I think I'm the only person who found Orana to be not bad looking. People use her as an example of how the new design is "awful", but what they fail to take into account is that she's a slave. She's going to look malnourished. She probably would've been beautiful if she wasn't a slave.
She would've been much better looking though if she didn't have purple lipstick. Made her look like Tarohne
Sorry Eth, but she was ass ugly, and it wasn't malnutrition. She isn't the only one...how about the guy in the Darktown that sells poisons with his beady eyes and mule ears. He looks like he was a reject from playing the Summer theater's verion of "A Midsummer's Night Dream." Or the ugly elf dad of the girl who was abducted, and she wasn't that pretty either, but he was so ugly. Or the elf prostitute guy, with those f'd up eye of a really weird blue?
Humans are supposed to like diddling elves and messing with the because they are supposed to be beautiful and handsome. Most of them just made me want to gag.
And for f's sake, please, please, please BioWare, drop the beady eyes, mule ears (from WoW, which I always hated), and the guppy face. Seriously, they don't need to look like humans. But if designers and artists can't make them different and beautiful, go back to beautiful humans with pointed ears so I don't either want to kill them with fire, or hand them a bag to put over their heads while I have to talk to them. Because right now, that is the only thing I can think of when I look at them.
This is how the elves should of looked like (females)

Shiny, scantily-clad anime-inspired elves kind of don't fit within our setting, don't you think? The ones in the image are kinda creepy, in a "be one of us, Gerald" kind of way.
Wait, so how are you guys going to have elves in the Dragon Age anime?

Yeah. One model, looking nearly identical & wearing the same things.
If CDPR committed a copy/paste mistake, the lack of unique models is it. And no, a different hairstyle & a few freckles do not change that fact.

If something is not done well then it’s better if it’s not included in the game.

Much preferred the DAII elves to the humans with glued on pointy ears from DAO. They look like a unique race now, much more elven than their DAO counterparts. Same for the Qunari.

Agreed 100% about the ears. But only the PC has this problem, and it's probably because elf ears don't fit in helmets.
Which is why I use this fine mod, along with the no helmet one

In Temeria. Not in Thedas. Not only do they look copypasted (apart from Iorveth, who sure is a very goodlooking fellow), but also very human, which is one of the things held against DAO elves by some, and a little bit on the ugly side.
Plus elves acting like that in Thedas would start yet another war. Not a good idea, considering.

Thats all well and fine but DA is generic fantasy. It is what it is and changing it is only going to make it worse. As a consumer I will take issue with ridiculous changes, personally.
The issue at hand being that Bioware doesn't want the DA franchise to be generic fantasy.
So the generic dual-dagger wielding rogue stereotype is now the rule.
The stereotype sword and shield/two handed weapon fighter who can't use a bow is now the rule.
The flashy gestures super fireball tossing mage stereotype is now the rule.
Does anyone know which dictionary Bioware is using for the meaning of "generic"? Cause in Origins I could build a unique rogue who used twin axes, or an axe and a dagger, or even :gasp: a mace! In Origins my fighter could choose to forgo a shield for a one handed sword and dagger, and still provide ranged support or decide to deal some damage with their bow while enemies closed on their position. The mages, well, mine went for ability to deal damage with magic instead of whacking things with a staff. I built several really powerful ones; without any leaping or sweeping ninja staff moves at all. Now we are restricted to generic weapons and classes so the DA franchise won't be generic.
Whatever you say. I mean I asked Stan how they were going to avoid the anime setting, when they announced the DA *anime* movie, but that probably one of those pesky different dictionary things again....

Furthermore, Jaheira was ****y when crossed, stubborn, very outspoken and unpleasantly direct. How refreshing after having to deal with elves in countless games, who are either whiny emo-kids (Merril and Fenris, I am talking to you!!!!), or cute girlie-like. (Elfquest, I hate you!)
Not even cold, aloof, arrogant Tolkien-elves can we get. Jaheira, I miss your bickering!
Amen brother, amen. Jaheira at least had personality. People loved or hated her character but she always got a reaction based on personality. Merrill is just...tepid, timid and contradictory to her own nature. Fenris was a walking cliche of a revenge protagonist from any media targeted at angsty teens who cut themselves. Their depth of character just didn't seem to be there, and I really did try to look. Jaheira might not of been everyone's favorite character (I thought she was great!) but she had backstory and motivations which were not always bland, transparent or contradictory to her personality/ethnicity.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I didn't think she was ugly, and I'm sure with some proper meals she might look better. I also didn't think Lia was too bad looking either. Elren was ugly sure, but he's a single dad who's stressed out about a murdering psychopath that targets young elven women. Bound to make him look like **** eventually.
I don't mind there being some ugly elves. Not everyone is drop dead gorgeous, and the elves have been living in slums for centuries now.
I also don't think there was a Codex in Origins or DA2 that said humans prefer diddling with elves or that it happens a lot. Maybe in other stories and games and whatnot, but Dragon Age isn't those things.
And I think the new elf design can be used to make elves beautiful. Not all, but a good majority of them. We have great examples of the new elf design where people look great.
- Merrill
- Athenril
- Fenris
- Orsino
- Zevran imo looks good but for other people probably just looks decent for a different elf, but if they maybe tweaked him to look a little more like Origins whilst still maintaining the new design, he might be better.
- Lia imo
- Marethari
- Ineria
- Fenarel
- Paivel
- Ilen
- Variel
- Other Dalish
It seems that the Dalish specifically have the beautiful aspect, save for one old elf in Act 3 who seemed to be going blind and bald.
If they put more effort into designing the majority of the elves instead of giving us the horrific elves of Kirkwall that were poorly designed (and you could walk through
Interestingly, there was at least one elf in Origins who had her ears point to the sides and not upwards.

Look closer. TW engine does the clothing a bit different so it's easy to overlook if you don't pay attention, but the outfits are composed from a number of different elements put together "randomly" for each character -- they have shirts of three different lenghts, some wear undershirts and some not, there's presence or lack of the extra equipment like belts, bags etc and the actual shapes of these vary.Persephone wrote...

These are the post-Tolken/ D & D elves that you are talking about and it has been the standard for what people think of elves for the last sixty years. I don't see why they just didn't do something with the eyes by making them more oriental rather than what the did the entire facial structure.

How I wish elves looked in the early concept art. Why is it that BioWare can never live up to its concept art on any level?
