Yeah, um, half the people I know are unable to speak English properly. I don't care, usually, because I do it too when I'm talking with friends and hanging out, but there are times when you need to be grammatically correct and soo many people have no idea how to do that Posted Image

Let's see, I took two years of Spanish in high school. It was a requirement to have two years of a foreign language to get into college.

I don't remember a damn thing.

I can tell people to not drink.

"No beber!"

It will be very useful for those moments where I'm trying to stop the poisoning of a foreign dignitary who only understands Spanish.

Oooh, oooh! I also know "Caiete la boca!" I'll save that for my hispanic femme fatale. The b!tch never knows when to keep her mouth shut.

^ Yay! Fake sexism. Posted Image

That's perfect. You'll never need to know how to say anything else, that's plenty Posted Image

Hmmm yeah, I remember how to ask if someone wanted to smoke after class.
I remember asking my teacher that. Her reaction was hilarious.
Haa high school was fun Posted Image

Heh...asking my teacher about "bailar interpretivo" (interpretive dance). He raised his eyebrow at that one. And I think we did a skit about barbecuing pigs in the pool...We we're learning about summer themed words and phrases, and we just thought that there aren't enough people in the world who barbecue pigs in their pools.

So, yeah. Spanish class was fun, but we just don't have any sort of emphasis on learning it. We just sort of pretend to learn it.

What are you talking about? Here in Florida we barbecue pigs in our pools all the time. It's like a Floridian summer tradition.

But yeah, I have a feeling I'm going to need to re-learn it all if/when I move back down to Miami. Lots of Spanish people there. Not so many in the area I'm in now Posted Image

Good to see that some people over here have some idea of Cervantes´ Language. :)

Just some tips for Godak:
-"Cáyate la boca" is not necessarily nasty or aggressive by itself, so if you really want to sound offensive go for "cierra la (censored; send me a pm for nasty swearing) boca". :D

-You will NOT stop and Spaniard from getting drunk; it´s far more possible that you´ll get drunk with him/her. I have worked with non Spaniards and particularly Americans for a number of years doing archeology (yep, legaly desecrating graves!) and they always end just like that, drunk and talking in a funky mixture of Spanish and English. =]
-Grilled pork is a great thing for Mexicans. We also do that; in a slighlty different way but no less exagerated. "Baile interpretativo? What do you mean by that?

-And a bonus track for Bunnie:
-Probably this is not the best place to talk openly about this due to legal repercusions but, I think I can give you a more or less decent list of terms for stuff to smoke. In the end, we live in front of Morocco so you may guess the rest. :bandit:

Just an FYI, my Spanish teacher was a very strict Mormon. Bad words were a no-no. We couldn't even say "crap" in his class. Posted Image

However (IIRC), "cierra la boca" roughly translates to "close the mouth" or "close your mouth", right? So, what's bad about that? Or, am I completely wrong? Posted Image

EDIT: Oh! You censored a word that was in Spanish...heh, I thought you were censoring the meaning. Silly me. Posted Image

Swearing is something I do not generaly do even if I speak in Spanish but if you guys want a list of Spaniard curses (and some very hard core blasphemies of common use even among die hard Catholics from back home); feel free to request it via pm.

That´s something I hate about language teachers in general: cursing and swearing is a huge part of a culture; huge to the point of allowing you to understand the levels of polite language use, and representative of those things that are offensive or sacred to a particular culture. Most of my interjections in Spanish would be considered quite blunt swearing here in the US, while back home are just "soft bad words".
And that´s why Spaniards use so much swearing when they talk in English: because most of it is not a big issue and even sometimes you´re even expected to use them. On the other hand,  in most of Spanish-speaking America it would be considered extremely unpolite and when translated to English, it makes you sound like brought up by barbarian cannibals.

Why would we need to learn finnish? There's really no use for it here, nobody speaks it, and we don't listen/watch anything from Finland, really. I don't know why you're being taught swedish either, to be honest. English should be enough. Guess it's tradition.

At least you get to learn another language...

In the US, our education system works something "Lololololol, english iz bestest langawuage evar! We no need silly foran words!"

The only opportunity I had to expand my linguistic skills was in my freshmen and sophomore years of highschool, where I got some basic spanish down.

No, we DON'T have to learn finnish in Sweden, it's the other way around. As I said we would have very little use for finnish.

We study English from the first grade, and then a third language from like the 6th grade. French, Spanish or German, at least those were the choices when I went to school.

...man. What did I miss?
So many posts since I visited, I always fall behind :/
Things that cracked me up:
bunnie.riane with her bad ass, Dark Lilith with her great ass :D and all in between...
Lea being eloquent and outspoken as always with her replies...
Torture? You people...
And all the mulit-gen cultural which should be spelled like multigentural? That is some major interesting mental steroid factor for me. I was always interested in such things. Region where I was born was like a Melting Pot back in the days. Much to learn about/from.
Some time ago I learn that my last name is an accual word in scythian language...I googled it coz it didnt resamble any known language I could place it in...

There's a huge gap between first grade and ninth grade (when my school system starts foreign language learning). Also, our brains are able to learn more when we're younger.Posted Image

Scytian and Sarmatian languages belong to the Norteastern Iranian group; so try with someone who knows Farsi.

And regarding torture, it´s not really the most appropriate word for Lilith´s and Raine´s activities... :D

It's actually a very good system. English is probably one of the best languages to learn, thanks to the US government propagating themselves across the world, so I'm kind of lucky that it's my native tongue. Still, I wouldn't mind being raised in a society that values multi-lingual abilities...

I would of liked to learn Spanish and Mandarin, seeing as a large portion of the world is hispanic, and China is becoming a massive player is global economics.

Sorry, but Swedish is pretty much only spoken by Swedes. Posted Image

Uhm, yeah. :P

I've studied english (of course, for 12 years in school and bombarded with it everywhere else), french, spanish, italian and some latin. Don't remember much of it but it's good to have some of it in the back of your head since many languages are more alike than you'd think.

Most of my own education came through the Scottish system.  Bell Baxter High School, class of 2001.  And no, I'm not sharing my yearbook picture because I look like an arrogant jackass with a huge superiority complex in it.

No sir, not really. Catholic schools are the best "factories" of deviants, free thinkers and in general, interesting people on the face of planet Earth.

The best part is "Sister Doe/Brother Doe" triying so hard to make a devote good catholic out of you; and somehow, everything gets upside down. You actually turn a holier-than-thou moron or a pretty interesting, though quite much inverted (at least to their standards) individual.

Lilith is the living testimony of how the Pope´s minions are uncapable of breaking interesting people. :)

Russian would be quite useful for at least scandinavian countries, for economic purposes. Russia is the "sleeping giant" alongside china.

And I've started to study japanese. Why? Well to know how to order beer there and to avoid pufferfish :-D

Not only romanic; just take a look at the Germanic branch. When I lived in Norway I was so jelous of Germans... They learnt Bokmål even faster than I could learn Portuguese or Italian. It was even better with Swedish and Danish people. Lucky ones...
