Edit: Just to clarify:

I know that locking in companion relationships is a feature, not a bug. What I'm reporting is a situation where locking in a companion causes the game to report an incorrect sequence of events and play out the wrong versions of dialogues.

So:

I'm trying to play all of the various romances out in both rival and friend variations, and I'm currently working on a rivalmance with Merrill. I do a little background reading, and discover that you can build up a friendship with Merrill until Mirror Image rolls around, at which point your entire friendship value flips to rivalry if you refuse her the Arulin'holm.  I was nice to her for all of Act 1 and the beginning of Act 2, and I accidentally maxed out her friendship in early Act 2.

When I killed the Varterral and went back to the Keeper, I refused to give Merrill the Arulin'Holm. She gets angry, but her relationship bar is still stuck on max friendship! The finale of her quest fires properly and she still yells at me properly for not giving her the artifact. But when Questioning Beliefs rolls around, she's acting as if I gave her the Arulin'Holm after all, and the romance scene back at Hawke's house is clearly the Friendship scene I've already watched on another playthrough. My guess is that subsequent Companion quests check the relationship value, rather than your actual quest choice.

So, if/when the next patch rolls around, would it be possible to tweak the Mirror Image quest so that it temporarily un-sticks her relationship value, sets it to Rivalry, and then re-sticks it if you don't give her the Arulin'Holm? Right now it's quite easy to accidentally confuse the heck out of her quest continuity.

Looks like for now the best workaround is to go back to my start-of-Act-2 save and be just mean enough to her to prevent her from maxing out too early.

...you know what? I'll edit this back into the original post.
