Resistance is Futile. Support James Vega in Mass Effect 3 and he'll save kitties.

Thank you C:
Ahaha, nah, my Shep looks so different than yours. He's got another hairstyle, brown hair and brown eyes. I've been told he looks a bit like Alistair

Nonetheless, reading comments on the Kotaku article for the new Homeworlds comic with James on the cover, it's nothing but judgmental MF'ers trashing Vega because he looks "like a jock." I hate it when gamers get so shallow, judgmental and bigoted towards a videogame character like that, especially when it's simply because the character looks buff instead of looking like Bill F'ing Gates. So partially in opposition of those presumptuous SOB's, I want Vega to be a hit character. Even if they still hate on him though, I'll still enjoy him, just as I enjoy the company of Jacob Taylor despite the hatred towards him.
The only thing I hope for the character is, if his surname is any indication of his background, his voice actor should reflect Vega's ethnicity. I don't need him sounding like Speedy Gonzalez, but I would hate him if he sounded like Channing Tatum. I hope BioWare got someone of at least some Hispanic descent to play him.

That's a concern some of us have already expressed. We want James to have a credible accent. When I was playing Red Dead Redemption, I was dismayed to find out that almost every Mexican character had a perfect American accent, but an awful one when speaking Spanish. Only Captain De Santa's VA sounded like a true Spanish speaker. It was something painful to hear because it ruined the immersion. But when I was watching the credits, I found out that Rockstar had hired Hispanic actors to voice the Mexican characters. What's the point in hiring proper Hispanic VA's if their accent is as terrible as their non-Hispanic counterparts'? I think James' VA can be any guy, as long as he's a good actor and he can speak with a credible-sounding native Spanish accent.

Do we know that's he's supposed to be a native Spanish speaker? I know the script shows lots of Spanish words thrown in, but that's not uncommon amongst a lot of the Latin American diaspora in the US & Canada and it's not always a sign that they speak anything more than English-accented "Kitchen Spanish" with a grandmother a lot of the time. I usually hear that kind of thing IRL as more of a subculture reference than any real proof of fluency.
Unless I have missed a line that gave a definitive answer to where he's from?

I say yay! I'm having my hubby dress up as him and I'm going as Shepard to our midnight release. So it'd be cool knowing there are others out there doing the same thing!
Also - here's Chapter 8 of Under Better Circumstances

Your question gives me the opportunity to clarify something. I haven't read the leaked script, so I don't know if 1) he's really fluent in Spanish or 2) he just randomly throws Spanish words in his dialogue. We have the second scenario if he says things like "Let's drink some cervezas." In this case he's speaking English but changes an English word for a Spanish one. He's not really speaking Spanish, and the accent is not a big deal. He's just using Spanish loanwords.
There is a linguistic phenomenon known as code-switching which is the use of more than one language when speaking. An example of this would be: "So you todavía haven't decided lo que vas a hacer next week". Or "But I wanted to fight him con los puños, you know?" Notice how these sentences are a mix of English and Spanish. Code-switching is practiced by fluent bilingual speakers. This is when having a good accent is important. If he's gonna say something like "We're done here, Loco/Lola. Es hora de irnos", and he says the "Es hora de irnos" part with a thick English accent, then the character will suffer. At least for me.
Like I said before, I don't know how much Spanish will be present in James' lines. As for what you said about this "kitchen Spanish", it sounds like it's simple borrowing of Spanish words, although I'm not sure. And rumor has it that he grew up somewhere in the desert, presumably the SW part of the USA, although it's not specified if he was born there (in the USA) or he migrated from a Latin American nation when he was a little child.

Geez, sorry, I thought you have this info from somwhere and now you're asking if it's true. Anyway, I hope his VA from beta is permanent. Especially when Vega's famous " Hooooly sh!t " from this trailer is very similar to VA from beta.mauro2222 wrote...
