 I rolled up one recently, but found even the first Irenicus dungeon to be very difficult. They have very poor combat capabilities, and seem so vulnerable. Single weak foes, I can still sneak up to and backstab, but against multiple foes, I somehow end up getting gangbanged.

What should I look out for? Your experiences? Recommended tactics? Thanks.

Use their poison ability and traps.

some ideas:
Get the Short Bow from the slaver quest asap. (+1apr)
Do the Mae Var quest,
Arbanes short sword is available easiliy
Get the short sword from the cowled wizard in Umar Hills
Invest in Move Silently and Hide in Shadows
Divide enemies
Use Poison especially against mages
Get the Ring of Invisibility (Lich in City Gate district, which you can cheesily kill with a scroll of undead protection)

Remember that you don't have to fight everything. Much of irenicus dungeon can be snuck through or avoided. Look for summoning items like the Horn that summons a berserker or the Kitthix spider statue. If you use the Item Upgrade mod, the improved Kitthix really becomes a good friend.

not sure if the oil of speed has a class restriction, but those really help early on - both with hit and run due to speed and the extra APR.

Put all of your starting points into hide in shadows and move silently. Then just run around corners and backstab everything.

Try to get the Boots of Speed ASAP. Until then, use potions of speed.
