I WTF'd at first, but as long as it is adequately explained then I guess it's okay.

My guess? Nanomachine framework.

Isn't the Omni-blade class specific (only for soldiers, where other classes have different CQC weapons)? But in the demo it sounded like every class has the Omini-blane.

Jesus Christ on a ****** people...24 pages of rage over the omni-blade? Really?

You all seriously need to stop harping on improvements to the series. ME needed a good melee attack and now it has one.

Some people exhibit dislike towards the omni-blade. That's fine, I just exhibit disdain towards the idea of the biotic blade. The omni-blade is not my concern.  But I do understand why people don't applaud the excecution or idea of it.

If thermal clips are not canon, then neither are heat sinks.

In other words, nope.avi

I like the omniblade but it gives me strong Assassin's Creed vibes... which is not a bad thing, but I also like icecream and bacon and it doesn't mean I go around dipping my bacon in icecream... if you get what i'm saying...

This is an acceptable alternative as well.

ME had good melee attacks all the time. In ME1, we could strike at opponents with the rifle butt. In ME2, we had the elbow strike. Both are highly effective, efficient and simple moves now and will remain as such in a future setting.

I don't understand why there was a need for that "speshul aktshun mellie" anyway. Get the guns a bayonet and you have a more than decent melee attack at your proposal. Early concepts showed bayonet extensions for weapon customization.

I bet all this stuff started with people preaching for a wicked biotic punch for the Vanguard and how it would be "epic" and "awesome". This is what we got. BioWare does adhere to our wishes, too much in fact. They went completely over their head with it.

Incentive to leave cover.

To be fair bud they could have achieved that by simply making Shileds function according to established Lore.  Melee attacks bypass Shields.  A Rifle butt to the head is gonna smart a bit.  and if a player knows that they can completely ignore an enemies Shield if they melee them, thats incentive enough wouldn't you say?

If the omni-blade is the special attack of the Soldier, then what's this?

The replacement for the elbow attack probably.

I don't think so. You can chill behind cover and shoot people from a distance. Much safer.

Probably the normal melee attack (for the soldier if those are unique too).

edit://
It is still safer to stand behind cover and shoot things. That melee attack does melee only more viable in combat, as would a rifle butt, or a normal melee attack, or a bayonet.

But they wanted an incentive that isn't smack someone in the face eight times.

I think it's a cool addition to the combat system, but a little unnecessary. I don't see why this should've been added.

Safer, certainly, but people who play agressively aren't going for safe.  They're going for fast and eficient and fun.  Knowing that you could bypass a Shield and directly damage an enemies Health (in other words kill them) with melee or you could hang back and shoot off the Shield then start on the Health, which is going to feel more rewarding?

I wasn't aware the new blades were a gesture meant to make me step out of cover. Logically, since I hear so much about how Mass Effect 3 combat is going to be SO much "faster", that enemies will be getting within arms reach more often, therefore appropriate to have some sort of counter for such a situation. Not to make me want to stab every living thing alive in order to keep from staying in cover long.

I think you're all missing the point of this new one hit kill melee:

You're no longer forced to sit through minutes of chipping down shields... then armor... then health... rinse and repeat.

Though I imagine running up to things and shanking them might also become mind numbing after a while, at least its less time consuming.

I like to think that the blade is upgradeable too, so it might gain special traits later on that might be useful.

Despite odd decisions the developers make in the eyes of some, I highly (and hopefully this will be the case ) doubt they will make the one-hit-kill a continuous ability in order to preserve some sort of balance.  Or it might just function only when health is left on an unprotected enemy like somebody mentioned earlier.  I'm sure destroying armor and shields will be back for more.
