Looks cool to me. I don't see the issue lore-wise; you get tech shields and combat drones which both have some kind of physical resistance to them.

While the Tech Armor and Combat Drones are similar to the Omni-Blade, they are not at the heart of the lore argument. They don't excuse the ridiculousness of the Omni-Blade.

What is the rediculousness of it, elaborate.

No more ridiculous than the hard edged, solid shields spammed by the Geth in ME1. Or is that game too precious to criticise?

My omni-tool could launch spheres that coud incinerate people. Don't see why it can't form a blade. :)

There is a need to introduce a new class called the Brawler.
He doesn't use any weapons but uses dual omniblades instead.

That's.. that's... not a terrible idea actually.

I honestly think we'll see that at one point, especially if you're a Soldier... since Soldiers apparently have two omni-blades, one on each hand.

Of course there needs to be a biotic version too.

Let's call them the Inforcers
They use dual omniblades and can use
Push, Pull and Slam.

P.S. And Reave if you're Renegade :D

I first thought adding melee-weapons to ME would be the worst thing you could do to the series, but I've got to say it looks quite solid.
Although I have to criticize one thing: Why does a holo-blade have a flip-out animation???
It looks almost perfect with being projected segment for segment, until one part flips out.
It's a detail, yes, but it just makes absolutely no sense for me.

Are these things soldier-exclusive?

Edit: Meh, seems like it. Was asking because I was wondering which non-biotic class to main for my new canon Shep.

I just can't wait to use a GLOWING blade to sneak up on someone. Knives? Fine but why does everything have to glow, announcing that Shepard is coming up from behind. Great idea.

I never used melee in ME1 or ME2, unless the enemy got too close and it switched to it automatically.

They are REALLY pushing it now it seems. They guy in one interview even mentions that if you use your melee weapon to take out the man-tank-thing you can then use it yourself.

It's so stupid to think that someone with a high powered assault rifle is going to want to run up to a bunch of guys that are shooting him with guns and try to take them out with melee. Stupid, stupid, stupid.  Even dumber I'm going to run up to this man-tank-thing and melee it.  You got to be kidding me.

And the fact that they are more less forcing it on you by only letting you have certain things if you fight with melee is just WRONG. I didn't think BW would be so eager to screw up another game after DA2, but it looks like they are trying.

QFE

Sci-fi or no, anything that is an order of magnatude more plausible, while still maintaining the "cool factor," is a win.

Don't get in melee fights then? You can play it perfectly fine the old fashioned way with guns. I'm guessing Skyrims is ruined too since you can dual wield weapons?

Yeah, its more realistic that you can hide a giant ass blade in your forearm armor and have it pop out like a swiss army knife.

Yes but in an interfview they mentioned that there are certain things or items you can only get if you defeat something using melee.  They are forcing it on us, which I really don't like in a shooter game.

Skyrim dual wielding is going to rock.  In fact Skyrim will probibally be the reason I'll be able to hold off getting ME3 until the Ultimate Edition comes out a couple years from now.

Whiolst you are at it making uneducated opinion bashing, why not stereotype further? Please, we have been lacking internet racism so far, why don't you start it right away.

Didn't like my response? Well, don't post like that in topics like this.

Or the other most quoted BS in here: "Deal with it!".

Unless you are forced into melee when/if the enemies flank you or ambush you. Then it's very good to have something to counter their melee attacks with.

Forcing melee on you?  What, I supose they are also "forcing" you to have fun, no?

Mass Effect isn't really a 'shooter game.'  Sure, shooting things is pretty much the main way you interact with it... but I doubt you got interested in Mass Effect becuase of the guns.  I bet it was all of that other stuff (the lore, the characters, etc) that got you hooked.

And guess what?  All that other stuff?  Still going to be in the game.  We also just have a glowy blade for soldiers now.  Hate the glowy blade?  Maybe wait till we learn what the other melee is like.  Maybe you will like the other options better.  There are like six other classes.  I'm sure you will find one that interests you.

But nobody is forcing you to use the soldier class or even soldier melee.

Ignoring the omni-blade for a moment -

I would like to see in the combo of chained basic melee attacks, shep perform a roundhouse kick.

omni-blade is kind nice but i'm wondering is it exclusive to soldiers or do all classes have access to it?

According to Jesse (I think it was, seen so many interviews and trailers I can't remember), the Omni-Blade is the Soldier weapon, other classes have something different, but in affect it does the same thing. There was no elobaration, other than it would most definitely look different.

Casey Hudson said in the Fan Q&A that the omniblade was for all classes, and that other classes would also get unique melee weapons of their own.
