take some getting used to, but I'm sure it'll be great. Hell, every class is getting new KOs, so we shouldn't complain!

I don't like it either. I mean, I don't want to be unfair and say it's crap after just seeing it for like 30 seconds, especially since I was hoping for a better melee attackto begin with. But I was thinking of slapping enemies with my gun or maybe using a knife (you know, like the one Tali has). A large, glowing piece of equipment doesn't really seem to fit soldier Shepard.

Why not fight with stone clubs when we have firearms today?

Sure.. both can kill... but the guns do it better.

What good do you think a steel blade will have against hard body armor?

The omni-blade is some sort of super heated energy or something.... I'd be dissapointed if humanity were still relying on archaic steel blades as their form of melee combat some 150+ years from now.

That's like equipping our soldiers today with muskets instead of automatic rifles.

Looks painful. Strange that it has mass but is a hologram, but we see people "touching" their omni-tools all the time in the game, so it has some kind of interface that can be manifested and manipulated.

Touching omni-tools. Hey, new pick-up line, or, well, I'll just leave it at that.

I think the omni-blade is freakin AMAZING! I am honestly REALLY digging it! I was a bit skeptical at first, but as time passed I begin to think the idea was neat and when I saw it in action, "WOW!!" It's awesome! The way it sounds, and the way it unfolds as well as its' power is just sheer awesomeness :-)

The omni blade is a disgrace to the omni-tool, a rip from Halo and an appeasement to shooter fans.

I doubt the base omni-blade's effectiveness will have much at all to do with heat. It's far more likely a sonic-based "vibro-blade" or simply ultra-compact material. Upgrades might add a heated element, or perhaps one of the classes, like the Engineer, will have a unique heat-based blade.

I, for one, am excited to finally have proper melee attacks.

In ME2, they were already a big part of gameplay for me (I usually play the vanguard class), but hitting people with your elbow all the time just wasn't visually cool.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what the other melee moves will be like.

EDIT: Besides, omni-tools can also shoot plasma, disrupt shields, overheat weapons etc etc., so I don't see how an omniblade is inconceivable lore-wise.

The omni blade reminds me of an energy sword... but yeah, I'm cool with that. :police:

I don't understand why people are first complaining about the omni blade now when it was already mentioned, I mean think about it, what do you think it would be.

Cool idea, but also dumb at the same time because the omni tool is a HOLOGRAPHIC computer, light, whatever. Not a weapon that's solid, even with what people say.

What they sould have is:
a) a biotic blade for biotics
B) a retractable blade from a slot in the forearm part of the armor for soldiers
c) an energized "blade" of electricity for tech experts

Makes more sense, and doesn't appear on the armor of be distractive in any way.

I think it's no big deal. Its an auto kill melee attack..much better than regular melee attack. So..I like it! :D

Why aren't people having problems with Kasumi's Shadow Strike if the omni-blade bothers them so much? Because her attack works pretty much the same way minus the blade.

Remember that little ability called Tech armor? Shiny lights in the air that were shields? Some technology, I'm betting, just optimized for offense instead of defense.

I hope all classes get it, not just to new melee class. Though it's okay if that class upgrades to a more advanced one.

Soldiers 'today' still carry bladed weapons and not just for a can opener. I like the omni-blade idea. I'd like to see it with an Infiltrator play.

I don't know why it has to be a "hologram" blade though. I'm telling you it better do some damn-near magical s.... stuff to justify having a blade that can run out of batteries.

I don't think the omni blade looks horrible, but I'd have preferred more of a katar/punch- dagger type thing if it is going to be a short weapon. Something with more if a straight fast punch strike rather than the roundhouse cross body type move. This does look like what I was expecting the tech classes to use, I was picturing a trust mundane bayonet or knife for the soldiers.

I don't know, the whole "assassination move" thing seems to be trying too hard to be Halo Reach in my opinion.

The omni-blade is the same ****ing **** the Shadow Broker uses in LotSB.
It's the same **** as Tech Armor.
It's just a kinetic shield in the shape of a knife, a shape you can stab with...

Agreed. I suppose this is just the latest thing for the complainers to complain about.

A real blade would be more visceral.
