I think they are one and the same. It's improbable that there would be two different characters of the same name, both of them Alliance marines. Anyway, this gives us a better of idea of who James is and what he does, assuming that they are the same character...

I'm almost completely sure the guy in the letter is called James because that letter was a reference/easter egg to a Bioware employee called... well, James.

That makes sense, but it doesn't detract from the fact that we know of two Alliance marines named James, one of whom served with Ashley before ME1 and one who will serve with Shepard (and possibly Ashley) in ME3.

I must obmit it'll be cooler if the two James were the same, rather than separate, as it will lend more "interconnectedness" to the character. Idk if that makes sense.

I'm not sure there was really anything wrong with Jacob per se, other than his abilities were useless to me, and the fact that you could only romance him by sexually harassing him made me avoid him for every single FemShep playthrough.  Had it been possible to have a normal conversation with him, he would have been just fine.

In his "normal" suit, he looks like a character I would like to meet. The problem is in his alternate appearance... too generic from those pictures. Hope I'm wrong, of course.

I'm a straight-female myself but I would like to see a character (perhaps Vega) strictly for male sheps. One of my brothers that plays Mass effect would like a romance option as such so, I'd like that for him and others that also would like that option.

I don't understand the boring thing. He could very well be the first male "badass" with some hispanic heritage (people in mass effect are mixed) I don't see why he can't be. There is a variance of skin tones if that is what you are going by. That little picture has no detail. It's too soon to tell and in any case, James may end up drastically different looking than he does in that image.

I think his character design might not be finalized. The face in the CE image might just be a place holder. Because anywhere else he's appeared at E3, his face is conspicuously masked. So unless he's trying to hide some gnarly Garrus scars, I think they just don't have a face to show us yet.

Let's hope Bioware learned from their past mistakes and made this guy actually appealing.
He seems a bit like a Thane substitute though, Looking all badass, using a sniper rifle and wearing leather.
