There is a hard cap with the size of game saves. That leads to issues if you sell to much to any one vendor. It's irritating, but it is a known bug and there is only so much they can do about it. If they have the vendors dump inventory, they will have people screaming about the things they sold disappearing. It's kind of a no-win for the devs. The only real solution is to have the vendors refuse to buy anything when they reach the cap, but that may be an awful lot of programming.
First, there are any number of technical fixes available here-- vendors could simply dump low-value common items, vendors could be allocated additional space in the save file, etc.
Second, I don't see how that would be an "awful lot of programming". Software has to manage memory all the time-- add a simple check to see if the vendor exceeds a limit, and if they do pop up a message that the vendor has no room in their store. It's not significantly more complicated than the checks to see if you can afford an item.
All of that pales in comparison to the most obvious step for a professional company-- this thread is months old and has zero responses from their staff. Bioware has a responsibility to their customers to address the problem.
This is not one of those subjective game balance issues about what is or isn't "broken"-- for example, the recent thread about whether or not you could be able to freeze/shatter certain NPCs. This is a simple objective case where a flaw in the software renders the customers' games unrecoverable, in a genre with highly cumulative gameplay where saved games represent tens of hours of their time.

This is an absolutely brilliant post, and sums up the issue perfectly, including the fixes needed. I bet everyone here would have been fine with, "Sorry, I've got no more room." over hours of lost time. The developers owe it to us to at least REPLY.

I had this problem. I had to play all the way through the landsmeet then exit Denerim ( I chose to go to Camp) to finally get the game to save. Maybe you could try that?

I just bought the game, 4 day ago, and it's sad to know that i'll have the same problem, sooner or later, a shame that a company like bioware doesn't care about this problem.
There are a few workarounds for the overloading merchants, one way is to find out how much the stuff you're selling is worth, then use the item dupe glitch to get that amount of money and just destroy the items. Or just make sure you spread out the merchants you sell to. Also be careful how much stuff you store in the chest you get at Wardens Keep, pretty sure this can be overloaded as well. That being said, I'm sure you'll run into a number of other glitches/bugs that are present in the game.

If you have used the endless crystal glitch in Redcliffe, it will at some point corrupt your savegames.
he's right, this happened to me twice after I used the redcliff infinite money glitch, it just corrupted my good file and I already pre-orderd Awakening, now I got to speed run through the Origins just to play Awakening.

If you're going to cheat for money use the item dupe not the crystals, it won't ruin your game and is so much easier and faster.

And YES i'm amazed of Bioware lack of response on this issue. I downloaded Awakening form Xbox live, i just hope this bug will not be carried over there.

Yes the expansion has all the bugs Origins has, corrupt saves, King ending screwed up, pretty much every know bug in origins cares over to awaking do to them using the same game engine. 10 hrs into the expansion and now I'm getting corrupted saves.
Guess Bioware's not getting my money then.

You know you can do the glitch when Bella becomes the head of the tavern in redcliff right, like the boss has them but their worth money, if you make Bella the boss then she has them for free and that activates the glitch and corruptes your file right/
