It is if you look closely at these screenshots you can see she is wearing  what appears to be the equivalent of a space kevlar vest.

Actually since Ash is a spectre it's probably space dragon skin.

The images you linked and the image in Bluko's post show that it's the same exact suit.  Considering that, look at the image Bluko posted.  If there's some form of kevlar there it's only down I'd say 3/4 of her torso from sternum outward.  Where's the rest of the protection needed?  The fat in her breasts won't stop a slug and there's still the matter of that open V sliver (I guess you can call it).  There's no protection there.

Yes because character models never change over time when a game is being developed. /endsarcasm

Case and point.

Now looking at the latest model from e3 we can see that there is plating/kevlar/dragonskin on her chest area.

And if you're unhappy with that i think the CE comes with a free alternate appearance pack.

Yes, but this is her armor. Someone just told me about a tweet they read that pretty much confirms this. So arguing the merits for or against is pretty much a moot point now. I like her armor. You don’t. A lot of people like her armor. A lot of people don’t.
It's not moot until it goes gold.  I have no intention of stopping til that happens or Bioware releases more information that can actually makethis palatable for me.  And I hope Bioware realises that this outfit is not being received with universal acclaim...

Hopefully she’ll be the same Ashley that we love. I know that I won’t let such a minor detail give me any annoyance as long as she remains the same character and I hope no one else will either. Sometimes people focus so much on the forest, they miss the trees.
But...I am focusing on a tree.  An Ash tree.  Someone stripped the bark from it...
Sorry if you disagree, and I hope you can still enjoy the game for what it is. I am really happy that she is keeping this armor, but sorry you'll be upset about it, Iakus. :-/
To tell the truth, it will hurt.  A lot.  A lot of squadmates in ME 2 never saw the light of day save for their loyalty missions because I found I could not take them seriously due to their outfits.  And those actually matched their personalities.  This outfit doesn't even do that.  I may still get the game, but I will probably hold off on purchasing it. for a few months.   I was on the fence anyway, but this could be the dealbreaker.

EDIT:

Here is the tweet:

"I love Ashley's new look in ME3, gonna be upset if all of the ****ers and complainers persuade Bioware to change her look"

"We don't compromise artistic vision"
Wow.

Just.

Wow.

I found the original tweet incredibly rude, and her response totally dismissive of fan concerns.

I must be an uncouth barbarian for daring to question their "artistic vision"
My concerns about character consistency and lore adherence must mean I'm a book-burner.
Oh, the shame!  I'm just the game-player eagerly awaiting Ash's return since the Horizon scene in ME 2.  To think I had the audacity to have an opinion!  And tried to articulate it!
I must eat puppies too.

Well here's my response to anyone "in the know":  Prove me wrong.

That's right.  I've been wrong before.  I was apprehensive about the omniblade and its place in ME lore.  One tweet from Patrick Weekes set me on the path to accepting it.  Tell me why it makes sense for her to go from medium-heavy armor to Spectre-Lite gear.  Especially with Kaidan in the heavy stuff?  Convince me the character hasn't been changed to fit some new "vision".  What am I missing?  What is this "artistic vision?" Is it part of her arc?  Will she pull an "Aveline"?  WIll the change be noted in-game?  Don't blow off my concerns without telling me why it's wrong.

So what is it?  What's the Mass Effect reason?  Or is it really a Mass Appeal reason?

Yes that tweet hit a berserk button on me.  If this crosses a line, I apologize.  But I try to be reasonable and explain why I believe what I do about the game and it characters  This cavalier attitude just...disturbs me.

I believe they're absolutely in the right. They are creators with a clear goal in mind, with a clear idea of what to do with the stories and the characters, including how they behave, why they behave that way, and that includes how they're presented.

Remember when ME2 came out and people were upset with how "brutal" Liara was? She was cold. Distant. Unhelpful. It upset a lot of people (and probably drove a few prior Liara-lovers to jump into the arms of another LI instead)...

... BUT, then Lair of the Shadow Broker came out and everything fell into place, including a very reasonable explanation for Liara's behavior and actions.

You don't honestly think they would dramatically change the way Ashley looks without a good reason, right? She's always been seen as this bossy, professional, militaristic butch-girl type... so why would she drop that and make herself prettier? Well, there could be a variety of reasons... but that's just it... there ARE reasons beyond "titilation".

Yahtzee from Zero Puntuation said it best, "fans are whining, clinging, complaining [jerks] that will never be satisfied with any concessions you make". I don't want to be pandered to. If I want Ashley to be the same forever, I'll just play ME1 instead over and over. Good characters DO go through changes. Garrus is HARDLY the same man he was in ME1 that he became in ME2, Liara went through a great deal and changed accordingly, and I'm sure more than a few people were shocked at how... cute... Tali could be.

But they've even stated they gave Jack an extensive make-over... and said they were going to explain why. Would Ashley not be the same? She's gone through some changes, lost a lot, gained a lot, and it's silly to think that Ashley's appearance, both by your side and her extensive make-over, won't be addressed head-on.

I have faith in Bioware's "artistic vision" over the rambling demands of certain fans. I remember when people complained about Miranda's look (she looks like Michael Jackson), Jack's look (no shirt? Lame), Samara's look (boobs ahoy), Thane's look (hello, Abe Sapien), Grunt's look (he doesn't look like Wrex), Jacob's look (Kayne West?), Tali's look (or lack of a face...)... eh, nobody will be 100% happy, but when the game came out, their "look" became secondary to their personalities and story... which were all fantastic.

I don't know what your point is here either.  Two pictures of Miranda that are so similar as to be exactly the same.  What are you trying to show me?

I haven't seen the latest model.  I didn't know there was something different.  Please provide a link so I can see it.  Of course I'll try and locate it myself in the mean time.

If it's anything like what we've already seen I will be unhappy with it twice over because I have to pay for a collector's edition or buy dlc to fix an issue that shouldn't have been made broken to begin with.

I have faith.

I remember it well.  There was also an in-game explanation for her attitude, albiet it's hard to find and easy to get locked out of.

I remember Lair of the Shadow Broker, how it "coincidentally", dealt with complaints about ME2 that had been floating around for months on the boards, making it probably Bioware's most popular DLC ever.

I also remember how LOTSB, Liara's "redemption" came with a $10 price tag...

I'm not saying Ash shouldn't change. But this makeover is a huge departure.  I and others expressed concern, suggesting a heavier armor was more appropriate.  Apparantly we're suggesting we graffiti the Louvre or something.

RE:  Jack  Yes they said Jack was going to "soften up a bit" or something like that.  They said they would alter her appearance.  They said it would be dealt with in game.  They have not said any such thing about Ash.  We get a new look that makes no sense based on what we know of Ash, a vague "she's changed" and the suggestion that we're Philistines for daring to show concern for a favorite character.

Sorry, but I also remember Horizon.  I also remember some rather gratuitous shots of Miranda, Samara, and Jacob, possibly also in the name of "artistic vision".  I'm all out of trust.

"We don't compromise artistic vision"

It'd be funny if it wasn't so irritating.

I'm reminded of DC's upcoming reboot of their entire comics line.
It's mostly cool and exciting, but some decisions like cancelling Secret Six and giving Rob Liefeld a book are just perplexing and rage-inducing.

What possible reason could there be for this design other than "sex sells"?

@KateKane

"We don't compromise artistic vision" is such a load of crap, I don't know where to begin. Did someone from Bioware actually say this?

If I remember correctly, they had a bunch of great original concepts of the Reapernator that looked like they would have made for a very unsettling, surprising reveal, but they basically pidgeonholed the final concept into a "been there, done that" hulking metal skeleton that ended up looking fairly lame as a final boss. By "vision", they must mean "whatever floats our producers' boats".

Yeah, there was concept art of the Human Reaper being basically a giant fetus monster. That would have been so much more creepy and memorable than what we got.
Hell, going from the first game to the second shows exactly how much they care about their "artistic vision."
At least it wasn't nearly as bad as the switch to Dragon Age 2.

After the Mass effect games i will no longer purchase Bioware games, and the reason is because of their new found "artistic vision".

Question: would mass effect series be this huge if ME1 was like ME2 ?

Yeah I've been thinking the same too.
Unless they make another Jade Empire or Dragon Age goes back to its roots this will probably be my last Bioware game.

More than likely, it'd just have a different fan-base.

I'm pretty irritated with the reaction from the BioWare guys/girls on twitter. Ash's original writer isn't working for BioWare anymore and the first thing we see from Ash (after the totally awesome Horizon scene! Excuse my sarcasm) is her, running around in a "combat suit", built like the stuff that she made fun of in the first game. The answer from the BioWare gamedesigners to the complain? "Our artists > you. Stop complaining."

Take that and the "also Ashley was, frankly, a grunt at the start of me1 she is very different now" quote and I'm fearing that Ash got a personality to match the suit. If that's the case, than they jumped the shark with my favorite character.

But who am I to question the artistic vision?

Well, Ashley was as easy footed as everyone else in game.

But sure. She was the tomboy not the Miranda. Slap on some powerarmor then we talking as she shots the **** out of stuff.

Cool, now they are making her do the pole-dancer-shake-booty-curved-spine thing. Soldiers do that all the time! Because curving your spine in a way that  highlights your new protruding chest and butt is an essential part of assault rifle training. Why don't they take away the rifle and give her a bow instead?

This is just great.

Not a fan of the new look. Definitely at odds with the Ash that I grew to love in ME1. Seems like they're changing her up to try and net her some fans. I know I'm daring to question their vision(!!!!) but seriously, the image above is indicative of all that is wrong. Hair, suit, etc etc. The responses of many, "Oh, I now regret choosing Miranda because Ash is so hawt!" is just ridiculous.
I'm hoping there's an alternate.

LOL! Not surprised at all! I'm actually enjoying the myriad of ways Bioware continues to make the ME saga and its characters (post ME1) even more cruder, siller and weirder. I really don't care anymore since I have relegated ME2 and ME3 to glorified fanfic status anyway. :)
