Um, comparing the proportion of... well, anything, neither part is actually similar. For one, the Na'vi have a nose taking 50 percent of their ugly face.

Apart from that, you're comparing one elf of how many?

^This.

The Na'vi looks like a blue werecat (the wide nose and high ears), the elf looks like... an elf.

Otherwise, I don't know. Some DA2 elves are honestly more eye-candy than in DAO: Merrill, Marethari, Ilen, Pol, Fenarel (mmm Fenarel...). So, yeah, the Dalish in general.

There were ugly elves then, and some nice ones. There are ugly elves now too, and some nice ones. But truth is when a certain Antivan talks about "his high cheekbones" and his charms, I tend to look at my screen in horrified disbelief (every. single. time.).

What I don't like at all, though, is the weird mantis posture (but there were posture problems in DAO too, when wearing leather armor). And, globally, I prefer the human/elven faces in DAO, because they were sharper. So, maybe it's what the elves suffer from. Not the new design, but the new engine?

@OP: Honestly those "elves" would look incredibly out of place, both features and err.. armors (and that's the nicest thing I can say about them), so, no.

I'm wondering...

I CONSTANTLY see everywhere the "should of", "I of to" and the like.
Is this some kind of obscure rule in english where "have" can be replaced by "of" ?

Because they are not spelling it right "could've"

Since the elves and Na'vi are both humanoid races, it's no surprise they look similar. Maybe Bioware should hire Brian Froud to redesign the elves for DA3 'cause I love the way some of my fellow DA fans like to whine about how the elves no longer look like Vulcan models for Ambercrombie and Fitch.

I agree with kyuubifred that a lot of the human generic models are ugly as well, like the fat jackass with the infamous "eggplant," but at least he looked like he was intentionally designed to be that way while a lot of the "ugly elves" looked like they were slapped together for an early demo. I realize that my impression is subjective, though.

From a male point of view, female elves in skimpy outfits are in most cases a big visual plus, it is even one of main driving forces in certain games ( Hunted Demons Forge anyone ? ). And the devs know this so they are certain to implement at least the same dosage of them in the future titles. I wouldn't be surprised if they present Tali with some qualities of a "space elf".

Elaborating on what Jerrybnsn said:

Typically, in spoken english people will use the contraction for 'could have' which is 'could've' but it sounds like 'could of' when said out loud. Ignorance to the language simply lead to people writing 'could of' and then it gets worse when you see numerous people doing this and assume if this many people are doing it, it must be right!

It reminds me of how often I see the word 'loose' being used in place of lose. Internets are a dark and troubling place for those of us who put effort in to using our words properly.

....on topic, ummmm, elves and stuff. That is all.

When Dalish text, do they adjust the phonetic spelling to reflect their accent?

Elves just need to be tinkered with again. Perhaps there are different ethnicities that would account for the various (DA:O, DA2 and DA3) elves? That's a neat idea.

I made a more simpler solution for the elf problem:
Reports of a strange, terrible disease that has been effecting the elven population of the Free Marches are true! These once beautiful creatures have contacted a rare disease (Goat disease or GD) whose side effects are, anorexia, disformed cheeks and jaws, large inflammatory of the ears causing drooping, and a large inflammatory of upper bridge of the nose continuing up to the forehead. Please, help us find a cure before this disease spreads to the rest of Thedas!

Hopefully the cure is found before DAIII is released.

Jerry, you're absolutely brilliant.

That's true. Origins had its fair share of ugly elves. Like this guy:

anyone who thought Cammen was a good looking elf must have been on something.

or Deygan. He wasn't too pleasant. His incredibly black Dalish tattoos probably didn't help either:

As for posture, all of the male elves seem to walk as if they have a gorilla on their back. That needs to be rectified

Heh. Cammen is supposed to be a gawky, nerdy elf.
Deygan is fine. It's just the tattoos that make him disturbing.

Oh God, those eyes. Just when they had stopped haunting my dreams, you bring up that picture of that man with his eyes in it. If I wake up crying tonight, it'll be your fault and I hope you feel bad.

Cammen was supposed to be average looking, was he not? But there was another guy, sitting by the fire with the crazy storyteller who was downright ugly. Like "Aaaaahhhh! These can't be my brethren" ugly (yep, shallow Warden is shallow). Funny thing, I once installed  a mod that beautified Cammen, and had to remove it, because it just wasn't Cammen anymore.

And those dark tatoos and the eyes, isn't it a mod too? Can't remember how they looked in the vanilla game.

I sometimes wonder if this is intended so they look "servile", or exhausted from hard work, or trying to spook the shems on general principle.

Cammen was far from average looking imo. But for your other elf, yes I know what you mean.

One thing I hated was how the children literally were the same model of children as human children, but with pointy ears.

as for Deygan, nope that's strictly vanilla.

And to the issue of the elves' posture, I wouldn't mind if I actually saw one of them carrying a gorilla. In fact.... I WANT to see a gorilla in Thedas. Maybe as a companion? You could make him wear armor and he could talk to your Mabari!

yea not seeing it. Different nasal structures (Na'vi have cat-like noses and their foreheads extend down and become their nose, whereas elves have normal style noses that just extend into their forehead).

The eyes are similar to a human's eyes. The forehead isn't all that different from a human's either. Don't believe me? Well, I've seen plenty of people with foreheads like that.

The Na'vi ears jut out at a higher height and do so in an upwards fashion. Elven ears jut out where normal ears do and do so in a sideways fashion.

I wonder if people realize the Na'vi were eventually designed to have human characteristics

Okay. Do a google search for images of Dobby. That was the first thing that came to my mind. In one of the picture threads, someone got a good shot of one of the orcs in lotr that was actually a fairly good DA2 elf. A lot closer than the DA:O elves were.

I was so happy to *not* find Shianni in DA2. I wouldn't have wanted to see what the retcon did to her; the City Elf origin was one of my favorite origins stories.

I also noticed that Orsino, in addition to wearing shoes, also doesn't stand around like he's carrying a gorilla on his back.

Look for the "new improved" genlocks in that Facebook game. Primate [chimp or gorilla] + bronto = new genlock.

Seen them. Not sure if I'll like that redesign until I see it in another game like DA:O or DA2. Though, how a genlock would be taller than a dwarf I don't know....

But I want an actual gorilla as a companion!

There's nothing so attractive as a bear discussing verbal quirks found in spoken English.  Posted Image  Please sir, may we have some more?

To be candid, I paged through this thread and was amazed by how many beautiful elf-faces (in particular, the Dalish ones) from DAO were being used by the posters.  I use one myself.

<----------------

I think those icons are the best argument for how very attractive the DAO elves were in comparison to the DA2 elves in general.  I don't believe that I've seen a single icon used by a poster that used a DA2 elf model.

That being said, I liked how some of the DA2 elves looked: Athenril, Merril, and Orsino.

if you mean you didn't see anyone post any beautiful elves from DA2 then on page 2 I posted Athenril and Merrill.

edit: something tells me you meant what people made their Wardens look like. Bah I feel like a fool Posted Image

Well the main reason for that is you can't play DA2 elves. But after seeing those elves I was completely okay with not playing them. More than fine. Really.

I don't think I liked the look of any of the DA2 elves except Fenris and Orsinio. Merril was decent when compared to all the other ones, but still wasn't a fan.

Shrieks are much taller than elves though. Maybe darkspawnization comes with growth spurt? Or it's the diet.

Actually that could be fun. Also very handy. No problem to find the right gift for them, too. No romance to worry about. Never whining about PC's decisions. Perfect tank. And as long as you've got an elf to carry it...

(Interesting variant on "I want a pony", btw. I wish Oghren had gone that route in Awakening "Hey, Commander You, I want a gorilla!")

To be honest, icons are usually PC created by players with love and patience (and a lot of trial and errors). Plus, the lighting is always good in portraits. If we'd had elven PC, then I'm pretty sure you'd see beautiful DA2 elves as well in the icons.

You must be using a mod, Deygan's tat's are not that dark. (well at least in my game, maybe PC collectors edition had more textures...I don't know.)

You can scroll here for a good look before/after Improved atmostphere mod on deygan.
http://www.dragonage...file.php?id=577

In fact you can see many elves in dao there, the original ones don't look bad now compared to what we have in #2. Imho

It really doesn't matter whatever vision they wanted to achieve they have and we either like it or lump it.
