Honestly, given how Sheppard can take any form that the player chooses, I'm pretty sure that kid was not a piece of his imagination.
Hmm indoctrination dosen't seem logical to me but it might be true. Hope not though - It'd kind of ruin the scene for me. The word intimate won't really apply if it's just an external party messing with his head.
The problem with RPG's is that it's hard to provide personal insight into a character when people adopt so many diferent versions of them, applying their own creed and psychology. However, when, people like me play, we don't see ourselves as an embodiment Shepard (as I presume many do), but as an author of literature, working in unity with Bioware. I'm probably a little more supportive of Bioware delving into his subconsious fears and memories than most, because I'm more accepting of Shepard being a little bit more dynamic and enigmatic.

Also Shepard must've been dead the entire time.

I play the same way, which is why it's easier for me to believe it's indoctrination. I wasn't among those who called "FOUL" when Shepard had jokes with Liara in LotSB and view my Shep as his own personal character, complete with emotions and vulnerabilities. I like to believe the Reapers are playing on the hopelessness ("everyone is dying") and futility ("you can't help me") that Shepard possesses somewhere inside him. Sorta like how Liara asks Shepard how he's really feeling in LotSB.Comsky159 wrote...

The child isn't really a child!
Rather it's a midget hired to play a child! Real kids are hard to work with on set.

I also love you for making a post that perfectly sums up my feelings about this brilliant little scene. Completely agree.Comsky159 wrote...
Ever since I heard Clint Mansell was doing the soundtrack, I knew ME3 was going to do something a lot more intimate with Shepard's character. This scene was just a work of art and has particular metaphorical meaning for a player choosing the colonist background. I've always liked the classic image of a hero shaped by pain and loss, who struggled alone through despair to become exceptional and it seems like we're really getting the opportunity to see this image clearly for the first time.
Subtly and beautifully done.
Bioware, I love you.

then the second was...wait...is this indoctrination taking Shepard - giving him the sense of powerlessness, inability to help them...
My monies on the later. However, still great to see female krogans and children in the game. The face of the horror of war is usually that of children, so what better way to drive home the impact than to have them in the game - its hard to feel passionate about saving a bunch of half rendered, repeat motion silhouettes in the distance.

Saying, "Everyone's dying," scared and confused is whats going on in every human's mind right then and there.
Shepard then offers to help him but he only says, "You can't help me," and then is gone. That showing how grim the situation is.
Not really indoctrination or any plot importance. Just a little symbolism put in by Bioware.
IMO Nicely done!
