The Omni-blade discussion thread. - Edited OP

Omnitools are not entirely holograms. They have to have physical components, and it even says so in the codex.
"computer microframe, sensor analysis pack, and minifacturing fabricator."
Just this single sentence should tell you that the omni-blade is completely possible. The omniblade manufactures the blade out of provided material, and then once done probably disassembles it. In fact I think Casey Hudson confirmed it as such.
The omnitool itself is NOT holographic, only the GUI is. The Omniblade is NOT holographic, it is manufactured by the physical components of the tool. Casey told us what it was made of somewhere... (I think it was twitter) but I digress. There is nothing holographic about the blade.

Is that a thing every class has now?
I hope not, but I think it is.
Only the engineer should have an omni-blade.

I don't follow your logic.

And what's neat to think about is that the blade edge could be as thin as a line of atoms, and likely one of, if not thee sharpest edge in the galaxy.
I'd just rather restrict it to the Sentinel to replace that Power Fist thing I've seen.

I remember reading that it's different for certain classes. Biotics have some kind of biotic blade, for instnace.

Yes, as far as i know, each class has their own charged melee. tapping the mele button will make combos, which might also be unique to each class.

My question is this: why does it make that metallic sound?

I like the omni-blade. ME melee needed improvement.

Two possible explanations, each valid. Take your pick:
a.) Made up science: the sound we hear results from the omni-tool's formation and creation of the blade (which, as others have said, is solid; when formed, we'd hear the particles coming together and fusing)
b.) Good gameplay: it sounds neat and badass.

I'll pick both. I love made up stuff and good gameplay.
I like the omni-blade even more now.

c) Legislators passed a law requiring the omni-tool to make that sound for safety reasons, akin to the way we now have to have an artificial shutter sound for cell phone cameras.
Won't someone please think of the children?

For Example the Inflitrator.
In Mass Effect 2 I was sniping, sniping and sniping and... oops, i'm out of ammo.
*Sneak and looking for ammo to pick up*
Or I used the machine gun.
But now, i can snipe AND (hopefully) sneak over the battlefield and kill the enemies in close combat. That is, what i am expecting of an Infiltrator: getting behind enemies and sniping. The assassin class of Mass Effect should have the possibility to assassin at short range, too.
(If there is no sneak/hide talent in Mass Effect 3, then I just switch to Assault Rifle, roll from wall to wall while firing at enemies. If I am close to one I use the blade, you CAN integrate it in your Combat style, and it could be very effective.
By the way, i think the omni-blades look pretty cool. In my oppinion it fits to Mass Effect, you can kill people with tech. In Mass Effect 2 you can often can see Shepard tiping on a tastature on the omni-tool. So there must be something physical. So why not invent something that can kill enemies and can be "stored" in the tool?
P.S. In case, that my English is not that good... that's because i'm German and I'm learning English since 5 years only

Yeah, I think one of the tech codex entries said all the keyboard/omnitool interfaces have tactile feedback and "feel solid," peoples' fingers aren't slipping through stuff when they're inputting something.
The lore checks out well enough to me (if it's a bit more flashy than usual, which isn't necessarily a bad thing), I can't wait to see what happens with it.

Though I kind of wish the animation of it wasn't a mini cutscene (unless you become bulletproof during those cutscenes). Sure it looks cool, but if I have to see the same thing over and over again... Maybe that will change when I actually try my hands on it on March. ^^

i agree. i was wondering how soon it would be before i started avoiding melee because of that. ive also seen some quick melee jabs too so that might satisfy me.
itll be weird getting over the fact that punches seems to be my most effective maneuver. yay for infiltrators and vanguards, i suppose.

Do I expect melee spamming? Sure. I don't expect it to work, and since it's a single player game I don't see it changing my play style much as a soldier other than giving me a potential stealth option or a viable weapon for when I either don't have my shotgun loaded or equipped.
Regular melees haven't felt right to this point. I'm hoping this lets it flow better once I get used to the new control and figure out how I want to implement it into my style.

well, it looks awesome. but in reality, you can't just kill somebody with holo graphic-ish look weapon even in 26th century. it's not right. I thought that bioware might bring some real look serious deadly melee weapon. but hey, we have still 8 months to get ME 3. who knows? something will be changed before releasing.
Yeah the look is the only major problem I have with it. That and it keeps getting described as a "holographic switchblade" which is not going to help people take it seriously either.

But see, that assumption is incorrect. It's already been stated that while the omni-tool mostly projects holographic feedback, it can and in the case of the omni-blade, will create a PHYSICAL weapon which will certainly kill people you hit. While they haven't gone in depth on the lore for it yet, given that the weapon could easily be a temporarily generated mass effect field, kinectic projection or simply the omni-tool using some of it's own hardware components to form a blade - it's certainly NOT a hologram
