This issue is almost always the money glitch in redcliff. I have done personal testing after it happened to me. Where the issue spawns from is the vendors always keep what you sell to them on them. You can sell anything to any vendor anywhere in the game and come back and get it later. The game does not ever remove what you sell from a vendor. I think someone wasn't testing very well.
I mean I can see them keeping named loot on a vendor but all the junk loot stays too. So what essentially happens is the amount of memory they have dedicated to vendor inventory gets overloaded and corrupts.
Test it yourself if you like. Please be sure to save prior to selling every time and then load the game after every sale. Eventually corruption happens. I was also hoarding in the chest at soldiers keep in DLC., I have stopped that too as it will corrupt. I would also not suggest always selling to the same vendor either.

Nice but hard to say if that is the only cause for the issue.

The tumblers click into place and the lock opens....
80+ hrs into the game I had the same problem, though I never knew aabout or did any money glitch', but the overloading merchant theory seems to be the correct one as I had just come back from a quest and unloaded a few items in my camp merchants inventory. The next time I went to load corrupted city. Does anyone know if Bioware is aware of this and working on some sort of patch? Considering the extensive info they keep on our characters they should worst come to worst be able to rebuild them. I'm going to shoot off an e-mail with t his epiphany to technical support and see where it gets me I urge others to do the same, I for one do not intend to let this slide. Power to the people..=)

After about another 40+ hrs on my new "test" character, I too would have to say that the "damaged" saves problem seems to be pointing to merchant overload.... however, I don't sell to the same merchants all the time, I had spread the invenory selling to at least a couple different merchants per dump. Thus far, (even with the crystal glitch) my saves are working fine. Problem is, though, eventually -- even without using the crystal glitch -- you could still get the "damaged saves" just by selling your loot to certain merchants..Which may be why some who never used the crystal glitch, are reporting this problem as well. I have noticed that it seems like not every merchant is keeping all my loot sold to them.. strange, as only some, and by some, I mean the main, most accessible merchants in each area appear to be hording most, if not all of my sold items. One of these being the dwarve in Denerim's market, which just happens to be just after my last save on my original main pc with 90+ hrs on it... as I had just finished up a quest in Denerim's Landsmeet questline and sold my loot to him, when I had saved for the night... the next morning, "Damaged or Missing save files" for all saves on that char. (each save file had, at some point, a loot dump on it)
I think that this error is caused somehow by the "Shale" download, as the crystals are attached to this download --- and many of the merchants that seem to be hording sold items, are merchants who's inventory includes Shale's crystals for sale.
Is anyone having the "damaged" saves problem that did not download Shale ?

i would have to concur with you boomnslice considering the only way to get the glitch to work is to have the shale download i like how it was a free download from the oh customer satisfying bioware to not look very far into their own dlc

I read something on another forum about how uninstalling and reinstalling the dlc may fix the issue. I haven't tried it myself as I'm not sure what would happen if I did that since all my current toons have done the dlc and I'm not sure if it would mess it up. Has anyone else given it a try or willing to try it?

This corrupted data stuff just happened to me the other night. I died in a side quest boss fight and when I tried to load my last save, both the manual and the auto-save were corrupted. And I'd never even heard of any of the money/crystal glitches before. My guess is that it's connected with the DLC. Not an hour before my data was corrupted, I downloaded the Warden's Peak DLC. Gah. I flipped out. 70 hours of my life that I can never get back...and I was at the Landsmeet, too. D: I really like Bioware, but they need to get this stuff sorted out, like, yesterday.

Hello all,
My time played is at 75+ and I just recently had a corrupted save game. I usually stay clear from any cheats my first play through. So, no I did not do the crystal glitch and still got a corrupted save game just before the Landsmeet in Denerim. Luckily for me I had 10 save slots (four of which got corrupted) and have come to the conclusion like many of you that it happens to be associated with selling too much to one merchant, Bodahn Feddic in my case. I've avoided going back to Redcliffe just in case. I've overwritten those 4 corrupted save games and been able to reload without a hitch. I hope this helps.

BioWare won't answer any support questions on this site, it's a social site for fans apparently. We have two options, help ourselves (which is impossible) or contact EA for support help. Well I sent in a support question asking for help about this issue 10 days ago and wanted to share with you all what I got in response.
NOTHING
That's right, nothing. Over 10 days of waiting, for a response that is only supposed to take 24 hours, and they can't even give the common courtesy to even acknowledge that I have a problem. So I suggest that more people send in support questions/complaints/grievances to EA until they acknowledge that there is a problem. Hell, I would settle for "we are aware of the problem and are trying to fix it", that would be better than ignored. I definitely feel like I wasted my money on this game and the DLC that I purchased.
Another suggestion. I am going to be emailing some gaming magazines about this issue and a few others, but more specifically about EA's lack of support. Do the same. We may not have a lot of say in EA's eyes, but some of the gaming magazines do and they can talk to people within the industry that may be able to give us some answers. Tallk loud enough and we'll be heard.

I have 60+ hrs logged on my "test" character, now... I've done the crystal exploit 5 times, each with its own save just after the exploit was used -- obtaining no more than roughly 40 crystals max.... and yes, the saves where done in Redcliff.
What I have been doing, though, this time through.. is only selling portions of the amount of crystals obtained with the exploit to different merchants -- no more than about 20-30 per merchant each time -- I find that Orzimmar is a pretty good place to sell them to as there are many merchants to sell to in a relatively close area. Also, I've noticed that at least a few of these merchants (in Orzimmar) do not hold on to the items sold to them in the "Buy Back" category or even their "Junk" category for too long, which is probably why I haven't received any "Damaged" saves as of yet. I'll continue to use my "test" character and report when/if I do get the "damaged" saves and what the circumstances where when/if it happens.

Cheating results to this or turning console off while loading/saving not saying you cheating but in case you had.

Argh. Just died on the final quest and my auto-save says it's corrupt! All of the saves during the final quest are also corrupt. I have a save prior to Landsmeet and all of the sidequests I finished up before the endgame that works, but still this is frustrating. I think I'm just going to load up on health pots tomorrow and try to blitz through. Want to beat the game before all of my saves go corrupt.

I concur with Foxfire0105. My problems with the game are exactly as all "fans" have stated (well, we're hardly fans anymore). We might never get back our saved-games and the issue might never get resolved as long as EA refuses to acknowledge our problems. This is the worst customer service and troubleshooting efforts made in any game I have ever played.
We need a concerted effort in this. I urge everyone to write complaints to the game magazines, blogs and websites and let them know the seriousness of EA's customer support. If the source company refuses to acknowledge customer queries and complaints, then our best chance at some form of retaliation is through the media.

First off, XOGHunter246, this happens to many who do not use any "cheat"/glitch/exploit, etc..
and do not turn off their systems during a save. I mean no offense, but, had you even read through these posts before posting? If so, you would have known that it has been happening to others who do not "cheat". On a side note: I am "cheating" (using the crystal exploit) currently to try and rule it out/incorporate it in my research to try to figure out what the real problem is.
Now, back to my last post... I've now encountered the wonderful "Damaged" save...and guess what? All my saves (6 of them, now -- using my method of research as stated in my last post) with the "crystal glitch/exploit" used..STILL WORK !!??. The damaged save happened after finishing up the "Jarvia" questline...upon completion I sold all of my inventory that had been aquired during the quest... NO exploit items (crystals) were sold to the shopkeep who's shop you end up in at the end of the quest.
Luckily, I can use my save (w/ the crystal exploit used) from just before starting that quest to continue.. and I'll continue to report any new data .. as well as continue to periodically use the "crystal glitch" to try and rule it out further.
So far, it appears to be a shopkeep gltich and NOT use of the "crystal glitch" that is causing this problem... as all my "cystal" saves are still working.
Once again, I ask.... Has the "Damaged" save error happened to anyone who has not downloaded any DLC?

Still, no matter what the actual problem is... will we even come to this conclusion without having access to the original files/coding that BioWare / Edge of Reality has?? The fact that we are getting the run-around, if we get any response at all, from BioWare/EA is very disheartening.... and with each hour that goes by my hopes/wanting of ME2 dwindles a touch. (and I loved Mass Effect !!..not the promised dlc ..or lack there of, but...that's another story) I mean, c'mon, BioWare..you'd be stupid if you would think that we would not associate this poor quality/support with YOU, the maker of the game... no matter who you had port the game to the 360 and no matter who you sold-out to (EA). I'm not a huge EA basher (for ever good thing they seem bring to the table, there's another 3 things that detract), but... when you make a deal with the devil, prepare to get burned!
But, anyway, I'm vigilant in my researching..one potential problem at a time.

Has anyone received anyword from Bioware about this? If you look through all the xbox 360 strings you will see the bugs are legion. I'm willing to give them until this Friday and then I say we make a huge smear campaign against them. I'm willing to do this alone but the more of us that band together the stronger we'll be. I concur with Ellysius this cannot be allowed stand. They will hear us one way or another..

OMG! I just received my game in the mail today, and registered it. I sure hope this does not happen to me. I haven't even started up the game on my console yet, and I am already disheartened. I was being a good little soldier by checking out the forum first for any gotcha's, and whammo, it looks like you all have found it! Oh brother! I've read all the replies in this thread, and gathered that most, if not all of you are really bummed to say the least! But imagine the disappointment for someone getting ready to start the game for the first time today. I am beginning to feel sick already, and I have not even played yet!
So, It seems I have to not use a crystal exploit and/or download the downloadable content, not sell too much to certain vendors, not store the game on the hard drive, not keep too much loot in some chest, gee whiz. It's already a mind numbing thought, and I have not even started playing yet!
EA / BioWare, take this as a hint, get the bug(s) fixed right away. With all the apparent "nots" I listed above, people will "not" want to purchase this game soon. Word of mouth will start killing future sales for sure, and EA might "not" be profitable with this game in the future! If I had read this forum before purchasing this game, I would have waited until a fix was acknowledged and created before doing so!
Not happy.

Just save often and keep like 10 revolving saves. I'm definitely glad I had a ton of saves. The game itself is still fantastic. As long EA/BioWare show some kind of commitment to fixing this game-ruining bug, I can live with the rest of the small gripes. I would still recommend playing the game, as it truly is a fantastic game with a terrific story.
I think that's why these glitches can be so frustrating. Because outside of them, BioWare has truly made a gem of a game.

I would rather a fix to this now that the issue is Found. Sad that it took the community not the Devs to find this out but at least they can figure out a fix. If not i will be extremely Dissapointed.

BW and EA just dont care. They will more than likely put the patch we all want in DLC and make us pay more for problems that are their fault to begin with.

I also experienced the save game corruption problem in Redcliff after exploiting the crystal glitch, and yes, I have the Shale DLC installed.
Luckily, I had many save games before it occurred (roughly twenty).
In my particular case, as long as I didn't enter either vendor store in Redcliff, I could continue to return to the rest of the town without any further problems to my game saves.
A few suggestions to those who have just begun playing:
- Do NOT exploit the crystal glitch. It will exacerbate the corruption problem (not the only cause, but certainly doesn't help matters).
- Destroy common items such as low level shields, weapons, armor, etc., instead of selling them to vendors.
- If you are in need of money (since you'll be destroying many of the common items you would normally sell), exploit the sell/buy back/sell vendor cheat instead. This does not appear to corrupt the saves, since items are not being repeatedly created and thus overloading the merchants.
When I followed these simple rules, I no longer experienced any corrupt saves, and thankfully made it through the rest of the game unscathed.
Good luck!
