Relationships are a part of the narrative. It seems some people are obsessed with the sex aspect of it more than the relationship itself though.

Exactly.

Agreed. A romance told well can be better than the climax of the romance itself.

Personally I don't want to see sex scenes like TW2.
I think the tasteful scenes of ME1 mixed with the individuality of ME2 would be perfect.

Not at all, I'm just pointing out that the form is extremely important to convey the substance.

Without a very realistic scene in front of you, one that expresses things like touch, movement, skin, flesh, etc. veeery well, you'll always end up with a cheesy computer sex game in front of you, regardless of the "emotion" that it tries to convey.

What do people mean by "tasteful"? (just curious)

Make take on "tasteful" is a romantic but mature sex scene without turning it into digital porno.

A tasteful sex scene portays sex how sex should be, an emotional act of love.

For example, this.

That's just my opinion though.

If that video had ended at 1.30 mins it would have been tasteful.

I agree with you though, I think that Mature games made for an adult audiance should reflect that in the content. I'm not saying there should be pixle porn but that it's in game content should be appropriate to it's audience. If Mass Effect was a film and not a game, no one would be shocked or appalled by a sex scene between the protagonist and his love intrest in the film. I think the same should go for games.

If video games want to be taken seriously as an art form on par with film, then why not act like it? Treat the protagonists relationships with other characters as seriously as they do in films without the childish "OMG I saw a boob!" bullsh¡t. It's already accepted by mainsteam film, I see no reason for it to be different with video games. That applies as much to sexual scenes as it does to those with violence and swearing, if the script calls for it then thats that. If it doesn't then don't add it in just for the sake of it, but if your making a game that's 18 rated with mature themes throught the game, why suddenly backpedal when it comes to sex?

If you want an audience to engage with these characters on an emotional level that's on par with books and film, then the subject matters tackled in books and in film shouldn't be shied away from. Wether that be violence, depictions of drug use, swearing or scenes of a sexual nature. It's this shyness that prevents games producing classics on par with the likes of Trainspotting and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Which I believe it has the potential to do.

Seriously. The game is rated M and TW2 got away with it. While Im not asking for hardcore, I'd like to see R-rated.

Honestly, I agree that we should at least go back to ME1's style for the love scenes. Not too scandalous, but not too tame either. However, and unfortunately, this most likely wont be the case. For ME3 we will most likely end up with more Disney Channel saturday morning special type scenes that involve yet more awkward dry-humping. The only thing missing will be the patented Fable "fade to black" and bed squeak sounds followed by Shep making a few grunts and groans.

Overall gameplay, Im %100 positive that I will be thrilled with ME3. However, the love scenes are among literally a handful of items that Im worried about. So much so that I actually dread pursuing the rest of my relationships with said ME1 and ME2 LIs. Good news is that if they're too bad, I can just skip the actual scenes like I do in ME2.

It has romance so its automatically a dating sim. LOL you do realize the most it takes is 5 minutes if even that.

OP, you could just rent a porno.

Mass Effect does not need to be the TW2. Go get a girlfriend/boyfriend.

Really?  we should just get a Porno if we want sex scenes in the game?  what you rather they dry hump with their clothes on?  The way I see it the romance part of the game is NOT that important but if their going to include them then at least make it right.

I don't see any reason for there to be something very PG. The game is afterall rated M, and you can see far worse in a highschool health or science class. Not to mention, other games have scenes that are even more explicit than the ones in ME1 - examples being the GoW games and TW2. Even many films and tv shows that are easier accessed by children have more explicit scenes. Even online pr0n could be easier seen by children. I don't know whose eyes they are trying to shield - or why people see something so natural and romantic as such a taboo. Just because a bunch of puffed shirts have a problem with it doesn't mean it should go away.

No such thing as tasteful with Fox.  They would have us believe that sex doesn't exist.

I completely agree.

As I said in my above post; I think that if games were treated with the maturity that films and books are treated with, then we would begin to see much better games, with characters that you can actually take seriously and relate to. This is of course not just in reference to sex but all adult subject matter. Without such there would be no Once Upon a Time in America, no Trainstpotting, no Pulp Fiction, no One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

For games to progress and become on par with films and books they need to address and tackle the kind of mature subject matter that films and books do without PG13 bullsh¡t in an 18 rated game.

Edit: slight re-wording.

Further Edit: Typo.

Exactly. I mean, I'm by no means looking for something that could be considered AO content, but something that is consistent with the rating. If people are able to deal with the many instances of death, destruction, and above all other things, Jack, they should be able to deal with a bit of skin. Passion and romance can still exist with a bit more shown. Just because it shows more doesn't make it instantly tasteless. That scene that someone posted earlier with the pool (not sure from which game haha) was really nice. And it showed how they were expressing their love for one another, or at least that's what it seemed to be doing. It's not like anybody wants to see anything meaningless and animalistic, nor expects to see it.

There should be an options box in the menu for levels of nudity and censorship. 18+ players can turn off all censorship, but it a person perfers they can turn it on to full and have ME2 levels of nudity.

That's what I think.

Personally I'd be dissapointed if Bioware got their level of detail from RedTube videos, it's a classier company than that.

Nudity can still be classy though. And really if people didn't want to see it they could just not do the romance. Free speech shouldn't be limited because people are prudes imo.

It's a minority of American's that seem to think anything too risqué is evil and adult's shouldn't be allowed to see it.

As for people who argue that children might get a hold of it, as you say it's nothing new, it's not as if people under the age of 18 have never ended up seeing content they're not legally supposed to. I highly doubt that no one under 18 has seen American pie, or Pulp Fiction, or Snatch or any number of 18 rated films. Just because the potential is there for people under the legal age to see that content doesn't mean that content should be toned down or removed.

The only thing the people that make the content should consider when making their film or book or game, is their product. Not kids who sneak into their mum and dad's film stash, or parents too lazy to control the content available to their kids.

The only thing they should be worrying about is the quality of their product, if it so happens there is violence or sex or drug use depicted, then sure whack an 18 rating on there and be done with it. They shouldn't have to think about kids sneaking into their parents dvd cabinet and watching stuff they shouldn't.

They should not specifically tailor an 18 rated product to suit a group of people who shouldn't even be using said product.

If Bioware are making their game more tame because of under agers who aren't even supposed to be playing their game, then they need to get a grip.

I agree. TW2 did it and of course DNF had nudity. I liked ME and ME 2's sex scenes but ME2's Miranda scene was much better with a simple mod. I wish some developers wouldn't be afraid to so some nudity like CD Project.
