I love digital distribution.

It's a tradeoff of control vs. convenience, but IMO the convenience win is totally worth the minor control tradeoff.

Of course that's predicated on handing control to a company I actually trust, like Valve or GoG. No way in hell I'm going to be an early adopter for a digital distribution service run by the likes of EA.

So far I've bought the most super-duperest version of each Mass Effect that was available on Steam (I actually re-bought ME1 so I wouldn't have to screw around with hardcopies). I'd totally pony up for the super duper digital version of ME3 today if I could. But I can't.

*No publisher bashing here*

.  I don't trust them. Will the game be on Steam at all?

Edit: Changed title to better reflect concern.

Don't jump to conclusions just yet. Steam doesn't announce for pre-sales and stuff for a while and the game's release date was announced today. I, too, am planning to buy it for Steam and would be really upset if they don't but still, it's too soon to tell.

The digital CE promo says "only on Origin", so, not jumping.

EA's attempt to copy Steam.  And the sole distribution method (so far) for ME3's digital CE as well as all versions of the upcoming Star Wars MMO.  If you thought DRM on their software was bad before...

EA's version of steam.
I am planning on buying a physical copy. I'm not buying off origin.

Yeah I'm not touching this "Origin", if its not on steam then it looks like I'm walking down to gamestop and doing the pre-order through them. On a side note i think i found the "perfect" spokesperson for their service here.

I love just DL from Steam but if no CE edition from Steam I'll just go buy a CE somewhere, I wouldn't want Origin to have thoughts that they may somehow compete with Steam.

Also why preorder ANYTHING from Origin at full price as D2D and Steam alost always give a %10 discount on preorders....silly EA.

Collectors Edition

physical copies > digital copies

No. Even if you like the physical swag, do what Valve did with the HL2 collectors editions and mail out the artbook, posters etc. I do not have fond memories of the CDKey shuffle every time I upgrade my rig.

But looks like I will have to revert to physical copies for EA games, they're doing this for Alice too it seems - days from release and no sign of a Steam version anywhere.

Edit: thread title was altered? did this get merged or something?
Edit 2: Ah, I see the ninja now. You could perhaps have left the company name in so it was clear who I was saying I didn't trust.

I'll pick up the retail version, keys are probably going to be registered to the BioWare account anyways. EA can screw themselves with Origin. I'd use it if it weren't for these cheap tactics and if they had a better client.

I changed the title because developers who peruse the forums are more likely to answer in a thread if the title is in the form of a question rather than some ultimatum

Fair enough, but it was more a statement of intent than an ultimatum. I won't buy a digital CE from Origin. I would buy one from Steam, today even, if I could.

I won't buy digitally from the EA again, I tried it once back before I knew better.

If its anything like ME2, Steam really won't put any information on their website until a couple of weeks before release, so probably early March. I am really hoping that its only exclusive to Origins for awhile and then more widely available.

EA is putting a lot of money and effort into making Origin your go to for games. One of the ways they *seem* to be doing this, is by only offering their games digitally through Origin (you can still purchase it retail as usual). Or offering special editions only through their portal. Etc. This gives them a monopoly on a subset of games, and when you're buying games from a place already, you're more likely to buy again/more when you have an account and are already using the system.

Not saying this is a strategy they should or shouldn't be using, but that seems to be where they are taking it.

Even if it is anti-competitive practices to force consumers into a single avenue to get their fix, it does make sense. It's hard to offer a new product (even a superior one, which I'm not saying Origin is) and compete with already established monopolies like Steam. Trick or no, they are using what they have avaliable to them (their own games) to offer an incentive to switch services. Much like how phone companies try to offer phones or services exclusive to their service.

Before my post was edited, I made it clear that I understand why they're doing this. They're pressing one of their few competitive advantages vs Steam by having things exclusive to the service.

My point is I won't play along. Digital Distribution requires a lot more trust than olde-fashioned box copies. EA do not have a good record on these issues, so an exclusive is not enough to overcome the trust deficit and make me want to use their service.

Edit: i can't spell

Yeah and I kinda expanded on it in my own edit. And I really have no direct opinion on it since I've never dealt with EA online before.

It's unfortunate when companies try to force you into their service with little goodlies like CE's exclusive to you, or bonus items only avaliable for pre-ordering through so-and-so. And there will always be the ones that don't buy into it, and there will always be the ones who do, even if begrudgingly. Always comes down to how bad you want something. *nod*

That figures. :/ I hope they realize they're losing sales by doing that. I'll just wait for the collectors edition of the entire ME series then.

I believe they are hoping to balance it off by gaining new costumers who use Origin (as since it is owned by EA, they will get the full price of it, and the third-party distributor won't have to get a cut).

I agree, I hate having everything linked with online accounts, having to download it kills my bandwidth and Internet is not cheap. I also just feel more comfortable knowing I have the CD for some strange reason. I will buy off steam but I don't trust EA enough to buy off their store.
