It seems like all the possible love interests will be squaddies if Jack is available. Would Samara count? Which remind me, Kelly, better have kept my fish well fed or she's going to have some more dancing to do.

Jacob is confirmed to not return as either a fllt-time or temp-squadmate since nobody used him due to his weak skills.

LMAO.

The logic says only your LI will return as a permanent squadmate (if alive) + Liara (see:plot armor) + Ash/Kaidan + Vega + 4 or 5 new squadmates which either were unknown or were not playable in me1&2. At least this is what Cassey Hudson anticipated in gametrailers.

Total would be 8-9 squadmates.

*crosses fingers*

Well, they've pretty much confirmed Garrus and Tali as permanent squadmates, regardless of LI status (assuming of course they survived ME2)

My eight ideal atm would be

Garrus
Tali
Liara
Ashley
James Vega
Legion
Thane
Zaeed Massani

Working with Grunt AND Wrex alongside Mordin as temporary companions would also float my boat

You're pretty much guaranteed 2/3 of your "menage' a quatorze'" since Mordina nd Wrex were seen/heard working together in that demo they revealed yesterday.

So it's safe to say we're not getting a day one character in the collectors edition. This pisses me off because they make it awesome with that then they take it out.

If you get the Collector's Edition, you get a downloadable mission and character:

A Batarian would be my second choice.
I'm not opposed to them as a culture and some of them have proven to be quite socialable with humans and other species.
The guy from Bring Down the Sky, Cafka, the sick Batarian on Omega and the Batarian holding Daniel captive all are quite reasonable people if you handle the situation with a little tact.
And then there was Garrus' Batarian friend as well.

I really never "got" people who wanted a Batarian, but, recently, I've decided it wouldn't be THAT bad of an idea. Posted Image

The best thing to do would be to look at the squadmate condition as a 'what would they be doing' kinda thing. So, the confirmed ones dont need to be accounted for, Garrus, Tali, Ash/Kaiden, Liara. That leaves us with:

Wrex - We know he will probably be leading the Krogan Army, Urdnot being the strongest clan
Grunt - I see no reason why Grunt can't be with us, the only thing stopping him is if he agrees to be 'cloned' to create an army of perfect krogan
Jack - I don't care if Jack is back or not, but, in all honesty, she has no where else to go, no home or anything like that.
Jacob - I think he might stick with Shep, but then again, he might A) go back to the Alliance and you meet him and his squad, or B) Stick with Cerberus and you meet him and his squad
Kasumi - I dont think she'll be a squad member, can't imagine her doing anything else, but she's DLC
Legion - We've seen him driving a Geth Car thing, but that doesn't confirm wether he is temp or not. My guess is he would become the leader of the Geth, rallying them. Of course, he is the only mobile platform, so he would have to re-link back with them somehow
Miranda - I really want Miri back, but I think Cerberus might have her somewhere. She eiher left, and knowing how much she does about Cerberus means she would be a high priority 'kill' target, or she stayed with them and became indctrinated
Mordin - I have no idea about Mordin
Samara/Morinth - They'd probably be doing their own thing on Thessia, maybe temp squaddie
Thane - Thane is dying, so I think he will be in no condition to fight
Zaeed - I think Zaeed will be fighting, but not with Shep, as he is DLC

That's my thoughts on it

Pretty solid reasoning there. [Spoilers ahead if you're avoiding those]  Based on the demos they've shown, it seems like Mordin and Legion (and maybe Wrex) are just temporary squaddies. Shepard shows up with Liara and Garrus as his squad and Mordin and Legion are part of the plot, rather than "playable." Maybe at some point in those missions they do join you -- like when you hop in the cab in LOTSB and have to get rid of one of your other squaddies in favor of Liara -- for a bit, but it seems like that's "their mission," you know?

Wrex... I don't know. Probably temporary I would think. That's definitely something they would keep close to the chest for now, though, so who knows?

Now to totally make my post redundant: didn't they confirm that Legion and Mordin were only temporary team members in the GameInformer print article?

I wouldn't mind a Vorcha as a squadmate.
I'm actually hoping to get one.
To me personally, they're a very interesting species and haven't been really explored.
So some one-on-one time getting to talk with one after every mission would probably teach me a lot about their species and culture.

"Hey, Grunt, stop making Vorcha jokes!".

Aside from Ashley, Grunt, Garrus, Tali and Legion, I would like to have Miranda back as well.
She was one of my favorite ME2 characters (see above for the other 2).

A Rachni Soldier would be another preferred option, but I'm uncertain how likely that is.

Biotic squadmates, I have no use for, so they don't matter to me in terms of gameplay.

Subject Zero, she's dead (I killed her on purpose), so who cares whether or not she's coming back, because she won't for me!

I most likely won't use anyone other then specified above.
Pretty much everyone else will be benched.
And if I don't get Grunt or Legion, Garrus will just take their place as Ashley's partner.

I'm really hoping they do more with the Vorcha and Batarians and elevate them from their status of one note enemies from the past games. The Vorcha in particular would make excellent shock troops against hordes of husks.

Legion's status has not been confirmed as perm or temp either way yet - we know Wrex and Mordin are temps, but that's it. Personally I think Legion should be a permie - he's a very unique character and despite how late we got him in ME2, he was probably one of the new faves for people, myself included. I hated the time limit on getting to use him due to the game pacing :\\

My money is on seven or eight.

I agree. This would be ideal Seven or eight + DLC.

I agree.  And I think Miranda and Jacob will be the last two so all love interests are in the squad so the romances can continue.

Has their been any more news on this front? I'm having trouble keeping up with all the latest E3 News due to Timezone confusions.

Like alot of people i am really hoping and praying to Bioware that Miranda returns as a Fulltime Squadmember.

Aside from the fact Miranda is my shepards LI <3, i really enjoyed her Character as a whole and Yvonne's Performance in the role was exceptional in my opinion.
I feel she is an incredibly interesting character with alot of potential for her story to grow.

I began my journey with Garrus and Tali by my side. I defeated Saren with them both with me. I destroyed the Collectors and the Human Reaper with Garrus and Tali there supporting me. I'm going to finish this battle with them, from the beginning to the bitter end.

It's easier to try and narrow down who WON'T be a permanent squad member. Mordin and Wrex are all but confirmed not to be. Thane's health could be a good reason he's not there. Samara/Morinth probably won't be joining us since Liara fulfills the "sexy Asari" role. Jacob was a nice buddy, but he could so easily be written out to either be with the Alliance again or a faction of Cerberus. Legion I think they said isn't permanent either. The DLC characters, Kasumi and Zaeed, probably will miss the "essential" list but show up to help.

I'd say Jack, Grunt, and Miranda are the most probable ones to return (though Jack could be some pirate queen or something, Grunt could be doing his best to breed with the ladies for the war effort, and Miranda could be indoctrinated and shambling around with the other Cerberus drones).

Though, honestly, I'd love to "recruit" Conrad Vernor, Blasto the Jellyfish, and the all-powerful "Biotic God" Volus. The Reapers wouldn't stand a chance.

Well, we've never seen much of Batarians, so I'd like to have one for much the same reason as I want a Vorcha, to learn more about them.
I'm assuming he (or she) will have to be to an exceptional individual, already predispositioned to work with humanity and other species for the greater good of the galaxy.
Let's face it, conversations filled with Batarian anti-human sentiments aren't going to be that interested,

Actually, apart from the late Jella (see Mass Effect: Revelation), has there ever been a female Batarian?

I heard that the DLC squadmember would be a Prothean, but immediately after reading that, a Dev said that was not confirmed.
Now I'm officially confused!

By the way, is the Collectors Edition the one on pre-order from Origin?
In case my local game store doesn't get the CE, I preordered the one from Origin to make sure I get the ingame bonuses.
