I don't really participate on the forums and usually I'm here just, you know, lurking, but the whole Vega hate gets on my nerves, so I thought I would just come here and leave this little sketch to show my support : )

So, sooooo cute. Both of them! I'm so happy that James Vega is getting great artists to draw him. He needs more love!

And you did great. You took my silly, but still very much serious, idea and turned it into something amazing.

the only similarity I can see is the haircut and skintone (and even those are subject to differences). Hell, some fan artists even got as far as changing Vega's body type and jawline, as well as downright removing his facial hair, making him look COMPLETELY different, regardless of style.

It is because of style. And ability. Some people can't draw muscles, and Vega is the Captain America of ME ._. It's not a matter of they're trying to make him look better, so much as they drawing a new character their way. It will never be "perfect" or exact. Especially when interpreted in a cartoon style.

Hey now, I didn't say it was bad. I'm gonna go as far to say that it's even a significant improvement over the original, as it adds a great deal of personality to the character (see what a smile can do? A lot.)

It has nothing to do with being bad or not. I don't usually pay attention to it because it's kind of subjective and I for sure accept critics (and I assure you I'm never satisfied with the things I do. But that's great because it makes me want to improve). But this was just one quick sketch, with the only reference of a very crappy and not very detailed pic, just made to add to the fun this thread is, nothing more, nothing else. The way so many people on these boards seems to take these things just annoys me, because some of you can get pretty stubborn and hateful (not you specifically, ok? ). Fandom can be the most delightful and funny thing, and yet so many people insists on taking people down and claiming their opinions as if they were the valid ones. That's why I mostly lurk.

But coming back to Vega, you know. I don't get why people is so hateful when we didn't ever see an expressive pic of the character and we don't know ANYTHING about him. Can't just people wait and see, and then judge? And by 'judge' I mean expressing an opinion, politely... not cry the hell out of a character. Because honestly, if you hate so much a videogame character you don't even know, I don't want to know how you deal with real people (and I'm using a generic 'you', just in case).

You know, Bioware really needs to add a pet kitten for Vega in his section of the ship. Or through in cat related dialogue ANYWHERE in the game.

Right now, Vega isn't a person. Or even a character. To me, right now, Vega is a piece of art that was submitted to my critical eye and I found him wanting. I complain, because I'm going to pay money for that piece of art, and I feel like I should have some small say as to what my money is going to buy.

A lot of people found him wanting, and the lack of any sort of characterization, background information or even a facial expression allowed everyone to assume the worst about him, and now those feelings of scorn are now completely tied to his current appearance. First impressions are everything, and Bioware kinda dropped the ball by showing him off before he was ready for the spotlight.

Let me guess, the new normandy is going to a gym installed. I really hate the way this character looks. He's too muscular for the ME universe. He looks like he stepped out of gears of war, a game for children. I really hope this just a stunt to get the ME community fired up.

Right so.. Is Jacob not part of the ME universe now? Vega isn't much bigger than Jacob.
Heck I would argue that Vega's bodyshape is more realistic for one training to be a soldier whereas Jacob's is made for underwear modeling.

And Sgt. Whiskers is deeply, deeply, frightened by your definition of "a game for children."

Eh, I think that comment was a hit and run.
I've poked fun at Vega too, but I get that some guys can build muscles easier than others, and that yes, there are men that look like Vega. Some people seem to be offended that he's big. Do all the men of ME have to have the same body shape?
Meh, I'll keep teasing, but just because he can break your face with his thumb ...

wait, what point was I making?

I find it more "offensive" that Shepard looks like a super model, body wise. It's a little hard to take him seriously as a soldier sometimes and my biggest issue with the character creation mode in Mass Effect (and Dragon Age) is that I can't edit body parts, height, weight, etc. I get the reason why the options are not there, of course (too much time and effort spent), but I still wish it was possible.

And yes, Vega's body could be natural. There's nothing exaggerated about him, really. I used to work as a personal trainer and his body is perfectly achievable. I guess because I've worked with "huge guys" before I don't find his size that impressive or overboard.

Thing is, you won't be paying for a piece of art when you buy the game, you will be paying for a character (and everything else that'll come with ME3 ofc).
So until we know how he is, as a character and not only a piece of art, you can't say that your money isn't going to go to something that you might actually consider good.

A lot of people found him wanting, and the lack of any sort of characterization, background information or even a facial expression allowed everyone to assume the worst about him, and now those feelings of scorn are now completely tied to his current appearance. Then this would be BioWare's fault and not of the character's aspect and your time would be better spent requesting more information about him than commenting on his appearance.

Bioware isn't going to release that information just because I ask it, and potentially because they haven't even written it, yet. Once they do, I'll be sure to see how well it meshes with the character design, and i'll criticize that as needed.

That pic? it's tangible, it's in the here and now, and I can judge it for what it is.

I'm not sure what kind of characterization or facial livliness you expected in a single still promotional picture but I suspect your standards are a wee bit high when it comes to concept art...

And do please go into a gallery and tell the artist that you want to buy a piece but you should get some small say in how its painted. See how that goes over and then try that argument again. ;)

@IggyD You can judge the image yes, but you can't judge the character in the image nor how his personality relates to his appearance, so saying that his appearance needs to be changed before we do is somewhat harsh and abrupt in my opinion.

You can derive a great deal just by expression, stance, scars, the condition of clothing, the TASTE in clothing, and so on.

Going by your analogy, I may not have a say on how the finished product that the artist is trying to sell me should look, but i can say "No" when he asks me "Do you like it?"

Furthermore, freelance artists that are contracted DO have to deal with feedback from their customers when they make a product, and whether or not they get paid depends on how well they satisfied their customer's demands.

I'm not disagreeing with your general point here, but it's a little difficult to discern anything about Vega from his state of clothing and his taste in clothing when he's only been shown wearing what seems to be pretty standard military wear. Which tells us nothing more than the fact that he's a soldier. No?
