my issue is that garrick is mute and blocking the entrance to the burning wizard. i talked to him when i first got to beregost, but i declined his quest of guarding some lady. i left for a while, found some bandit scalps and returned to sell them to garrick. he was just outside the door at the burning wizard, my character can't get around him to go inside, and he won't speak with my character. some merchants in the naskel carnival also do nothing when i try to talk to them. i have patches and updates, i'm running it in windows 7 off of cd's.

Did you try to 'charm' him?

If you're not going to do anything with him, you can just ctrl+y kill him and not lose any rep. Or if you have room in your party, ctrl+Q to add him.
EDIT - not sure if you use BGT, Tutu, or plain BG1. It's been forever since I ran plain BG1, not sure if those hot keys work in original BG1.

oh yeah, vanilla BG, no ToTSC, with 1.1.4315 patch and baldurdash fixpack 1.1. originally, i had forgotten to patch the game and just started playing, it also happened with that character. so i applied the patch and fixpack hoping it would fix the save game, which it did not effect. then i started a new game, but the only difference was that now i can trade with the nashkel smith, i couldn't with the first character. i think there may be other mute npc's whose names i can't remember, so i was mainly concerned about playing a broken game if essential characters wouldn't speak.

Look in the \\Baldur's Gate\\readme and tell us what game version you have please...eg. Version 1.3.5521
In most cases the patch is bgintl114315 14.3mb & it needs to install FROM INSIDE your \\Baldur's Gate folder... I also suggest you install somewhere other than programs and run the game as windows XP service pack 3 administer.
To be clear;
I suspect that the patch failed... possibly because windows 7 helpfully ignored you and did what it decided was the best way to handle the patch installer program.

i copied the saves to a temp folder, uninstalled, reinstalled (movies and all) into a directory not in program files, and installed the patch from within the game's folder. it gave me an error the first time i installed the patch, with a suggestion to try again. i did, and there was no error after the second try. i then installed the fixpack and ran the game as administrator after copying the saves. garrick was still outside of the burning wizard when i loaded the game.
i just wanted to make a let's play of baldur's gate. i've restarted once already, so i was just trying to avoid restarting again. thank you, i really appreciate all of your help
Edit: forgot to mention that ctrl+q saved the game
