Why doesn't the Reaper just fry Shepard with a laser instead of chasing him in the Reaper base demo?

Well my impression is that it was the classic plot armor plot device. Not that plot armor is necessarily a bad thing all the time...in fact it wasn't such a big deal and I didn't really notice it, I just assumed that since it was one of the smaller Reapers and it was damaged so much by weaponry it couldn't do it.

EDIT: Also I have this feeling that that reaper was sent by the Reapers as a smaller reaper that could help defend the geth or something like that...the Reapers probably didn't want to hand over one of their bigger ones or something

The reaper was obviously interrupted by normandy's strike. It was probably charging its batteries or something.

Took the thread this long to get it.

That reasoning fails. We already know people can be brought back from the dead, they could just kill him, and bring him back after the reaping. They killed him once.

Hence it was hiding in that base.

There are a number of reasons:

Either the reaper was too small to have a death lazor
They wanted Shepard alive and unharmed so they could use him for like a Reaper Style thingy
The Reaper was malfunctioning
Cerberus/Geth had toyed with the reaper and destroyed/inhibited its ability to use its lazor
It wanted to squish Shepard because that is more satisfying.

Because, in case you haven't noticed it yet... Reapers are kinda overconfident, megalomaniacal, morons.

They're big dumb machines doing the same thing they've done for millions of years. There is a flaw in their programming. And now, humanity, using the pathetic other species of the galaxy, is going to show them what it's like to be the ones getting reaped.

It doesn't, They already know that Shepard is a Iconic person that is gathering the galaxy against them. If they get Shepard alive and indocrinate him, they could use him to create a big havoc inside the "galatic army" or even give intel about the council location, fleets positions and what else they might think it's interesting. A dead Shepard wouldn't have the same effect, because it would take time to revive him, people would know that he got killed and he wouldn't looks like himself.

Not if they literally vapourized him with a laser.

I mean seriously dude, there are laws of physics involved here. If you shoot Shepard to death with a normal gun, or otherwise just beat him up, he might be recoverable. Like when he simply fell onto an ice-planet.

Hit him with a laser designed to punch holes in starships? He'll literally be... well, molecules... maybe even just atoms. The information that makes him Shepard will be utterly and irrevocably destroyed.

So "trying to take him alive" is a perfectly reasonable explanation, if the Reaper has some reason to do so.

More likely though, it simply didn't have a functioning laser because it was:

A) A small reaper.

and

B) Just got slammed by a fairly serious anti-ship weapon.

All this ridiculous posing about "plot armour" is pretty damn silly, because that right there is a perfectly logical explanation.

Perhaps it could also damage itself with its Thanix at such a close range?

Very good answer. Thanix causes huge explosions, as we know from the Collector Ship.

Or it was charging.

Or malfunctioning.

Whatever.

Why does a butterfly enthusiast run around with a net and a set of pins instead of just using a flamethrower?

The Reaper charges its lasers by walking, When it was hit by that orbital strike its systmes/eyes? malfunctioned and it became blind. Also when it fell its step count to charge its laser reset itelf to zero.

It doesn't exactly look like the normal reaper we've come to know and love, maybe this kind doesn't have the lazor

Who said it was a laser? Maybe it's like Sovereign's guns in that it fires molten metal at high speeds. Could be that the Reaper was out of ammo.

And/or if it wants Shepard, I think there wouldn't be much left to recover after a blast from such a weapon.

It does have the laser/metal gun. In the "Fall of Earth" trailer, another Reaper walker is seen shooting down shuttles with it.

This laser doesn't have a thermal clip!

Or perhaps it forgot to renew its license to bear arms and Harby took away its lasers.

Perhaps it was a very old reaper, like one of the first and didn't get retrofitted with weapons like newer reapers, it could be a leader sort of thing.

Or perhaps they are kinda like the Predators and hunt for sport, only using lasers when there is no other way of killing the target it. a shuttle getting away...

But yeah plot armour works as well :>

Because the Reapers are misunderstood, they just want to give Shepard a big hug.

The Reapers are the good guys. Shepard is just misunderstood. If Shepard saw the Reapers goals, he would join them.
