 is it wrong if that pic reminds me of deus ex? I mean the low resulution and the eye-thing are pretty iconic to Deus ex, looks like walter simmons

Honestly, the human male squadmates wouldn't get nearly as much heat if they were aliens.  I doubt people would write Kaidan off as whiny if he had a chitinous exoskeleton.  And Jacob wouldn't be called bland if his skin secreted hallucinogenic pheromones.  I find the human characters engaging.  I don't imagine James will be an exception.

Here's some food for thought though:  Zaeed.  He's a human male squaddie that is seldom described as boring, despite not even having any real dialogue with Shep.  From what I can tell, if people don't like him it's because of his uber-renegadeness and jackassery in his loyalty quest.  (And many love him for those very reasons.) 

I think the problem is that both Kaiden and Jacob behave like typical nice guys - polite, dutiful, follow orders, etc.  I'd like to see Vega be somewhat of a departure from this.

mm. I kind of disagree. The reason why Garrus and Tali are so popular is because they have awkward behavioral tendencies that are easy to relate to. Look at the success of Alistair from the Dragon Age series. He was awkward, witty, and comedic even during situations where the characters were faced with utter destruction. Same with Morrigan - even though she was more of a cynic. 

Kaidan is extremely serious, and I think that draws away from some of his charm. He has awkward moments, but they're usually because he doesn't like being restricted by military formalities, not because he's actually awkward. Many people like Kaidan's character, and while I enjoy him, he isn't nearly as compelling as some of the other characters in the Mass Effect world. To prove you wrong, I LOVED Zaeed. Even though he's a wrinkly old man, I kind of wish you could have romanced him simply because he has a compelling back story.  

Jacob.. uh. His dad.. has a harem and uh.. he uh. Uhm. He was in the alliance.. then he had a thing with Miranda.. I don't know. He didn't have much of a character at all. He seemed closed off? Maybe that was his character? 

Another thing that attributes to this whole issue is the backstories of a lot of the alien companions. If you had made Jacob an infamous merch/ex renegade cop who dedicated his life to wiping out entire crime circles with a small team. Or what if Jacob was from a colony that was in a religious war with a robotic race? Surely his character could illustrate their plight. 

Ah well. That's just me though.

Ditto, thats why I don't think I would mind an ugly hippopotamus of a man. As long as he is as compelling as say - Zaeed, or whatever.

This is an excuse I've heard a lot of Kaidan and Jacob fans use. I'm bored by their personality, not their face. I like Ashley and Joker and they're both human, they're just not dull as dirt (in my opinion only, obviously).

People just see characters differently, that doesn't mean they're giving someone a pass or not based on their species.

Zaeed is one of my favorites.  And your assessment seems to be accurate- that when people don't like him it's due to his... work ethic.  And maybe you're right.  I could just be making excuses.  Still, I can't help but feel as if Garrus wouldn't be quite so popular if he were a human.  It's impossible to know for sure, though.  So I'll end by echoing your desire to have Vega stray from the beaten path and tread into bad boy territory, or something else entirely.

Does help that armor doesn't seem to be generic (see my post on the previous page). Chris didn't confirm generic alliance dude though. Just concept art AA dude. 

Though it *could* just be lighting. 

I go with it being either Vega or some other new squaddie

I can get into Vega being somewhat of rebel... soemone who has a problem with authority but is kept around because he's so good at what he does.
