so if we take into account that well there was actually thousands of Alliance ships above earth at the time of the invasion, does that mean the Alliance lost an entire fleet or what?

Very probably they did suffer staggering losses.

^^^ retreating is the most smart approach to something like this i highly doubt tactically trained millitary minds would just throw themselves at an enemy until they're completely gone no matter the planet being attacked

even then they would take massive casualties from the initial assault. and wouldnt they stay behind to try to give cover to evacuees/refugees?
