To clarify: I have already preordered the Collector's PC Edition, played the first two games MANY times, & was blown away from what I saw in the 4 demos released today. I enjoyed the new fighting mechanics shown in game (including the omni-blade) as well as the places shown and scope of it all. I hope we get to see the RPG aspects soon though since that is what really makes this game stand out! Image IPB

I understand Bioware really wants the scope to be BONKERS on this title and it should be. The site of the giant reaper landing nearly on top of you was breathtaking.

What has me a little concerned, although I have faith since it is Bioware, is this:
 Image IPB
When I saw the giant thing come out of the ground I groaned a little bit.Image IPB It reminds me too much of the walker from Halo 2 and seems kind of shoehorned in to make the scope bigger.

In my opinion, the most fatal flaw, and one of the very few, found in ME2 was the giant terminator boss fight at the end. It was rather ridiculous and just plain corny, but maybe that's just me since it used the EXACT same sounds/music from that scene which I'm sure will be changed before launch. Image IPB

The footage from the aformetioned demo isn't corny but makes me think: is it necessary? What was shown does not seem to provide anything special to make it necessary & stand out from any other on-rail, over the top scene from other games (although I know there is more to it than was shown; I speculate this is where the thresher maw takes the reaper down). I would expect this from something like Bulletstorm, Gears of War, Duke Nukem Forever, or Resistance but not Mass Effect.

I like on-rail segments but only a VERY limited amount so I hope this is the case with ME3.

Thoughts? Image IPB
Discuss. Image IPB

I think this is getting lost in the slew of other posts since yesterday's E3 reveal.

Anybody? I'd seriously like to know some thoughts on this.

Agreed... they will have to try and balance the different types of combat in this game, but I see no reason to believe every (or even most) fights will be of that scale. I look forward to seeing how combat against humanoid bosses will play out... especially if Kai Leng makes an appearance.

They had to bring out the big guns for the E3 presentation. Going off of what InfiniteCuts said, we have an entire plotline with Cerberus to finish up and we know we're gonna see Kai Leng so I wouldn't worry too much.

I agree with you OP. If every mission has some "epicly awesome" moment like the reaper base demo, it becomes redundant and uninteresting. Having those big set piece moments can be incredible, like the demo of andersen and shep on earth with the Reapers landing. But I hope bioware doesn't feel the need to cram the game full of such set pieces. What really makes the ME games' epic moments so memorable and intense is the dramatic and emotional buildup that leads to them. If it makes sense for there to be an on-rails shooting sequence with huge scripted explosions and reapers crashing down, great. But I hope they don't fill the game with these moments for their own sake.

I think they need to up the scale. You're meant to be fighting the Reapers across the galaxy and the best way to do that is to, well, fight Reapers. As long is it can be pulled off well I think the larger scale Bioware is going for will be great. This is the last game in the trilogy, I'll be disappointed if they don't up the scale and really make this feel like a conflict against the Reapers.

However, I hope there aren't many on-rails sections, I've never been a fan of theme. One or two will be fine though.

Actually, I quite liked the scope of the scene. Probably because dat Reaper looks genuinely imposing, as opposed to the Terminator runt we got in ME2.
I'm sure we'll have plenty of smaller-scale, more intimate moments, and that fighting footsoldiers is going to feel just fine.

My issue with that section isn't the size. It's the apparent stupidity of the supposed Reaper which chooses to pointlessly chase Shepard on foot instead of just slicing him in half with the precise laser we've seen they're equipped with, in the earth landing section.

Nothing takes the "scary" out of the enemies like having them act dumb like a brick.

How so? It performs a logical function, unlike the space terminator. The Reapers can't exterminate and collect all advanced organic beings in the galaxy without going groundside at some point, and a smaller (relatively speaking!) mobile platform like that would be very useful against hardened targets like bunkers and military posts.

Exactly. Plus, consider how much power a reaper uses to stay airbourne compared to, say, physically landing on the ground? If our technology is anything to go by, then it is indeed much less.

The Normandy just bombed the living hell out of that reaper - its not unfeasible to assume that its weapons were damaged.

To be fair, the space terminator wasn't suppost to do anything except gestate.

Unless you meant plotwise?

You can see its gun power up right in the cutscene where it emerges.

Even if it was the case, you still have the Reaper proceed to pointlessly chase a mobile gun turret which can't even hurt it rather than do something sensible, like seek cover from a spaceship with bombs that can? (and ultimately does) It must've been more than just the weapons that got damaged. End effect still being, the enemy acts mook-level dumb.

Idk if it was stupid but was it entirely necessary? I'm not sure. In terms of the giant walker's intelligence? Yes it seems to be stupid since it's chasing a what would be the equivalent of us chasing an ant and isn't using it's "foot" (metaphor for the laser) to squash it.

What got me about the scene was Shepard shooting at it with the turret. If that's actually doing something, the reapers seem a lot weaker than they're supposed to.

I don't think it really seemed to be doing something. If I were in that position and had a HUGE gun I'd be shooting the giant thing even though it doesn't really do anything for the sake of doing SOMETHING.
