The Heavy Melee attack lets us one-shot enemies as long as we can get within range and deal with the wind up time, Charge lets you close any distance you want and staggers your victim. Do I ever actually have to use my Shotgun?
With the Heavy Melee attack can Vanguards clear levels without firing a shot?

Keep in mind, on higher difficulties, you need to be killing quickly and moving to cover after a charge. With the wind-up time on the super-melee attacks, it probably wouldn't be efficient to use that all the time on higher difficulties. You'd be vulnerable for far too long in most circumstances, based on my experiences from ME2. Could be totally different in 3, but somehow I imagine you would want to use the super-melee situationally, instead of all the time.
Off the top of my head, a good trick would be to toss a grenade at a clustered group, then charge and super-melee a separate individual target, then quickly find cover while the group that got hit with the grenade is still recovering.

Hmm... prabably not. What with snipers and using a mix of heavy soldiers (like Krogan) and people behind cover not to mention the new 'changing battlefield enviroment' it seems unlikely you will be able to melee the whole game.
Though it does seem like melee will be vary useful for vanguard.

That melee attack appears to have a large wind-up. I bet you need to hit them with a shot first to stun 'em while you wind up.

that "huge wind up" could mean a charge stab/slash

I doubt it. I think it will offer some playstyle options is all.

Good luck surviving that tactic on Insanity.
Also, the heavy melee attack isn't a one-shot-kill attack. It's just doing a lot of damage.

Wonder if the adept's version will be like Jack's "falcon-punch".
Will certainly have a lot of fun with pull+punch combos.

On Casual, yes.
Anything else, no.

the heavy melee requires that you hold the button rather than just hit it.
possible? i suppose someone will try it, i doubt it'll be possible to do it though since theres always guys on ledges you cant reach and such that you have to shoot.
i also doubt i'll work well on higher difficulties

You can't use inferno ammo on an onmi blade, which is hands down one of the best abilities in the game, because of the fire dance through protections effect

I'd think Tactical Cloak would be better suited to heavy melee'ing your way through the game. Backstab class FTW - Infiltrators were already my favorite class in ME2 thanks to the synchronicity between Cloak and the GPS; this new melee stuff seems like icing on the cake.

HEY!!!
"vanguards, the class most capable of taking out enemies without the use of weapons."
finally bioware did something apropriate.
oops wrong class.

I am a bit concerned melee attacks will be too powerful. They were already too powerful in ME2 imo. I like the idea of having new animations but I don't want the new attacks to be too powerful. I also think certain enemies that have powerful ranged attacks could be significantly more vulnerable to melee attacks where the main challenge lies in getting close to it.

I think the animation time is long enough that on higher difficulties its going to be extremely risky to use your heavy melee when there are multiple enemies active. Even if you don't get killed, you'll probably have to seek cover immediately. On easier difficulties? You're overpowered already, so I don't see it being a big deal. I'm guessing that on Veteran difficulty and up, you'll reserve heavy melee for killing the last one or two enemies in an encounter.

The animation didn't seem much if any longer than the reload animation, so I don't think it will be any more of an issue than only using the claymore to get through levels.
