I began using tactics now that I have a pile of abilities and sustains to manage. I included in the tactics for all companions "Target of Hawke-attack", but I noticed they still spend an awful lot of time standing around doing absolutely nothing. I had this issue in the DAOs and I eventually had to delete 90% of the tactics because it seemed that with all of these tactics, the game just spends too much time thinking about what it should do next. Almost all of my tactics were copied from guides too, so I am quite sure they are written correctly. In fact, there are times where everything goes off perfectly, then suddenly for the next goup of enemies, they stand around after they JUST nailed everything prefectly.

Any ideas what causes this? Is there something that is a common factor in this happening?

I dunno... sometimes I notice the same thing where they're just standing there, despite what the tactics should be driving them to do.

Make sure their behavior is set to something like "Aggressive" instead of "Defensive" or "Passive".

I have their settings on Ranged, but, I noticed that they like to just run everywhere, so I typically group them up and put them on hold so I can keep an eye on them. I am running a Bersker Vanguard, so without threat talents other than Goad, keeping them together has been by far the easiest way to keep hate off of them.

I will switch their settings and play around with those and see what happens. Never though to do that. thanks.

Awesome, now my game is repeatedly locking up at the loading screen so I can't test this out.

Maybe you forgot to turn off hold. Happens to me. Keeping hold on during combat can hamper your party, even for ranged units like if target is out of range obviously they won't attack or if they are around a corner out of vision. I always turn hold off during fights. Put aggressive if you don't want them to run around, they jus keep attacking and stay on the same position even when getting pummeled (including mages/ranged). But when you put ranged, ranged units or mages will hit and run from melee enemies. I modified the tactics a bit too, I noticed if at least one characters under your selection attacks or uses an ability it triggers tactics for the rest I think but I didn't really bother cuz I usually beat mobs easily. Same with DAO, I usually select all members then focus fire on one unit to guarantee they'll do something at least then cast spells or what as necessary on whatever. I mainly got this habit from playing RTS games "attack move" concept.

My guess why tactics don't work at times is probably they don't have vision of enemy due to some wall or position. Hold further worstens this. If at least one character has vision then it should be fine for the rest to react. Although I don't always rely on tactics cuz AI is never perfect, I micro each character as necessary only when needed and note I play on hard/nightmare. Although usually I just control one character while the rest pound away, sometimes I manually cast AoE's on clustered groups, then lastly take care of any dying characters or those that are out of position, that's it.
