Well the good news is that it doesn't look as bad as the omni-blade on the place holder box art; that said the thing still looks terrible. I sincerely hope these omni-blades get redesigned because at this point in time they just look comically out of place.

Furthermore why the hell is a soldier using one of these things? Of all the classes out there wouldn't the soldier be the one that wields a good old fashioned vibro-blade or what have you? Seriously just have it as a retractable gauntlet knife like Republic Commando and bam my aesthetic issues with the thing are solved. Of-course that still leaves the problem of how an omni tool can create a blade that appears to have no physical components that is capable of gutting someone. Which of-course is compounded on top of all the things from ME2 that I'm still waiting on for an explanation... tech armor, reave, dominate, SB shield, Combat Drone, etc...

The omni-blade is some sort of super heated energy or something...

I doubt the base omni-blade's effectiveness will have much at all to do with heat. It's far more likely a sonic-based "vibro-blade" or simply ultra-compact material. Upgrades might add a heated element, or perhaps one of the classes, like the Engineer, will have a unique heat-based blade.

Aye, the point remains though, it's not some archaic technology like steel :) Steel can't cut through hard armor (or even certain soft armors used by prison guard's today)... so one would assume that in the future, steel blades went the way of the wooden / stone club and were replaced by the omni blade (be it sonic energy, heat, whatever).

A metal knife can be detected, confiscated, lost, and broken. Omni-blade apps can probably get through weapons checks and can't be permanently destroyed.

And what about a blade built into armor, like a wrist sheathe that springs out on command?  Perhaps made from similar materials to Shep's armor?  As to destroyed blades, well, we have this omnitool here...;)

It's still orange because combat drones are usually still orange? It's a construct created by the omni-tool. Why wouldn't it be the same color?

I always associated the drone's color being a "don't shoot me!" mechanic.  If Shep needs to know not to shoot at his own blade, he's got more problems than Reapers to worry about...

Here's another question:  Where does all that omnigel go when the bade is done?  Does the omnitool reclaim it?  Does Shep leave a trail of the stuff behind him wherever he goes (as well as used thermal clips)?

I actually just watched a demo where Casey Hudson actually calls the omniblade a "holographic blade"  I'm all depressed now.

That being said, I can't wait to use it

Just another case of "Rule of cool" and style over substance rearing its ugly head in Mass Effect. It just seems to get worse each time.

If you are at a demo, I wouldn't expect you to be overly concerned with presenting the lore of the game. A demo is all about showing that sweet, sweet gameplay. "Holographic blade" sounds like the kind of thing you would say to a friend when playing the game.

I'm sure there is a in-lore explanation for the omni-blade that is halfway plausible.

But mostly... HOLYCRAP DID YOU SEE THAT THING HE PUNCHED HIM WITH A GLOWY BLADE.

That was my reaction. Bravo, Bioware, bravo. The trailer has me giddy. And as I play mostly soldier I'm glad I know have a pop-out lightsaber all my own. :D

I have a theory for Reave. My guess is that it is a biotic attack that affects on either the molecular level or the cellular level, which would pull apart armor and disrupt the biotics of a biotic barrier.

As for Dominate, Morinth appeared to be able to use her biotics to subtly distort the thinking processes of her victoms, as allusioned in the journal entries of the girl that you investigate at the beginning of Samara's loyalty mission. It seems to me that it's a form of biotic pheromones, used on a greater scale when applied to using the skill in combat.

I think tech armor might just be a type of hardened shield. Engineer type characters seem to have a greater aptitude for using shields, giving them more possiblities and effectiveness.

Combat drones might be some type of VI, possibly similar to an early form of the Geth, having the ability to perform a single task for a limited amount of time.

Thing is it looked like crap game play in a shiny package.  It is a shooter hybrid, once you make melee better than guns you have trashed the game play.

But Tali's omni-tool is orange and her drone is pink.

My reaction:  I hope Infiltrators have something a little less gaudy.  Like a Hawke-style murder knife.

Fixed.

Really.  The first Mass Effect had the force, I mean, biotics in it, faster than light travel and a Giant, sentiant spaceship that looks like a lobster/hand coming out of the sky the first 10 min of the game...

It's allways been very interested in style as much as substance.  It is very much a spiritual successor to KOTOR than anything else.  And we all know what Star Wars was inspired by...

Its basically 'dogfights in space' which is a non-sensical conscept really.

Don't take my comment the wrong way.  I'm not belittling your opinion.  I'm just trying to get you to lighten up a little.  Games are fun no?

Exactly.

Look people-who-complained-about-the-trailer: This is E3. I too would've loved to see a trailer showing character interaction, LIs, cinematics, and a little bit of gameplay. But this is E3. If a game is up on stage, it has to wow as many people as is possible, and you just can't do that with a non-action trailer! It has to be big and explosive, or it will get lost amongst the louder and more vivid trailers that the "casual" audience (the majority of gamers) will notice.

That being said, I think the trailer they showed was epic beyond words. Better than ME1 and ME2's E3 trailers for sure. Only trailer to rival it, in my opinion, was Assassin's Creed Revelations (seriously, check that trailer out!).

Now, on the matter of omni blades, keep in mind that this is

a) very early in the development stage, so the weapon might just be turned into a omni gauntlet in the end, though it seems unlikely.
B) is just one of six unique class weapons.

Worked in Gears.  And its also the same basic consept as a shotgun.  Forces you to get up close.  It also seems to have a bit of 'wind up time' meaning that even a shotgun is better at gunning down multiple opponents at close range.

Nah.  Guns will allways be better.  Its why we use them.  Melee just looks cool.  :)

Unless the blade is introduced as a brand new piece of technology that was developed at the start of ME3, there are a lot of moments in the trilogy that no longer work if the Omni Tool technology worked like that. If they introduce it as new technology, I'll be perfectly fine with it. If not, I'm going to play the games again and point out every single moment that an Omni-blade could have come in handy.

As much as I liked KotOR and ME, I have to disagree with this. ME is a squad based shooter with RPG elements, while KotOR is a full on RPG. It's more true to say that DA is a spiritual successor to KotOR, while ME is a spiritual successor to Republic Commando.

Why are we looking for realsim in these blades? Mass Effect isn't a realistic game, come on. I think they're awesome.

I was replaying Haestrom again today with a soldier, and it seemed to me that the last part with the Colossus had a never-ending supply of Geth, advancing blindy into my position. The 'Omni-Blade' would have been a godsend had it existed in ME2, rather then meleeing a hundred times.

We (or I) am looking for consistency in how stuff works in the Mass Effect universe.  It's like how Morpheus explained the Agents in the Matrix:

I've seen an agent punch through a concrete wall; men have emptied entire clips at them and hit nothing but air; yet, their strength, and their speed, are still based in a world that is built on rules"

Even in a fantastical world, there are still boundaries and rules that define how tehe "magic" works.  These blades seem to violate, or stretch these rules until they scream for mercy.

As someone else has already asked how do mass lowering/mass raising or a fluctuating field drain life from one entity and give it to another?

As for Dominate, Morinth appeared to be able to use her biotics to subtly distort the thinking processes of her victoms, as allusioned in the journal entries of the girl that you investigate at the beginning of Samara's loyalty mission. Once again mass lowering/mass raising and a fluctuating field how do you get mind control out of any of these?

I think tech armor might just be a type of hardened shield. Engineer type characters seem to have a greater aptitude for using shields, giving them more possiblities and effectiveness.

The aptitude of the user isn't what is in question here. My question is this how does and omni tool which deals in plastics, ceramics and alloys for manufacturing create an area shockwave capable of knocking people down from 18 meters away.

Combat drones might be some type of VI, possibly similar to an early form of the Geth, having the ability to perform a single task for a limited amount of time.

My issue is not the VI that part is simple an omni tool could store a VI program and transfer it to an available platform when needed i.e. after the combat drone is created the program is uploaded to said drone. The issue is how do the three aformentioned materials used in manufacturing create something capable of attacking targets, moving around the battlefield and exploding upon death?

Don't even get me started on the SB shield I have no ****ing idea how that thing could ever ****ing work.
