Why doesn't the Reaper just fry Shepard with a laser instead of chasing him in the Reaper base demo?

Unless they want to renew Firefly for another season, I say nuke 'em.

Lol

But in all seriousness, I believe that it is quite possible that the Reapers are making more of themselves to fight an even bigger threat. As far as we know, there is no reason for the Reapers are wiping civilizations. Unless it's for the lulz.

Would be a serious plot twist if the Reapers is actually the good guys fighting against an even greater evil that doesn't even "assimilate" their enemies.. :P

It's much better than what I'm thinking how it will go. I hope the Reapers have an actual reason, instead of being some retarded BS like "typical villians hellbent on our destruction with no actual goal behind it" or whatever.

Either the reaper was too small to have a death lazor

It's the same type of ground Reaper thingy as in this trailer. It has teh lazors.

As for charging, that is silly. The Reaper are hyper-advanced machine gods, I'm sure they have weapons that take less than 2 minutes to charge up.

The only real reason is the magic power of plot.

It's interesting that the Reaper was hiding underground like a cockroach instead of, you know, being busy with the whole pew-pew-lazerz thing you'd expect it to do.

Could be damaged as mentioned earlier, could've been discharging it's eezo core that it uses for all it's mass effect related technology like FTL and Thanix style weaponry.
Once chasing its target it could also have realized that vaporizing Shepard might not sit well with Harbinger.

Reapers believe that the none reapers aren't responcible enough to live as high tech societies. They fear that eventually totally annilation will occur thanks to hyper advanced technology. They are attempting to prevent this by assimilating races that they find to be worthy transforming them into a sort of hive organism like the geth knowing that as long as a unit is truly functioning as a singular organism they will be less likely to NUKE EVERYTHING!

Isn't it obvious? The reaper didn't fire it's laser so that Shepard could look cool firing totally ineffective bullets at it while it stomped past the sun creating dynamic god rays and lens flare effect. Duh!

The Reapers are going to make the Commander a offer he can't refuse.

Plus who better to let loose then the one person who can rally what is left for you rto finish off then the Commander let the mouse come to you with it's friends.

Dolphins hurt other sea creatures for fun, so I wouldn't be surprised if the reapers do it for sport, maybe their creator made a small error in their programming (forgot to exclude themselves from the 'reap for lulz' paragraph).

Also, it did fire its laser, but shepard ate it, they cut that bit out of the demo to make people buy the game.

The only fail about reapers wanting shepard alive is the fact that they fired a thanix at the sr1, the collector ship wasn't that well at precise maneuvering to purposely miss shepard while they were blasting it -> they could have vaporized him at that point.

You know what this actually makes sense really. I don't think that the Reapers are emotionless and personally it could have just been "playing with its food" until it gets smacked in the head.

I do also like to believe that the Reapers, even on how much they HATE Shepard are still wanting him alive to turn him.

Weapons take a while to come online perhaps? I don't really remember if that reaper was a ship or what though.

Either way, it took the collector ship a while to power up and get all of the systems back online so you can assume it will take time for a reaper to become fully functional too.

Maybe the laser thing was damaged in the initial bombardment.

Take your pick from this list of possbilities:

Lasers were not accurate enough to hit Shepard specifically
Lasers were occupied with something else
Lasers were charging
Not enough power/not online yet?
Lasers may be damaged from a previous battle
They wanted him alive (frying him with a laser might destroy Shepard beyond the possibility of retrieval) for their own reasons, or because the Reaper's superior said so.
It may be a trap
The Reaper just didn't think of it
The Reaper was an arrogant megalomaniac
The Reaper prefers a more visceral kill to lasers. Wants to see blood, not ashes.
Similar to the above, the Reaper likes playing around with it's victims
The Reaper didn't think sniping is sporting.

Something to add to your list there is that Shepard might have been outside the avalible targeting arc for that weapon.

...Possibly.

I am going with the reapers want him alive unharmed. Lets take a short trip back to ME 2, every time you fight the general that is taken over by harbinger; What does Harbinger say about shepard? capture shepard alive unharmed.

So if Harbinger and the other reapers want shepard alive they will more than likely go out of their way to insure he isn't harmed.

I really hope that the reapers do not come out as the good guys; that will be completely lame and I will lose interest in ME. Leave the Reapers as the bad guys who just kill off all the advanced cilizations because they are bored and can do that or they do not want a super advanced civilization that can challenge them.

Perhaps it was a newborn (read: recently activated) Reaper and did not have full control of its abilities yet? Similar to the T9000?

Reapers want Shepard alive (for some insidious reason), frying him will be... probably inconvenient. Maybe we'll find out later.

It wanted Shepard alive.

Took the thread this long to get it.

That reasoning fails. We already know people can be brought back from the dead, they could just kill him, and bring him back after the reaping. They killed him once.

That reasoning fails. Lasering Shepard or blowing up the vehicle that Shepard's in would tear Shepard apart. Harbinger stated and continued to pursue killing Shepard "with his body intact" Lasering Shepard wouldn't keep the "in tact" part in check. To me, it looked like the Reaper was going to capture Shepard and not stomp on him. Think about it, why would Dr. Kenson want Shepard alive after he was beaten up in Arrival? They all were indoctrinated and the Reapers were already on their way to Earth. In fact, by hours they would've been by Earth when Shepard woke up. Thus with the evidence provided, the Reapers have a purpose to keeping Shepard's body in tact.
