Those aren't mutually exclusive categories - ethnicity and colour are not the same thing, after all!

No, he's Hispanic, at least according to the leaks from the beta. He speaks Spanish fluently and he tends to include Spanish words in his conversations when talking to Shepard/other crew members. He uses Spanish words liberally. His last name sounds Hispanic too ("Vega") and he doesn't really look white in any of his current builds (tan skin, non-white facial features, etc.). Unless Bioware did some seriously drastic changes to the character then he's probably going to remain Hispanic.

I would even go as far as to speculate that his name might not even technically be "James," but he uses it because it's easier for others, since "Steve Cortez" isn't technically named "Steve" either (Vega keeps calling him "Esteban" instead, which seems to be his REAL name). There's a chance that "James" is just the Americanized version of his real name, "Jaime". On the other hand, his name COULD be "James" and he could just of Hispanic-American descent (possibly Mexican?).

Oh, this is also true. I'm Hispanic and everyone mistakes me for being white since I'm pretty pale.

Ah, FoxHound, this is something I was curious about, and I was thinking on asking you specifically. Does he comment he speaks Spanish? Or does he actually uses Spanish sentences?  This worries me because when I was playing Red Dead Redemption, it was painful to hear Mexican characters speak perfect English with American accent, but stuttering Spanish with a horrible accent. It completely ruined the immersion. :crying: His voice actor better be bilingual or mimic a good native accent.

He seems to use Spanish words in his sentences. He doesn't actually just start speaking Spanish, but he'll randomly (and not so randomly) interchange English and Spanish words when talking. I ALSO hope that if he remains this way that his voice actor is bilingual or can at least mimic good Spanglish, because it would kind of suck if his Spanish was bad, ha, ha! D:

This is good to know. If he just throws in Spanish words in his lines, it's not that important that he has a good Spanish accent, because he's still speaking English. But if he starts speaking proper Spanish... I remember this character named Luisa from RDR. She said "Que Dios lo proteja" with the worst accent ever (:pinched:). It made the character sound laughably unrealistic. I hope James' VA's accent doesn't hurt the character's credibility.

Spanish people are white. Spain anyone?
(and don't get me started on classifying people into neat categories like on the census because that **** just gets confusing)

I have a pet theory that about 95% of the guys who criticize his overly muscular appearance are envious of it and it makes them uncomfortable since we all know men gain pounds and pounds of muscle mass just by sitting in a computer chair. They are either really large nerds or scrawny nerds.

QFT! I'm sure there are guys out there who legitimately dislike his look for personal taste reasons, but I'm sure a lot of them are annoyed that Vega looks like an "alpha male" and that might seem threatening to them or their manSheps if they're very insecure in themselves. I have found through life experience that people just like to hate on things that are different/they are not, from both ends of the spectrum. I've been both, severely obese and now I am entirely different (200+lbs, but it's mostly muscle) and I kind of get the exact same shabby treatment I always did, but from different people ("Oh he works out, he MUST be a douche! Let's completely and utterly be rude to him without actually getting to know him!"). [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/angry.png[/smilie] [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/sad.png[/smilie]

Eh I don't know, since I'm not a guy I can't really speak on the their mindsets. I understand many people have insecurities, but I really hope when we're simply talking about a videogame character this isn't true at all.

I just want to respond to this. As a guy, I can safely say that we are terribly insecure about ourselves. Our bodies our...ability to "perform"...our "manhood". *cough*

I can tell you right now that as a guy who used to be very underweight (I'm 150 at 5'8" in case anyone is curious) and the big strong guys easily made me envious. They still do. I'm just better at handling it. Now I just admit that I want that for me...and I would want that guy who has 175 lbs or 200 lbs of pure man-muscle on me. ;)

Funny thing about men (and this is a study that I'm actually doing a paper on right now) is that they get really pissed off at things they have some sort of attraction to hence hate crimes against homosexual men. Unconcious desires. For men who have biases towards homosexuals, they found that they are more likely to be stimulated by gay pornography then their secure, non-bias, heterosexual counterparts.

Pretty much. There is a notion that only girls are insecure about themselves, but the idea of masculinity and what it means to be a man has shifted drastically in the past fifty or sixty years. Men are immensely more aware of their own self-image and body image than they ever were. Pay attention to advertisments as a good example; we often hear of women complaining that they are objectified in today's advertising campaigns, and while this is entirely true, you'll soon realize that men are pretty much getting the same treatment. It creates a different kind of consciousness for men when they are constantly bombarded with images of "perfect male bodies." More or less, men hating on Vega's physique is no different than women hating on "the bimbo with the big breasts." It's all about self-image and insecurities, and it can be really problematic because it just leads to judging without actually giving each individual the time of day.

Personally, and not just because I do it myself, I never feel negative things against guys who work on their physiques. Some people find it pointless or stupid, but being in shape takes a lot of effort and good discipline. Whether they are good individuals OUTSIDE of an exercise setting, I can't judge without getting to know the person, but at least that counts for something, right?
