...Just a thought, but wouldn't this be hilariously disastrous when you have friends over?

First off as everyone says it is not necessary. To me though I view it as a toy in a cereal box. Most of us don't care for the toy and just want the cereal. And the toy is one of the cheap ones you don't care for. With the kinect I find it nice, something that makes a kinect seems fun to use once in a while, but constant use would seem to get tedious after a while.

The Kinect has voice identification in its sensors.  This prevents auditory griefing.  It can be fooled, but it is very difficult.

Maybe it could be a positive.  Hubby prefers to shoot things rather than control a squad.  I could call out power commands while he rat-a-tats.

Though I would ninja his dialogue choices and start flirting with his least favorite LI character.

Edit: *Views above post.*  Nuts.

The funny thing is that Socom: US Navy Seals (PS2/2002) had voice controls. But the developers liked the d-pad commands like ME 2 so much that Socom 4 doesn't have voice commands anymore. The feature is a gimmick that MS wants to push Kinect. It makes no sense not to just add the feature for everyone because everyone has a headset, if it improves the experience. The PS Eye has mic array just like the Kinect. The only good thing about voice commands is that you can bypass the lack of quick slots on the console. The dialog part just seems too slow and clunky. One button press versus reading a sentence.

ME with the Kinect doesn't appeal to me. But if it was PS Move compatible that would make my ME3 buying decision hard.

How is speaking a line then hearing a different one any different than reading a line and hearing a different one?

I hoping someone is watching the boards but I was wondering if we use the voice command does that free up, some more buttons to use for Shepard's power ( on xbox controllers)? Ex. Instead of 3 could we have 4 or 5

Personally yelling in my living room and jumping up and down repeatedly is going to lower the immersion. Mainly because I might be able to relate to the character more in terms of what they're physically going through (although I not trained in the military) but I'm not going to experience the adrenaline. Where as the intesity of a firefight is better communicated while I'm sitting still and waiting for precisely the right momnet to pop the enemy. Kinect just can't do that for me, maybe for other players but me no.

Ah, that's good. But part of me mourns for the loss of potential "friendly" sabotage. xD

You're right! That's a great idea! It would be a cool way to make the game more interactive. I know a lot of people who have partners who enjoy watching them play games; through Kinect's voice recognition in ME3 combat they'd be able to actually participate.

That is, if there's a way to make Kinect react to not just your own voice, or if there's a way to authorize another voice to trigger commands. The possibilities!

Squad management has always been a pain in the ass. Voice commands might be a good way to alleviate that.

I bought Kinect today due to all the E3 Kinect goodness(before, it wasn't a worthy investment. Now? OH YEAH).

It won't break immersion for me. Hell, I can find a way to make it work(for example, imagining that the quote I have to read is what Shepard is thinking in his head).

I am very pleased we don't have to use it. It is a cool idea but if you select the option and Shepard says it then it feels like you said it but if you say something and then Shepard repeats it in a different way it doesn't feel like you are Shepard, just my opinion though.

Agreed.

Same. Looked a bit awkward.

Oi, and even though it was said before, I'll reinforce it.

Kinect senses different voices, so say I'm playing ME3 and I'm ordering Garrus to stop calibrating and Liara to move up, a friend can't come in and be like, "GARRUS, RESUME CALIBRATING" and have Garrus go hide in a room tapping on a terminal.

I think I'll like Kinect more when there's a lot of stuff for the hardcore gamers and hardcore titles rather than Kinect exclusives made for families.

Still, its fun.

Why can't we just use this feature with our headsets? I'm not buying a Kinect for this.

I tweeted David Silverman about headset integration (twitter.com/#!/dsilvermanea/status/77834580278775808\\) and he said the speech recognition is tied to Kinect hardware, so no headset love for PC/PS3.

Not to say it couldn't be done, it'd just be more of a hassle. I think it's more about Kinect marketing than anything else though.

I can only speak for myself, but ever since RPGs where the PC's dialogue was text and not spoken, I've read the dialogue outloud (especially right before killing a boss). So this isn't immersion breaking for me, but I can see why it would be for others. But lucky for you, it's optional.

Try it if you feel like its not as immersive as it should be.

Must have Kinect. Its a Kinect feature, so no vocally ordering your squaddies around on the PC/PS3.

My question is this, if the only feature which the kinect gives the xbox 360 for the duration of the game is a vocal recognition ability, and i don't own a kinect can i use an xbox 360 wireless headset or another microphone to give vocal commands to my squad members? or is that feature exclusively linked to the kinect peripheral?

Linked to the Kinect peripheral, otherwise the vocal recognition would be advertised elsewhere and not as a major Kinect inclusion into the game.

The combat commands are only going to immerse me further into the game. Before I was pulled out each time I had to pause the action and choose their powers through the radial menu. Now I can shout out to them during a fight without the flow being interrupted.

Kudos bioware!

Seems a pretty silly feature overall. I can click an option on the wheel far faster than I could speak it. So not really seeing the point.
But as mentioned, its completely optional, so whatever floats your boat.Image IPB

Catsuits lower immersion.

Didn't stop Bioware.
