Elves in DA2 are a disgrace to the word and to the race.

I hate to break it to you but elves don't really exist, so there is no such thing as a "disgrace" to a real elf.  Elves are whatever the artists imagine them to be.  Pointy ears really are the only consistent standard I've seen, and I think even that is open to interpretation.

Hate to break it to you but the humans dont exist in the game either - and elves do have a consistent standard as do dwarves.

Here's a few of them

Pointy Ears
No Facial hair nor body hair
Slender, Graceful
Handsome, Beautiful
Fair Skin
Well Groomed

Hair Color/Skin Color/Eye Color - varies within each subrace

There is also other traits that they share other than descriptions - and several subraces that trail back all the way to Norse Mythology.

Hate to break it to you but the word real was never said except by you.

Also there has already been a standard set with elves, breaking from it almost always leads to diaster. As DA2 proves, then again they are just the Na'vi with pale skin instead of blue in DA2.

Also I would love to have the dwarfs changed to be nearly as tall as humans and see what the Na'vi defenders would think then.

Actually they would still defend that, wonder if they buy Apple products as well....

I can't understeand how someone can like those elves... Those are much more Insectoid Humanoid with mantids eye and flat nose... They reminded me the famous grey alien..Zevhran seems a hybrid by a donkey and a rabbit... lol...

Since i prefear way more elves in origins and of course in the witcher 2

Really? What about Anders, who has a build that is slightly more frail to reflect that he's a mage (at least, that's what another poster said on a different thread.)?

Anders has the same build every other human male in the game does -- it may vary a little in appearance depending on what the character wears, but strip them down to the underwear and they all look the same.

What about Lloyd, that fat tub of laziness? What about the two fat people who stumbled across the meteor that was a homage to Superman?

These are funnily enough treated as entirely separate "species" (or creature type) by the game engine.

Why is it that Carver is more muscular than Hawke and appears to be taller?

He isn't, and he isn't. Again, individual gear worn by the character may influence their appearance somewhat, but this will apply in the same way to everyone who wears this gear. Similar to how Hawke can suddenly become extremely buff when he puts on champion armour, and all that muscles mysteriously go away as soon as he switches to another outfit.

But put all characters in one type of clothing, and they'll all look identical.

edit: to put it another way, characters in the game don't have individual attributes for height and body build that you could define anywhere and which would actually affect their appearance.

ok luke sorry for double post... But now they hem ugly.. Even merryl have the most horrible body i ever seen..They should be fixed and i can suggest a way.. Did you remember Aerie in baldours gate 2? Well this is a valid shape from my point of wiew... If you must make them seems more aliens.. But like in dragon age 2 not.. The elves in dragon age 2 merryl included are just ugly.. Merryl per se have a nice eyes but too much bigger.. Infact it seems a mantid.. The flat nose ruin most of theyr faces.. And merryl body shapes is.. disturbing.. when i romanced her and i seen her with that corset on bed...

Forcing the elves to go barefoot in DA2 was really the worst part. I mean, it's like kicking a downtrodden race when they were already down, and stealing their shoes.

I wonder if the alfing race of norse mythology comes from the northern sami with their oriental eyes, higher cheekbones, and smaller bodies than the Germanic Scandinavians? I'm married to someone of sami descent and I'm trying to figure out why my daughter who was just born a few months ago has pointed inverted ear lobes on top..

According to some other thread I was reading, they do have height differences. Maybe not baked into the character itself, but into their unique armor?

Shiny, scantily-clad anime-inspired elves kind of don't fit within our setting, don't you think? The ones in the image are kinda creepy, in a "be one of us, Gerald" kind of way.

You mean the hot-rod samurai over the top hyper-kinetic flipping, leaping, rolling, insta-teleporting waving over-sized swords, sweeping staffs push-button AWESOME fight like a SPARTAN combat setting? Personally, I think it would fit quite well. DA2 isn't about Thedas. Not quite sure what it is supposed to be about, but there are far too many changes and retcons like the elves and zombiespawn to have it be about Thedas. Although I dimly recall seeing something....hm....

Yeah, the Dragon Age setting doesn't have anything to do with anime.... mind you, this was before the 180 degree flip and all the retconning. Guess in the light of DA2 it isn't that surprising.

When you have an anime movie deal, saying anime doesn't fit your setting doesn't quite work, I think.

Dalish I can see going barefoot. They like nature, so it fits their description.

City elves though shouldn't go barefoot. There could be broken glass, feces, urine, blood, etc...

Though I don't recall any city elves (aside from Fenris) that were actually barefoot.

On the other hand... There is no dirt in Kirkwall. So there is no broken glass, feces, urine and even the blood disappears after a few seconds. Funerals are free: Dead bodies slowly descent in the ground and are automagically cremated. :P

You're missing the point, Orana was deliberatedly made ugly and emaciated to reflect her hard life.

Posted Image True.

Origins had more or less the same thing, where bodies decomposed entirely in just a few seconds. Less if you looted them.

Thedas doesn't need a morguePosted Image.

There were quite a few, I'd guess around 30% of Kirkwall's elves were barefoot. Out of the top of my head the maid of that dwarf who ask you to find his sons and Athenril's bodyguards.

I agree.
I'm not too keen to see those elves in DA either.
But as for not fitting in the setting, well, I once thought I knew what that setting was.

But I was wrong! Wasn't I? I never had a clue what that setting was.
I can no longer make myself any kind illusion of understanding that setting, or what fits in or not.

there's nothing wrong with having a long neck. I have one myself.

There is something wrong with doing a bad job designing a love scene that makes the person with said long neck appear like they've been twisted around like a pretzel. I love Merrill, but when I noticed that I facepalmed at how the making of that scene was handled.

I hate how people compare the elves to the Na'vi..... I just don't see how people can see that aside from the lithe body structure, which they were described in Origins to have anyway (Codex, Sten, etc...)

yea not seeing it. Different nasal structures (Na'vi have cat-like noses and their foreheads extend down and become their nose, whereas elves have normal style noses that just extend into their forehead).

The eyes are similar to a human's eyes. The forehead isn't all that different from a human's either. Don't believe me? Well, I've seen plenty of people with foreheads like that.

The Na'vi ears jut out at a higher height and do so in an upwards fashion. Elven ears jut out where normal ears do and do so in a sideways fashion.

I wonder if people realize the Na'vi were eventually designed to have human characteristics
