Hey guys I started a new profile on ME 2 from an ME 1 character I did (he was a soldier), I was just wondering if anyone else has played through the ME 2 campaign as an Adept with Grunt's "Fortification" ability which I am doing now. Thoughts on this class or suggestions?

Fortification is a serious contender for the worst bonus power in the game (IMHO it would be met by Shredder Ammo in the finals). Barrier is a much better choice:
a) Barrier is instacast, Fortification has animation that delays the activation.
Barrier can be activated even when you're stunned by a rocket/flamethrower.
c) Barrier benefits from the biotic cooldown upgrade (-20%), Fortification has no similar bonus since it's a combat power.

Yeah I get where you're coming from aesthetically, but the power is pretty sub-par. I suggest if you want something a little more Soldier-like, Go with Flash Bang from Kasumi, Or wear armor that fits the part. Adepts benefit quite a bit from Warp Ammo, which is sorta more like a soldier, and it'll deal extra damage, and double damage if your target is affected by biotics (Pull, Singularity, Slam).

For the reasons Kronner already listed, get rid of Fortification and grab Barrier if you really want a shield power.
For an adept I'd prefer something with a lower cooldown. Stasis is probably the best bonus power you can have, particularly on the higher difficulties. Warp Ammo is decent too because it provides a bonus without hogging your cooldown. But the bonus it provides is not that amazing. Energy Drain is awesome because it allows you to destroy shields and get a bit of extra defense while you're at it. So...
I recommend Stasis. If you don't have it, Energy Drain.

At Veteran and below you don't need extra defense as an Adept, things should die too quickly to be an issue, because just about everything can be pulled and blown up or thrown off the map. At the two higher levels of difficulty, the defenses usually don't last long enough in combat conditions to be worth tying up your other powers for 12 seconds, ie the shields last 3-6 seconds in combat and you have to sit and wait awhile not being able to do anything. For adept as Termokanden says Stasis, Energy Drain, or Warp ammo are the most common and Domination can also be fun. I have run Barrier on a couple of Adepts but for the most part I usually spec out or just don't use it other than just before combat to give me a slight boost finding the best cover, but once in combat, no it just doesn't get used by me much, cooldowns are toooooo looonnnnngggggg.

Stasis,Stasis,Stasis....
IMO The best for most chars. I'm currently playing an Adept for the first time, and I used Stasis on my last playthrough, as a Vang. Stasis has some crazy effects on some enemies. Capt Wasea, The boss at the end of Samara's recuit mission, is killed instantly when hit with Stasis. (obv bug) The Flying drones are killed when the duration wears off. The falling effect gives 3x-4x damage bonus. It can be used as off or def. I never put more than 1 point in it. This benefits from the short duration, allowing you to take advantage of the damage bonus, with Stasis quicker.
I play on insanity all the time. The abiliyty to bypass defs is GOLD. A few hits with Stasis on Geth Primes, followed by direct joint firepower, and they are done.

Fortification would've been good if it actually added an armor buff instead of just buffing your barier/shield.
Sadly it's the shredder ammo of the protection bonus powers.
