There's other things like muscle density and kinetics. Knowing how to fight is a big deal. Martial arts of all kinds is all about getting optimal kinetics and/or muscle usage against the most critical areas of a combatant in any given fight situation. Same goes for defending yourself.
Agreed. I don't look muscular at all (I even have a nice little scotsman gut), but I surprise people with my strength. Why? Because my muscles are toned, not bulked. I can't bench-press a car, no, but I can lift a 50pound box and carry it across campus no problem.
Shepard would be the same way. She'd have toned, defined muscles, but not big ones. And she wouldn't have a trace of body-fat, not with all the running and gunning she does + the superman metabolism that lets her drink ryncol without a trip to the hospital.
