I have three ManSheps; one is hopelessly devoted to Liara, one is hopelessly devoted to banging every chick on the ship, and one is already gay and very, very lonely. So that last one would say "yes please" to James Vega, unless he ends up being a complete doofus or douchebag.

Kidding aside, maybe there have been tech advances.  Maybe James is more machine than man.

Makes sense since it seems that Legion and probably Thane aren't on the squad.
As for James' hair, all we have is a low res concept art picture, I wouldn't jump on board to giving him a haircut yet.

I for one am waiting to see more about him.. As long as he's interesting, I don't care if he looks a little generic, but that's a wierd assumption considering we haven't seen anything of him properly yet, outside of one very blurry picture from the collectors edition.. Also, I like his hair.

That, and he shares a surname with one of my Guild Wars characters, that's always a plus.

Maybe the alliance gave it some tweeks. Maybe James is on steroids. Maybe the codex was changed. I dunno.

Circular argument.  It's not generic armor because you haven't seen anybody else in it, and the other person with the armor is Vega, because it's armor unique to him. 

The armor is a reskin of N7 armor parts Shepard can use in the second game.  It's not unique.

I have to admit, I'm quite intrigued. They haven't given us much in the way of personality other than he's a soldier type, but they haven't really said much about the characters anyway. I'm curious as to his version of the events of ME1 and ME2--he's supposed to reflect a new player, after all. I'm guessing there will be a lot of corrections on Shepard's part.

True but that's not proof it's not generic

Actually the alliance armor seems to be a darker blue. (the guys inthe transport car to pick up Anderson was wearing darker blue armor). I doubt it's the default alliance armor for all mooks. (You also see another dude in the darker blue armor walking next to a transport vechical). Seen here. not only is the armor a darker blue but there's yellow on it.

And Sanders is the last name of Kahlee Sanders - One of Kai Leng's victims. Its also stated that Kai Leng will be after Shepard in Mass Effect 3. Based on his description in the Retribution novel (which I skimmed through on Amazon) it describes him as being pretty close to that concept art of him. 

I'm assuming he's an homage to the whole Kai Leng thing - or he is Kai Leng in disguise trying to assassinate Shepard for the Illusive man. But then they changed the last name to vega. 

EDIT EDIT: Either way I'm 100% sure he has something to do with Kai Leng.

I still like the idea of Kai being James trying to assassinate shepard by joining the squad, although the post above cleared a lot of my speculation. It would also be weird if he had a run in with Anderson since they fought one another. Blahblahblah. I rarely speculate or try to fill in holes without evidence. It kind of sucks that it isn't true. T___T Ahh well. Back to the drawing board.
