Agreed. Cannons can only be romanced by Garrus. I'm hoping for a steamy calibration scene in ME3.

my immediate thought was that there would be ten total, rather than eight. still less than twelve, and i think it works better with the possibility of killed off squad, or dlc characters.

i figure there has to be 6 absolutely for sure squadmates, and the other 4 or so would be like, bonus squadmates, per say. As for those for sure, we have Ashley or Kaidan, Vega, and (as much as i despise the decision to make her permanent) liara. So my guess is there will be 3 more brand new characters to fill that void.

As for any other characters, i originally thought there would be 4 ME2 characters that could be recruited who may or may not be alive. Tali and Garrus, and 2 others. (my best guesses would be jack... and then either grunt or miranda) But now with this prothean dlc character the question is wether or not it is a fullly voiced/interactable character or if its like the kasumi/zaeed situation.

i think its kind of ridiculous to assume there will only be one new character(vega) and the rest are all returning. i mean, do you really want that, there needs to be variety. The returning characters stories are already largely played out, i mean, do you want every character to be busy with calibrations!?

You`ve made an assumption that I dissagree with.

I mean we have had like what... 20 hours with these characters.

I`ve been around for 22 years and I`ve still got new stuff happening all the time. And I mean you could hang out with me for 20 hours and you wouldnt learn everything about me. 

To answer your question though... Yes I really want that(returning squad).

Technically, I think that Jacob and Thane were the vanguards of ME2 (though, as you point out, they blurred class roles a bit more in the sequal compared to the very clear-cut ME1). 

In terms of a replacement for Ashley, it's been thrown about that James Vega is a tank - but he's with Shepard regardless of who survived Virmire.  Otherwise, in terms of our soldiers, we're looking at Grunt or Zaeed.

As for a sentinel to take the place of Kaidan, Miranda's the only ME2 possibility - and she's both popular and very difficult to kill, so I reckon she's likely to be a squadmate at least some of the time.

Liara has been given special treatment, beyond any doubt.  That doesn't change the fact that there is no canon Shepard in ME and no canon LI.  One type of Shepard might get more marketing than others (paragon/renegade, male/female, any given class), but that doesn't mean that a canon exists exalted above others wherein Shepard is like this definitively from the point of view of the character's creators and all other Sheps aren't quite as real.  The same is true of LIs.  Liara has gotten more exposure than any of them (even Miranda), but that doesn't make her LI status canonical.  (That's not what canon means.)  Bioware ultimately leaves the choice to the player - in terms of who Shepard is and who Shepard loves (within the limits of the game, of course), there is no higher authority than the player.

Let me know how that goes for you; BW has stated there is no canon.

The logic says only your LI will return as a permanent squadmate (if alive) + Liara (see:plot armor) + Ash/Kaidan + Vega + 4 or 5 new squadmates which either were unknown or were not playable in me1&2. At least this is what Cassey Hudson anticipated in gametrailers.

Total would be 8-9 squadmates.

Thane is possible. Zaeed and Legion were both awesoem but not LIs so it's doubtful

Probably. Fewer companions than in ME2 + the fact that you can kill off some of them in the previous game = not good.

So it's safe to say we're not getting a day one character in the collectors edition. This pisses me off because they make it awesome with that then they take it out.

The best thing to do would be to look at the squadmate condition as a 'what would they be doing' kinda thing. So, the confirmed ones dont need to be accounted for, Garrus, Tali, Ash/Kaiden, Liara. That leaves us with:

Wrex - We know he will probably be leading the Krogan Army, Urdnot being the strongest clan
Grunt - I see no reason why Grunt can't be with us, the only thing stopping him is if he agrees to be 'cloned' to create an army of perfect krogan
Jack - I don't care if Jack is back or not, but, in all honesty, she has no where else to go, no home or anything like that.
Jacob - I think he might stick with Shep, but then again, he might A) go back to the Alliance and you meet him and his squad, or Stick with Cerberus and you meet him and his squad
Kasumi - I dont think she'll be a squad member, can't imagine her doing anything else, but she's DLC
Legion - We've seen him driving a Geth Car thing, but that doesn't confirm wether he is temp or not. My guess is he would become the leader of the Geth, rallying them. Of course, he is the only mobile platform, so he would have to re-link back with them somehow
Miranda - I really want Miri back, but I think Cerberus might have her somewhere. She eiher left, and knowing how much she does about Cerberus means she would be a high priority 'kill' target, or she stayed with them and became indctrinated
Mordin - I have no idea about Mordin
Samara/Morinth - They'd probably be doing their own thing on Thessia, maybe temp squaddie
Thane - Thane is dying, so I think he will be in no condition to fight
Zaeed - I think Zaeed will be fighting, but not with Shep, as he is DLC

That's my thoughts on it

I wouldn't mind a Vorcha as a squadmate.
I'm actually hoping to get one.
To me personally, they're a very interesting species and haven't been really explored.
So some one-on-one time getting to talk with one after every mission would probably teach me a lot about their species and culture.

"Hey, Grunt, stop making Vorcha jokes!".

A Batarian would be my second choice.
I'm not opposed to them as a culture and some of them have proven to be quite socialable with humans and other species.
The guy from Bring Down the Sky, Cafka, the sick Batarian on Omega and the Batarian holding Daniel captive all are quite reasonable people if you handle the situation with a little tact.
And then there was Garrus' Batarian friend as well.

Aside from Ashley, Grunt, Garrus, Tali and Legion, I would like to have Miranda back as well.
She was one of my favorite ME2 characters (see above for the other 2).

A Rachni Soldier would be another preferred option, but I'm uncertain how likely that is.

Biotic squadmates, I have no use for, so they don't matter to me in terms of gameplay.

Subject Zero, she's dead (I killed her on purpose), so who cares whether or not she's coming back, because she won't for me!

I most likely won't use anyone other then specified above.
Pretty much everyone else will be benched.
And if I don't get Grunt or Legion, Garrus will just take their place as Ashley's partner.
