Valora is another case of someone supposed to look less than beautiful - her betrothed keeps comparing her to a mouse.

Barbossa wh*red himself around.

Jack wh*red himself around.

Elizabeth.... didn't. And Will didn't.

So two.

As for that cartoon character, dunno who it is but it's a cartoon. Doubt they'd show her wh*ring herself around.

No, but apparently sl-tty, scantily-clad, pirate-inspired women do...

Completely missed the point of my post.

Well, I did say I wasn't seeing your point.

unless your point was that Bioware's not afraid to show scantily clad characters?

I must've missed the parts of the movies where they did. More importantly, their dress code is nowhere near Isabela's. And like you admit yourself, there's other pirates who don't **** themselves out. So that takes care of the "i've never seen one" argument.

It's Elaine Marley from the Monkey Island series of games. You heathen. Posted Image

I was sarcastically pointing out that apparently shiny, scantily-clad elves don't fit Bioware's "setting," but sl-tty, scantily-clad pirates do.

I thought that was quite an obvious point I made, so I'm not sure how you've missed it.

To you. Other people actually like the new design.

Just the same i think we can agree the design is highly controversial --seeing the opinions divide-- and that's not as good as universal acclaim?

I think the major issue is the fidelity of the design. Bioware only spent time making the major elves look good which left us with a bunch of rather shoddily designed NPCs. If all of the NPCs were treated with the same level of quality, which is something we had in DA:O for the most part, then I don't think the divide would be so wide.

THIS^^^

I've been saying this for a long time now. Bioware only spent time developing the elves that actually mattered.

There were also ugly elves in Origins.

You are going to post images of these ugly elves in Origins right?

Were I playing the PC version of Origins and could take snapshots freely, I'd spam this thread like clockwork. As it is, I can only show a few. Deygan and Cammen I've already shown, but then there's Valora from the CE origin:

and a few NPC citizens in Denerim as well. Some outside the Alienage definitely.

So not only can you tell she's an elf but is also better looking then most of the elves in DA2. And this elf was supposed to be somewhat ugly, just ask her husband her refers her to being a mouse. Got anymore?

Jack routinely visits Tortuga where he wh*res himself around with.... well.... wh*res (who slapped him). Plus he does seem to have a record with various women. Tia Dalma, Anna Maria, etc...

Barbossa suggests that he and his crew took many women to bed in Curse of the Black Pearl, but it wasn't enough. IIRC the line was "All the food and drink and pleasurable company"

So.... when elves in Origins are supposed to be ugly there's nothing wrong with it, but if they're meant to be ugly in DA2 everyone starts throwing a tantrum because they're ugly?

And I thought she was called a mouse because of her squeaky voice.

As I said though, I don't have the PC version, but I'll dig around on the wiki for some pictures of elves.

I don't know. But elves have to be improved. Please, for the love of god. They are very ugly in DA2.

None of these guys have any particular reason to be that ugly.

There are more, in Denerim and the Alienage, but honestly, hunting ugly elves by reloading old saves and taking screenshots is a bit tedious.

There's much Elvish ugliness in DA2 too, but denying there was in DAO is... showing a bit of selective blindness, IMHO.

I didn't say she was ugly - I said somewhat - which means "In some degree or measure; a little" - unlike in DA2 where they are OVERBOARD ugly. So try making another generalization.

I'm not sure how surprised I should be by the apparent criticism of "the new elves are ugly, therefore inferior in design". The, shall we say, less easy on the eyes elven characters look like the product of a quickly banged out character morph than an inherent racial design flaw to me. It's not as if DA2 elves are incapable of being attractive.

I could make something like this in the Origins toolset if I so wished.

The first one has a chin the size of Texas, and the brow to go with it. The second one looks like he's had a close encounter of the truck type right in the face (it's more obvious with a lateral view, but I couldn't get a decent screenie)

And I could reply, "what's wrong with Orana?". I didn't find her particularly ugly when I met her (nor particularly beautiful either). Just a bit emaciated, but I thought it to be due to circumstances.

And for the record, I happen to prefer DAO elves, but denial can only go so far ;)

The new elves are inferior in design because Bioware made it that way - they felt the need for a new art direction for the darkspawn, the elves, and the Quanari that are receiving a lot of controversy over. Sadly, I can’t call the elves in DA2 artfully done without smirking.

And yet I see a great deal of criticism at them having unattractive faces, which has precious little to do with their redesign.

The only issue I see there is the chin is not as angular. The 2nd elf doesn't look like his face was smashed
in.

Why do people believe slaves are kept in bad shape? Owning slaves is a status symbol. If they had bad teeth, patched skin, or any other deformities that looked badly on the owner. Slaves were often bred or sought for beauty,
power, stamina, etc.. Depending if they were used for love, fighting, cleaning or dying.

Or do people actually believe nobles like to have ugly slaves in their homes to exhibit with all their wares?

Personally liked both models- the new and the old.

The old was a reminisce of Tolkien type elves maybe not in terms of height, but the general appearance. The new design gave DA elves a little more of their own species identity- a certain uniqueness I guess (at least that's how I felt).

I like variety/originality and get tired of stereotypes (not to say I don't accept it or anything). When I first played Origins it kind of irked me seeing elves a head shorter than humans- I imagine them taller/as tall as humans, but it was something new and interesting that I grew to accept. DA2 elves were a surprise... neither bad or good, just the fact that they really changed the design- I will say this aside from the major names among the elves you bump into in Kirkwall the rest are... well they leave much to be desired.

Still I support both designs
:)

The internet is proof enough that there are folks out there who like and enjoy even the most vile and disgusting things you can imagine.  That doesn't make them good.  (I'd give examples but that would probably get me banned  )

Haha, this.

To be fair, the chin thing is fairly common in DAO/DA2 in general.  I just supposed that the person who did many of the faces liked larger chins and strong jaws.  Isabella's was originally very strong, Aveline's still is.    It isn't just an elf thing.

Not because she was a slave at all, but because of the circumstances/predicament in which her master was when we found her (away from home, hunting/hunted... can't tell much more without breaking the non-spoiler policy).

Anyway, my taking her as an example is more to prove that beauty/ugliness is the most subjective of things. But I maintain that there's something seriously off in the proportions of the two aforementioned guys' face. Not monstruously so, but something's not right. That was my first impression when I saw them, and I still have that impression after seeing them numerous times.
