I don't get how a holographic sword supposed to kill you? It's just a 3D image of a sword so it would just go right through you

Look at the codex entry for omni tool.  It can arrange particles into objects very quickly, so omni-gel could quickly be converted into a solid blade shape during combat.  Kind of like the drones from engineers; they aren't just holograms.

Well it's not holographic Forum :) It's most likely going to be a combination of the omni-tool creating a physical manifestation of force/solid material via ME fields or a kinetic barrier. We'll have to see the codex explanation, but it's definitely not holographic haha.

There is no "melee-centric class," that was a misconstrued piece of information that Christina Norman already corrected via Twitter.  There are the same six classes as there always have been.

Edit: I agree with you though about it seeming odd on a soldier.  However, it is consistent with the soldier favoritism that goes on with Mass Effect marketing.  Think of something cool, give it to the soldier.  It WOULD make much more sense given to omni-tool specialists (engineers, infiltrators, or sentinels; personally, I would go with infiltrator because they are the most assassin-like class).

Thank. Been out of the loop for a month or so. Appreciate the info.:)

There's better be a codex entry for it. If a Omni tool can project a killable sword, wouldn't this type of technology be banned from the public or little kids playing with 3D swords that can kill

I imagine it's going to be a strictly controlled addition to the Omni-tool's abilities. Probably mil-tech only, but it would also help to explain Kasumi's uber backstab move in better detail \\o/

I like the omni-blade concept. It fits with the established lore and is much better than punching massive aliens. I just hope that the omni-blade leads to a Mass Effect style murder knife.

I think the blade fits the story, but i would prefer a soulja using a futuristic rambo blade.

I loved the Omni Blade. Very stylish. Also, notice how Kasumi's Shadow Strike has her punching the enemy in the back with her Omni Tool activated. She's been using the blade all along. Adepts get to play as Protoss Templars with their psionic blades while Engineers go all Bioshock and just burn you to death.

But I don't want psionic blades of energy...  That sort of concept belongs on Starcraft with zealots.  Why must I deal with that instead of punching enemies into walls with the fury of Jack, and doing that face slam thing Morinth and Samara do?  It doesn't make sense to me.  I couldn't care less about the omni-blade issue regarding its holographic thing.  But the lack of unique biotic melee annoys me.  I'm going to take a large leap and assume that all of the melee blade weaponry share the same animation, a lazy trait from the developers perhaps.  Instead of properly implementing some sort of unique capabilities exclusive for certain classes, ones that actually are entirely fitting.

Personally, I find the ability to punch with biotic energy much more palatable than simply "OH HAI STAB", because it leaves the option open to send your enemies corpses flying into walls.  And that strangely grotesque and satisfying crunch noise when Samara or Morinth palm their enemies in the face while they're grounded.

I remember at the end of ME1, where searching the wreckage omni-tools were used as flashlights.

This reinforced the idea to me that they had much more varied use. In a "soft light" sort of way. The sense that omni-tools could only be used in passive and none physical interaction as it was holographic and created using light. I mean the arms piece is as bright as a torch anyway when you turn it on. I always thought typing away on the holo-dash on the tool and star ships was like typing the air and the tool recognised the break in light as where you typed. However animations never really displayed this so I guess Bioware could say that parts of its features were physical and the technology just developed.

I would at the very least like a codex explaining how they managing to transform holograms and light into a physical form and weapon. Anyway im not against the idea. Light turning from soft to solid has been done in sci-fi many times before. Plus on a game play perspective this is quite interesting. Especially for my Vanguard!

Light is a particle as well as a wave people so theoretically something could be created to manipulate it into a solid for many varied purposes.
I also love how everyone 'hates' the idea of the omni blade, yet no one has played with it yet, and everyone that has played with it has loved it.
I for one look forward to it, and cant wait to see the infiltrator and vanguard attacks

I still love how people are saying this makes no sense, lore-wise, even though the codex and gameplay make it very obvious that the omni-tool can make solid objects.

Why they glow orange, though...

Thanks, I did miss that link.  Just interested now in seeing what else you can do with it.  B)

The reason it's glowing could be because it's either hot as hell, or because of the mass effect field that keeps it together.

And again, Mass Effect started as a good old Sci Fi. A GOOD one. In the 2nd we lost some science for the purpose of gaining newcomers to franchise (more action, no armor and so on). Now we are gonna get this weird "blade of light". It was stated as a GUI for Omni tool in ME1. Why did you guys decide to bring some Assassin's Creed to ME when we, players, actually don't need it?

Speak for yourself.

I'm glad that I have a alternative to the weak elbow.

You'd rather elbow them instead? It's a new (effective) melee weapon/system. How is that bad for the game? Oh that's right. Traditionalists. The bane of every developer. It was a flashlight in ME1. It could shoot fire/ice in 2. Not too far-fetched to think the makers of omni-tools created one for CQB.

Amen to Fluffy and Someone :) I really don't get how anyone can cry about this thing being a negative addition - you don't even have to use it if you don't want to, nevermind they're apparently adding a solid explanation to the codex. There's no room to grumble about it - it doesn't change how you play if you don't want to use it - if you want to use it, hey - more fun!
