Yes, but this boy-in-a-vent could be a very big deal! We could be looking at a manifestation of Shepard's inner uncertainty / repressed childhood!

I saw the boy as an attempt to induce fear in the player. A boy so scared that he won't come out of the vent and then when Shepard looks away then back again he's gone taken by some husk or some other mutation.

Gosh, there is actually a civilian population on Earth? When did that happen???? I thought Earth was some sort of massive judicial planet used only for show trials and alien invasions...

Or sometimes a kid in a vent is just a kid in a vent. Sheesh (and a homage to Alien)

 I personally think he's just a boy hiding in the vent -- to represent who Shepard is trying to protect, that kind of thing. He could have just hidden around the corner when Shepard looked away. 

It would be really interesting if it turned out to be something more than that, though. Maybe it'll just be something you get to interpret however you want.

He could be there just to add an emotional moment, I mena lets face it the kid kid is probably not gonna make it if he stays on Earth, and help people understand what they are fighting for.

BTW, you realize that is probably the first kid in ME series? But I hope it is the first and last one we saw in ME3, I don't want children in my sci-fi.

You'd think 2 days unconcious on Project base would have some effect on him, wonder if indoctrination is slowly catching up to him.

The kid exists for one and only reason: Bioware wants to show players youth&innocence they need to protect from big bad machines.
No indoctrination, no conspiration theories, it is just a kid in a vent to remind Shepard what he is fighting for.

I bet if your Fem Shep in this scene it is a scared little girl as well.

Bioware could check your skin and hairstyles to make an image as Shephard as a child the same way Dragon Age 2 had the family system for making what your family looked like.

It's definitely Sheps mind playin tricks on him.
