The new elves are inferior in design because Bioware made it that way - they felt the need for a new art direction for the darkspawn, the elves, and the Quanari that are receiving a lot of controversy over. Sadly, I can’t call the elves in DA2 artfully done without smirking.

And yet I see a great deal of criticism at them having unattractive faces, which has precious little to do with their redesign.

Actually, it does becuase the new elves have traits that better belong on feline races seen in other media. Elves and Humans are similar except for a few traits in stories for over hundreds of years.

You may be right stagnations kills - it's time to redesign humans as well - let’s go with big clown feet, square eyes, and a squat nose or better yet let’s threw in some bear traits or horse traits while we’re at it. Oh I know, let’s give them traits similar to the Mirluka and Twi’leks.

Why do people believe slaves are kept in bad shape? Owning slaves is a status symbol. If they had bad teeth, patched skin, or any other deformities that looked badly on the owner. Slaves were often bred or sought for beauty,
power, stamina, etc.. Depending if they were used for love, fighting, cleaning or dying.

Or do people actually believe nobles like to have ugly slaves in their homes to exhibit with all their wares?

Not because she was a slave at all, but because of the circumstances/predicament in which her master was when we found her (away from home, hunting/hunted... can't tell much more without breaking the non-spoiler policy).

Anyway, my taking her as an example is more to prove that beauty/ugliness is the most subjective of things. But I maintain that there's something seriously off in the proportions of the two aforementioned guys' face. Not monstruously so, but something's not right. That was my first impression when I saw them, and I still have that impression after seeing them numerous times.

Yet, she was able to afford the use of makeup which is far more expansive then food and lodging,
and somehow had part of her face caved in.

Monstrous is right, and it's not just the face it's the body of the elves as well. So it seems this new model had to go since it has a lot of problems.

Interesting, if Bioware wants to separate themselves from the other creators of fantasy material - why stop at the elves when they can re-invent the humans and the dwarves as well.

I'm enjoying how because you and some other people personally dislike the new look you're saying that it has to go.

I'm not sure how surprised I should be by the apparent criticism of "the new elves are ugly, therefore inferior in design".

Since the elves in DA are supposed to be perceived as pleasing to the eye, a design which widely invokes reactions contrary to that statement may be seen as inferior, yes.

So why can't people just say "Can you make the elves with the new look more beautiful?" instead of saying "OMG kill it with fire!! Get rid of this new horrid design!!"

Seriously, I'm dying to know. I and a few other people have been saying that on this thread numerous times and telling people they should say the same if they want beautiful elves.

They are saying the current design should be replaced because they don't like it. I'm not sure why you want them to ask for just some tweaks instead that would make it likeable -- either way the elves would no longer appear the way they're in DA2 so that's effectively asking for the same thing.

You got me there.

As I said, I find many of the new faces alright, sometimes even beautiful, and sometimes even much more than in their previous incarnation. It's particularly true for the Dalish, because we can compare for most of them, since they have DAO and DA2 versions. And yet, one particular non-Dalish elf is a total failure in that regard.

As for body and posture, I agree with you. I really don't like it. But it's not because I find it too slim, but because here too, proportions are off. Speaking of which, you'll also notice most Dalish in Sabrae clan don't suffer from The Body Problem, probably due to the fact they're wearing a greenish version of the ancient elven armor. Merrill is beautiful when clothed, very fluid. Armor/clothes change the very shape of the body (sometimes not for the better, though).

Funnily enough looks just like a human with pointy ears. She's missing most of the features of the DA2 elves, and some (like the body proportions) aren't visible.

Granted, but they might as well just ask for more work to be put into the morphs and call it a day. The spindly torso and so forth don't have much implication on what shade of makeup a character uses.

Small eyes, small irides. The eye slant is barely there.
The nose bridge is less visible head-on.
The thin body isn't apparent.

Let's put it different. Place her next to picture of Morrigan and hide the ears. See how different they'll look like.

I'm enjoying how you almost derailed someone's thread - when going off-topic - You know like when you pointed out to me that you didn’t want your Darkspawn thread closed.

Back on topic, so your fine with the new faces models and Meril's contoured elf body. Good to know that you find that beautiful.

The faces are just part of the problem so i don't think just calling for better morphs would really cut it. Let's not mistake the "they're fugly" with all the critique of new appearance that is there. Image IPB

Not every species and every single character should look pretty! I actually liked the redesign of the elves it suits better the "lower profile" (nomads or servants) of DA lore.

I wonder if the devs will ever address the elf and darkspawn complaints? I guess if they haven't addressed it yet, they aren't going to doing anything different.
