There were much better ways of making them distinct than popping on big ears, work with the eyes, facial structure, width and length all to make them exotic and not just pop the ears bigger.

Um, just as an artist...keep in mind that those two pictures have very different lighting, which really makes a difference. So, they may look similar, but one is in shadow, one in full light. Sorry, But with that I can't say they are similar. If we could get a pic of similar lighing...then I could compare and contrast. But right now? Not very good examples artistically speaking. Sorry...4 years of drawing naked people speaking.
At least i don't find it much of a problem, although maybe that's different background at work (experience with 3d modeling rather than drawing. Still, they both require familiarity with the same shapes so, welp)

Always found it funny that the english used the world elf for midgets, and everyone else used the term Dwarf. This all dates back to Norse and German Mythology. Guess, the English wanted to be different from the rest of the world.
