Ashley is and should be plaine Jane, please dont "Bioware" her up.
That means no makeup and no fancy hairstyle.
For the love of Ashley, we the community must make this clear to the Devs before the game is shipping.

Really?  Did you play ME1?

So are we talking about Shepard and his/her circumstances, or Ashley and hers? Do most Spectres have a full ship and crew behind them where they have a limited time to save the galaxy from another rogue spectre?

Ashley wasn’t a Spectre in Mass Effect one, she was a supporting crew member. She wasn’t a Spectre or a squad member in Mass Effect 2 and we’re not sure as of yet as to when she rejoined Shepard’s crew in Mass Effect 3, or when or why she became a Spectre. Maybe she was out fighting with a crew of her own trying to stop some mass enemy sometime after Arrival. I don’t know. I didn’t gather Shepard’s case was the norm for a Spectre--out of all of them.

Apparently "Ashley is very different now." Said on twitter by some BioWare guy/girl.

I'm pretty sure it's said you get the Normandy because Spectre's are supposed to have their own ship.

If Spectres weren't expected to get into heavy combat frequently, then they wouldn't be picking people like Ashley and Shepard. You don't recruit great soldiers like that and then try to turn them into James Bond.

edit: Plus all the other spectres we've seen have worn pretty heavy armour
further edit: Except for light armoured Shepard in ME1, I guess

An amalgamation of the two is pretty much what she is and a functional amalgamation of the two outfits should be all that someone with Ashley's apparent personality traits needs, but that is clearly not the case. Face it, the women in this game were always intended to look like.....women. BioWare's art team simply got better.

Heh. And this is the type 1 Hazmat suit:

Would anyone like to spend their game looking like that too?

I am, for one, glad Bioware isn't designing a futuristic sci-fi game with present day  "functional and practical" as their artistic direction.

I want you to point out to me which one goes into combat. Then tell me which one goes for long walks into vacume to repair essential equipment.

Then I want you to look me straight in the eye and tell me Ashley is equpped to do either.

*Stares you straight in the eye*

It's fully plausible for Ashley to be dressed as she is and do either job.

Ever read John Scalzi's "Old Man's War" and "The Ghost Brigade"? Good Military Sci-fi if you get the chance. The Human Soldiers in that series use Combat armor that is forged from interlinked nanobots, it proected the wears far better than anything we have today and was much lighter and far less bulky. In fact I think it was described as being a fairly tight jumpsuit in look.

So now we have Ash in a Jumpsuit that has armor over it (chest, hips, shoulders etc) covers her body and can be sealed at the neck. Add a helment and she' good for a space walk, and if that armor is formed via some neew technique that makes it lighter and still provides the protection of heavy armor without the restriction on movement, she's golden.

Nah, Saren and Nihlus hitch-hiked frequently.

In all honesty, this topic has been exhausted. They're not gonna change this outfit if it's her main. There is going to be an alternate appearance for the N7 Edition. She looks good. Fine enough for me.

Because I love you all I'm going to post a picture of Power armor that protects its user, can or has been shown to be sealable and is much lighter looking than the Bulky armor Ash once wore.

Let's get started.

Wait wait wait-

I know why Ashley has changed her dress!

Ashley is indoctrinated. The Reapers wanted to control someone close to Shepard in order to a means of controlling Shepard. So Ash gets indoctrinated, gets implants, and begins to wear skimpier clothing in order to keep manShep/lezShep's attention so that she provides another angle for the reapers.

Inconsistency fixed. :D

I finally figured out where Bioware’s artist got the inspiration for Ash’s new suit, the Metal Gear Solid series. Some people have already commented that the weapon customization is from MGS 4 so it stands to reason that they borrowed a few other things, like the various ‘sneak suits’ that improve strength and provide protection.

Proof? Sure...

So if Ashley and Leng get into a fist fight on the back of a Reaper (Leng: "Come on Ash!"), try to act surprised.

Metal Gear Solid 4, It's Tengu power armor It allows the user to cling to walls and ceilings, leap 2-3 meters straight up and protects them from small arms fire.

edit:

Oh yeah...also from MGS

Huh. I've only noticed her right foot before this. Looking at the left, though. She's wearing wedged boots/shoes/footwear. Her right heel is elevated!

Rechecking, it does not make physical sense.

Nevermind, yes it does.

Liara's battle labcoat look does a good job of looking both protective and characterful. And really, since she's a biotic and not a soldier they'd have had a pretty good excuse if they'd wanted to put her in some sort of spy catsuit.

I think all points on the various sides of the argument have been covered, so all that's left is.. this

For what it's worth, I'm still a little disappointed with her redesign. 56 pages and I remain unconvinced that the decision to redesign her look was born from a need to reflect a natural progression of the character. It instead looks to me that Ashley's old look was deemed too 'plain' to fit in with the syle established with the ME2 squaddies, be that style a result of rule of cool or sexualisation. I think that's a shame.

We'll only know undeniably once we play the game and can form informed opinions.

Because that's as far as our knowledge will go. Opinions, and nothing more. Unless the devs want to tell us, which they may not.

I just hope they don't bastardize Ashley from what she originally was when Chris L'Etoile wrote her.

I'm going to figure you mean the links to MGS. All right look at Snake's sneak suit, notice that it has a portion of it that kind of looks like a jacket or flak vest? that's similar to the front portion of Ashley's new suit. Raiden (the blonde) has chest armor and shoulder pieces that match up nicely to Ash's new look as well. Both MGS suits are sealable, provide some protection against bullets and increase their users strength. So if Ash has learned to be more subtle her new suit would fit in with that mentality. Sure you can kick in doors with heavy armor and repaint the wall in spinal fluid, but sometimes it's best to be in and out without he enemy ever even knowing you were there. Ash may have learned this and thus commissioned a suit that would allow her to do both, hence what we have now.

More MGS suits.

I think everyone can agree on that :) Personaly I'd be particularly interested in better pictures of her shoes, and it would help to see femshep/other female character models so we can see whether or not Ash' uhm... boob upgrade is something specific to her character model (like with Miranda) or a change across the board. And no, I'm not sure which one of those 2 options I'd feel better about yet :bandit:
