Conjecture drawn from prerelease info-possible mild spoilers.  Avoid if you want to go into ME3 totally unspoiled.

From what I can gather from information released to date including E3, it looks as if the reapers (would that be capitilzed? /shrug) appeared and just suprise attacked Earth.  I find this somewhat hard to believe (if your thinking of bringing up the jack-hatted argument about whats believible in a sci-fi game so whats it matter-go frackin shoot yourself now) that the reapers could just sneak up and gank Earth.

From what I can gather in game, the Earth mass relay is a sub-relay that connects to a major hub relay at Archturus.  Meaning the reapers, or anybody else would have to go through the major hub relay before heading to Sol.  Hence the reason humans constructed a major military installation at Archturus, and have a whole fleet stationed there.

I'm not saying the buk of the reaper fleet could not steam role over the Archturus fleet, I'm just saying it seems kinda ridiculous that A.-they could not even get a message off.  Or B.- That the entire Sol system would not have lit up like a hornets nest when they lost all contact with Archturus station.

No warning? Seems pretty flakey to me.

Not so fast, bucko. There's still oodles of stuff we don't know. It's far too early to be jumping around waving your arms and screaming "plot hole".

Plus, these are the Reapers we're talking about. They built the tech that the galaxy uses. Who knows what they could have done with the Alliance's sensors or comm systems.

Considering the Collectors used Reaper tech to isolate human colonies during thier attacks it would be logical that the Reapers would use this tech to get the element of supprise for the attach on Earth

...or they got to Earth not using the Relay network. I don't necessarily like it myself, but we can't forget that the Reapers built the entire network in the first place--they didn't originally have any shortcuts to each system that currently has a relay. They flew there the old-school, hard way.

Or they turned up at the mass relay, went into FTL and got to earth before any communications got through?

Even in the Mass Effect universe, almost all communications are still limited to the speed of light.

The point of the Arrival DLC is to deny them access to the relay network. They didn't approach via the relay.

In any event, the first and smartest thing to do before engaging an enemy is cut off his communications network to delay or blackout the ability to call in reinforcements. It's not unheard of to have Reaper-indoctrinated agents knock out Earth's com systems before going in for the kill.

We don't know everything about Reaper technology. Stealth systems? Invisibility cloaks?

They could also simply use an indoctrinated agent to hinder communications or whatever else. On a different note, didn't the news report trailer feature some "unconfirmed" rumors about a mysterious fleet of space ships above Europe? Earth did hear about the Reapers, they just didn't take it too seriously =/

The indoctrinated agent deal seams plausable. Or they took the scenic route. The black-out explanations is totally absurd.

"Good morning world, this morning there is no communication from the entire contenent of Asia.. Thats right, no communication in or out for over 2 hours now, not even any cars or planes No cause for alarm, just go about your daily buisness......" pffft.

Not any worse than Russia getting the jump on the USA in MW2.. or anything else that happens in MW anyway...

But yeah, people forget that in ME not only is the galactic community actively & willfully ignoring the Reaper threat, but that after Arrival, the Reapers most definitely came into the galaxy the hard way.

I'd say the Reapers BUILT THE DAMN RELAYS I'm sure they know how to reprogram a subrelay into a primary relay even if they need to slap on a few extra parts.

The news report trailer mentions the alliance fleet massed in high orbit to try and stop them. Also the very first trailer it mentions that alliance forces retreated to regroup and left earth. Now we have two reports mentioning an organized response to the reaper fleet. No they didn't just sneak in and attack we were ready and waiting then got our asses handed to us.
