I'll just take traditional elves over everyone elses originality.

Which tradition are you talking about?

The Irish legends have elves being indistinguishable from fairies, the Iberian versions had them looking similar to Pan, the Norse had them rail thin with harsh angles, and all the Chistmas shows I've ever seen have them looking like skinny dwarves.

EDIT: Because I forget how to spell sometimes. Okay, a lot.

I don't remember the Irish having any elves in their folklore.  I'm pretty sure they are a Scandinavian myth.

The Scandenavian and Irish did share some common stories in which the Irish faeries serve the roles played by elves in Scandenavia. It has been YEARS since I was in college, but the one of the comparison legends I did a report on was the one concerning a young man who stole magic fish from a fairy (or elf) that greatly increased his sexual prowess, much to the delight of powerful witch. I'm trying to find a link, but sadly Google is finding me nothing but travel information, Thor movie trailers and Asian porn.

Yes please.

But seriously. I didn't think Merrill was too bad, but the average elf in DA2 I didn't like. And I thought they were all to thin, I kept wanting to tell them to take their fingers out their mouths and eat.

What is this pic from, Lineage II?  If so too bad the CG is better than the in game look, FFXIV elves look better in game than L2!

Yeah.

Post-Tolkien fantasy elves (popularized by the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game) tend to be more beautiful and wiser than humans, with sharper senses and perceptions. They are said to be gifted in magic and mentally sharp and are characterized as lovers of nature, art, and song. Often, they are skilled archers. A hallmark of fantasy elves is their long and pointed ears (a convention begun with a note of Tolkien's that the ears of elves were "leaf-shaped")--from the Wiki page/ non-Palin fan corrupted

What would DA2 fans think if Bioware took the "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" elves for inspiration?

*Sits back in chair, hand on chin, pondering.*

Granted the Norse and Danish colonized Ireland in the 9th century so they must have blended culture that was passed down to us today. I saw Shakespeare had his elves as just little people in his plays.

yeah.  Those are American elves but they were taken from the Victorian Age idea of what elves were like.

When I think of elves, in general, I think of a tall slender, but almost aristocratic air about them. It isn't just a genetic thing, although I DO think they, in my imagination of what they are at least, have a certain bone structure, and even balance to their faces. They *are* in my head, like humans, but of a very specific type of look and ilk. The higher elves have classic norther European bone structure, finely boned but *not* small boned, aristocratic carriage, intelligent, slightly aloof. Fine translucent skin, regardless of its colour. Long, flowing, or braided hair. The forest or more nature oriented elves are smaller in stature, more on-par with humans, with more ornate hair decor, earthy looks. Rounder, broader faces, wider eyes, smaller mouths, more energetically spritely builds.

The look of the elves in DA2 contrasted the image I got in my head when I read the DA books. that said, Fenris, his posture aside, wasn't that bad. Still, it was not how I like to picture elves, if I had a choice ( I don't, and that is fine too - it is their vision after all) . I appreciate the artistic out-on-a-limb-ness that has gone on here, but .... it didn't fit the "elves are the most beautiful race" that was mentioned several times in lore. To me.

We all are different though and of course, we all have our idea about what an elf does or doesn't look like. Mine *do* look somewhat human with pointy ears, but with brighter eyes, larger ears and slightly more narrow mouths. Lithe bodies, but *not* anorexically thin. I would say medium to large boned but very low body fat, low-normal muscle tone (they were supposed to be strong after all). DA2 elves were underweight, tiny boned AND under-muscled. If they had just had larger bone structure.....

And boots. My elves wear boots. Ymmv. =D

I honestly thought Zevran got the worse of it. Pinched face does not suit him at all.Image IPB

I thought Zevran looked a lot better in DA2 than DA:O. He looked more human.

But maybe that's the problem?

YMMV, of course.

More traditional American elves are the ones that live in trees and bake cookies. Yeah, Tolken elves are drawn from the ancient Norse mythology that he was a master in and his own imagination. After him, all elves in fantasy were the same. DAII is just stretching that image a bit.

I haven't liked anyone's example of how elves should look yet in this thread. No oversexed anime inspired elves please. Merrill looked okay, I more have issues with some contradictory aspects of how the character was written than her appearance. Though I am no fan of DA 2 elves, they all look bizarrely imbred, as if the entire race contracted fetal alcohol syndrome. I do admire the idea to make elves look more alien but it is far from a good design in my opinion.

Stretching? come on.. WOW did stretching with long ears elves, by the way i have 2 nightelves in that game, one is a druid and another a hunter, they are more beautiful that the blood elves anyway :P

What bioware have done is by far stretching is just horrifiying creatures and bring down the hole concept of elves.

Merrill and Fenris are how the rest of the elves should have looked. I actually winced when looking at Jethann and Orana. DA2 turned a race that was supposed to be desirable and beautiful to humans into a race of mostly hideous creatures.

I liked what I saw in the concept art. It's a shame it didn't make it into the game, for the most part:

Nope. EAWare has already dismissed those rumours.

And give me more elves like the Ssri'Tel"Quessir and Ar'Tel'Quessir.

Toilken + D&D elves.

I like how all of the pictures of elves that people want are just pretty humans with pointy ears; the exact design that Bioware wanted to move away from with their races. Elves as perfect, superior humans is just silly in a setting where they are cast as slaves, the destitute and wilders.

Shiny, scantily-clad anime-inspired elves kind of don't fit within our setting, don't you think? The ones in the image are kinda creepy, in a "be one of us, Gerald" kind of way.

But somehow Hayder’s Razor still makes perfect sense.

Leave it to modders to make a better game - this is probably why Bioware hasn't released the toolset yet.

Why did they want to move away from that for elves, when elves are supposed be deemed beautiful by humans? The Antivan Crows, according to Zevran, prefer to recruit elves because 'humans find them attractive'.

I know beauty is subjective, but the majority of people here seem to either not like the new elf design or think it's just 'not bad', at least where NPCs who have dialogue are concerned. The remarkable beauty and allure of elves as a species seems to have gone walkabout.

So the solution is make them look grotesquely deformed?
