I played the demo, finally. My impressions were mixed. DS3 looked pretty enough with settings maxed out. I noticed a few low res textures on Guiscard, but the environments looked polished. Animation in dialogue was awkwardly stiff. Guiscard and Odo moved their limbs and heads as if their torsos were glued in place and struggling to break free. Expressions were virtually nonexistent and when they appeared, too artificial. It looked like they were both running through a looping animation routine when speaking.
Voice acting was a mixed bag. Odo was okay. Guiscard was better. Anjali sounded terrible, and no, not because of her archon echo. Rather, her voice actress's delivery was awfully wooden.
Combat smacked of "Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance". Normally I would consider it a good thing. I loved those games. DS3, unfortunately, has pretty lousy controls. Other than the intuitive W,S,A,D arrangement it was clunky. Camera control was downright terrible; with barely any ability to zoom out. Spinning it was cumbersome in the midst of battle.
Tap combos, special moves, and blocking were all there. I did like that blocking matters, as it did in "Dark Alliance". I also liked that health was not replenished with potions. It made it so I could not steamroll battles and conveniently heal when I got careless. The mode switching idea was a good one, I think, and I enjoyed hopping between spear stabbing and setting morons on fire.
Art was okay. Contrary to what someone else wrote earlier, armor does change. I found a breastplate for Anjali on the first map and equipping it altered the design of her outfit from neck to hips. There is definitely lots of loot around to play with, but most of it just shifts stats around. Typical "Diablo" fare, I suppose.
What I saw of the story was okay. The premise was nothing special, but there was enough of a hook to make me curious about what happened next. Jeyne Kassynder interested me as an antagonist despite being a bit of a cliche.
Animation was smooth in movement and stiff during combat. Anjali's spear swinging had that DA2 frame skipping effect to convey a sense of speed in her attacks. Movement also reminded me of DA2. The dreaded hipsway has returned! Although it is smoother in DS3, I find it as sad now as I did then. But really, I was not surprised after the massive chest sizes.
All in all I do not see myself buying this game at launch. It *feels* polished, but between clunky controls and a bland premise, I am hesitant to buy it on day one.
