In the E3 demo, Shepard on Earth comes across a small child hiding in one of the many maintenence vents in the Citadel. Shepard offers a helping hand but the kid is reluctantant. Shepa gets interuppted by Anderson telling him to stop ripping from ALIENS and when he turns back he sees the kid is gone. Now. From a purely narrative standpoint. What if we saved the kid? What if we brought him on the ship as a last minute refuge?

It would have been interesting to see the world of Mass Effect and the destruction caused by the Reapers from the perspective of a small child. After every mission we could talk to the kid and he would tell about all the stuff he has seen & heard. Shepard would have to simply some heavy stuff for him to understand. The kid could be like Shpeard's concience and give his opinion in a basic manner. He could also converse with squadmates and know about them. The kid would represent the ultimate goal, saving the future of humanity.

Thoughts?

Oh and should totally name the kid Casey.

Most people have come to the conclusion that the child is Shepard's subconscious manifested either through guilt (Arrival), fear, or indoctrination.

I felt so bad for the kid. Where's the Paragon Interrupt? My uber-Paragon FemShep is going to be angsting over that one. :(

I hope it's not some subconscious manifestation. If it is, will it be a girl for FemSheps? O_o

The kid would most likely have died in the rush to the Normandy. look at what happens almost immediately after, an alliance ship blows up and the shockwave sends Shep down this huge drop into some rubble. No way some little kid would live through that.

"Saving" that kid would have been incredibly foolhardy and would have gotten him killed, while at the same time risking Shep's neck.

I like the concept that the kid represents Shepard's guilt. His dialog would be structured as such.
Imagine if we saw the same kid again and again on different missions. Hell of a mind screw.

Oh and at one point the kid would be threatened by Harbinger and Shep would be like, "GET AWAY FROM HIM YOU ****!"

I agree with this.

As for the idea that's it's Shep's subconscious or reaper indoctrination. I could see that too. Maybe when he says "you can't help", it's like the reapers saying "you can't help your species, give up".

I'm for the interpretation that it's a subconscious thing. If I were a kid in that situation and someone offered me help, I'd take it, so... it seems odd, personally. Saving the kid would've been a bad decision, though.
With all that pressure and emotional stress, a little hallucination/subconscious manifestation/whatever you want to call it wouldn't be unheard of.

I think it's indoctrination and fear since the kid says "You can't help me" reflecting maybe Shepard's worry and helplessness in the situation. Sorta like how Ashley said that she was a foot soldier but couldn't do much against space ships.

Yep <

However, I'm really liking that idea, OP! It really adds a really unique perspective to game that hasn't been used before.

I'm alllll for it, but, as others have mentioned, getting out of that building with the kid would probably be fatal. :(
