....is Shepard seeing things?

Casey said during the demo that they're doing a lot to bringing Shepard into more intimate situations. The child in the demo could've been serving as a NPC that sheds light on how the Repear invasion is affecting everyone on a grander scale, not just with government or military personnel, but with normal people, too, such as the child.

OR, what I believe could be another possiblity, the child was just Shepard's hullicination. Obviously, the kid dissappeared suddenly; whether he crawled off somewhere or was really just Shepard's imagination, we're not really sure.

BUT if we were to say it was a hullicination, this could be something related to Shepards past history (Earth Hero, Spacer, Colonist). It might even be somethin exclusive to a certain background.

Just throwing that out there. Thoughts??

EDIT: For those that haven't seen this scene, watch this gameplay video, starting at 6:10.

I guess it could be a flashback of some childhood friend that Shep had. I do remember reading somewhere that BW would make shepherd's past mean more in the final game. So you may be on to something.

I thought it was a representation of Shepard's younger self.

I was just sheerly fascinated & shocked to see a child in the game at all... we've never seen one in ME (or most games for that matter, except for Fallout 3 I suppose). It was a nice little scene.. I hope it can play out a bit more in the actual release and not just have that single dialogue choice.

I liked the paragon line for it... though I half suspect the renegade line will go something like "Hey kid... wanna see a dead body?" :D

I liked that Shep's showing some emotion. Doesn't hurt that the kid was rendered pretty well.

When I saw the child, I was like HOLY CRAP. He's so lifelike. Also, the whole scene gave me shivers and made me all the more excited for ME3.

Yeah the detail on the kid's face was great and the facial animations were good too... wasn't some mutated puppet like the children in Fallout 3 hehe.

if only it was exclusive to a backstory... bioware cut so much RPG we can only dream for such an outcome, but i like the hullicination thought.

Like Casey said, I think it's just a way to stir some emotions with the player and get him/her to realise how the war is affecting everyone. It worked, that's for sure.

I was pleasantly surprised with the child. I don't care whether it's an illusion or not. Originally, Bioware kept giving the impression that children were insanely hard to animate and they probably weren't going to do it so seeing the kid made me smile.

yeah that whole scene gave me dead space 2 kind of feeling where Isaac is hallucinating and what not. I doubt our shepards are going to completely lose all sense of reality though

way to be passive aggressive for absolutely no reason. You're hopping on a very sad bandwagon there.

I would imagine that we will see alot more of that in the game...which is not a bad thing. If you listen real close, you can hear Clint working his emotional piano music in the background for that situation. I had a feeling that is why they chose him to do the music. So they can magnify the emotion for small cutscenes like the child in the ventilation shaft....

Casey did a walkthrough for the begining escape from earth with Anderson. Shep was forcing a door open when he noticed somebody crawling into a ventilation shaft in the room. Shep took time to go see who it was, and found it was a young kid trying to flee. Shep and kid share a small emotional convo.

That scene was...strange. "you can’t help me" and then vanishing? I get they want to put in emotional impact and all that but that was just a bit WTH and creepy so I’ thinking something else going on or they missed the bar a bit with trying to make it emotional.

Wait... So, you've played the final version of Mass Effect 3? Or at least seen a video featuring its RPG elements, and found them to come up short? Quick, link me before they take it down!

Has one half of the population of this forum fallen into depression or something? Seriously, the sheer negativity and, dare I say it, whiny-ness of some of these people is kind of disturbing.

Kids, female aliens, FemShep on the cover of the CE, same-sex romances....Really do love BioWare! :D
As for the kid, he was so cute...I think he was real, just scared and crawled away. I hope we see him again, though.
