It should be noted that there has never been any problem with the save file transfer itself. DA2 has never corrupted any data when importing saves. There has however been some problems with what DA2 does with the often times inconclusive and incomplete data available to it, the save files from the original games leaves a lot to be desired. Some of these issues have been addressed. Others have not been. What I know/think I know:
  • Architecht dead/alive: Characters get it right. (Confirmed)
  • Leliana/Alistair romance -> Now recognized even when importing from
Awakening/DLC. Faulty saves with no approval for characters not in the current campaign was the cause. DA2
now works around the problem by skipping approval checks and only looking at the romance flag. (Confirmed)
  • Nathaniel's continued existance: Still only reconized if you take him to the Architecht, this is a problem with the Awakening save. Anyone left at the Keep is supposedly flagged as dead. It can't/won't be fixed with changes to DA2. (Read it in blue somewhere, seems accurate.)
  • Zevran's death: Still not recognized if you interrogate him before killing him. The Zevran killed flag is only checked if you kill him immediately without waking him up. There's nothing DA2 can do about it. If anyone know the location of the flag please tell me so I can fix this using a save file editor.
  • Zevran romance -> Still bugged (Heard it and seeing as how it was the most messed up to begin with, for reasons unknown, I'm inclined to belive it.)
You do not need to reimport and start from the beginning to take advantage of the updates. DA2 doesn't read and interpret the DA:O data until it has to. For instance Leliana didn't do her approval check until you started the conversation with her. After the patch she wisely skips it and if you were to run into her again she would do the same no matter your previous encounters. So there's no real need to start over from before a bugged cameo either.
