What did you guys think of the rail-shooting? Do you like the segment or do you feel it detriments the gameplay?

My thoughts are written in the poll.

Opinions?

Poll: social.bioware.com/1410663/polls/20886/

Edit: Let me be clear. This is not a debate just state whether you like it or not and why.

I'm okay with it happening occasionally.

Generally they're used to stage big, scripted events that are major to the story and/or used to show off more of the scenery. That, and they're good at breaking up the monotony of combat.

if combat is monotonous, the gameplay designers have done something wrong

If done correctly these sections would allow you to get a bigger picture of the fight going on as well as let you focus on events that you would not normally be able to in normal gameplay and helps to break up the gameplay a bit more

I'm totally okay with them having occaisional on rail segments to break up the on-foot action. I mean, all they're doing is adding a little variety to the gameplay in the end

True. It could just end up being similar to the short-lived car chase in LOTSB.

However, I fear this is what ME3 would end up becoming. A schizophrenic, fast-paced shooter that jumps from one epic setpiece to another.

You know... like ANOTHER action-packed shooter that the current market is overstaturated with.

Just my fear from what I saw and by no means true.

Needs to be a "it depends" in your poll :)

Rail shooting is fine. Standard shooter fare, whatever. Just don't have too much of it.

If done well they are a fun break from regular combat. Just so long as its not over used.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions if I were you; in the end, you'll just get worked up over what, in the end, will likely be nothing. Wait until BioWare have actually released a little more info on the game before you start agonizing over unknown details, or worrying that they're completely stripping out the vehicle segments in favour of on-rails shooting.

My apologies. I forgot an option for my fellow moderates.

Not sure if I can add another option so just vote for one that seems are more align to your opinion.

From what we see, this rail-shooting doesn't seem to be a major gameplay feature except for one level.

Is your opinion more positive (yes) or more negative (no)?

As long as it is rare and it makes sense in the context of a scenario. Obviously, it is extremely useful to be as mobile as possible when fighting a gargantuan, bullet-proof spider. That's fine.

I'd also like to see a scene similar to that of Metal Gear Solid 4, where all the mercenaries in the Middle East area of the game are driven insane by their nano-machines and you have to fight them off the top of the APC you're fleeing with while simultaneously using the APC's mounted machine gun to kill the giant robots trying to stop you. Yeah, that game is pretty much insane.

Sorry for being ignorant, and I'm not sure where everyone saw this, but what is rail shooting?

Well my knee jerk impression was negative, because it solidified the whole trailer as basically a shooter trailer, which is completely and utterly uninteresting to me.

However, I don't want to be spoiled for story stuff so logically I should be fine with a shooter trailer :D  But I wish they'd shown us some skill trees and stuff. More concrete info on the powers, more concrete info on the RPG elements like stats and weapon mods.

Shooter gameplay...yawn. We've seen it 100 times before. So yeah my impression of the rails was negative.

A shooter in which the player movement is restricted so they can only
follow a linear, predetermined path. This style of game is considered
very "arcadey" and is usually accompanied by a lightgun.

The lart part is probably not true.

Think of the last level in COD4 (which I thought was fun) but have since then been overused in FPS games.

Basically someone is driving the vehicle for you while you shoot a turret. It was in the demo.

Didn't like it.

Don't get me wrong, the presentation was great. Good graphics, sound, etc. But...

Well firstly, what the hell is Shepard trying to achieve by firing that pathetic weapon at a reaper? IT'S A REAPER, SHEPARD. I DON'T THINK YOU'RE HAVING MUCH EFFECT ON IT.

Secondly, on-rails turret sections have been done to death. TO. DEATH.

So no, I wasn't impressed by that one part.

I voted no. On rail segments get VERY monotonous after repeated play-throughs.

It's a crutch.

It's not good design.

I don't mind, as long as it's not either:
A: A replacement for all possible vehicle combat, and heavy combat for larger foe
and B: Common, such as in every major level or mission.

Either of those, and I consider it terrible, I think something like that should only happen two to four times at maximum in the entire game.  As small as those numbers seem, I find that to be the amount of times I can consider it acceptable before it gets boring.

Great to see some moderates here. Most people tend to overreact and just call the entire game as trash because of one trailer.

Well, I think Shepard didn't except a live Reaper first of all and was therefore unprepared for what they saw. Also, it's human nature. When we see a threat, we want to do something about it even it doesn't work.

Its not my favorite part of the games I have played, but if its done well and not used a lot I can't see it being too bad for it can help expand the areas we are fighting so it doesn't feel like we are just fighting in one small area.

I would much rather see the awesomeness that is vehicles that is Halo. There are few things in gaming more amazing that taking down a Scarab with a couple of warthogs or ghosts. Now that scene where you assault the two with Banshee's OMG.

Please Bioware give us epic outdoor vehicular battles

If Assassins Creed and Metal Gear Solid can make me enjoy rail-shooting then there's a possibility that it's good. As long as they don't use it to carry the gameplay it seems awesome. Especially if there was a scene where Shepard and a ton of tanks are driving up and everyone is having their little "rail shooter" experience.

BTW, is it just me or did the poll seem kinda biased. No offence OP, but if you want an accurate representation of opinion put it in your post, not on the poll. Otherwise people will think "Wow, it seems like not alot liked that section. I thought it was kinda cool but I'll vote no since I don't wanna be the sole man out."
