According to CE details, we can't customize appearance of squadmates?

Most likely. But its not necessarily a bad thing though, each squad mate has a unique appearance. And for once, its not exactly as if they took the cheap approach to it since it takes more time to create individual unique outfits than it does to slap on the light/medium/heavy armors that everyone else uses.

Considering once you had Colossus X armor for all squaddies in ME1 you would stop caring about "customizing" their armor, I don't mind if they stick with ME2's armor/outfit system, on a few conditions.
A little bit more variety WOULD be nice, considering that armor for companions doesn't affect their armor level or performance (as far as we know). However...
It would be cool if they had a few armors for each squaddie. One "balanced" set, and then two sets with different specialties to compensate for/augment the way the companion played depending on how their powers were evolved. Also, please make it look like armor. Ashley's suit seems okay... it look thick enough to get away with having armor plating underneath, even if it's minimal. The others all seem fine so far as well. As long as there aren't any Miranda/Samara/Jack-levels of unbelievable combat gear, I think we should be fine.

But generally you wouldn't get the Colossus X armor until you were pretty far advanced into the game, right? Part of the fun of ME1's armor system was gradually upgrading between armor types until you have that ultimate piece. With ME2, you had some cool-looking armors, but they were all available to you pretty much from the beginning (at least the DLC related ones).

You also bring up a good point--the uses of armor in ME2 vs ME1 are very different. ME2 armor provides buffs to abilities--like increased biotic damage, or decreased shield time--but doesn't change in terms of damage protection (unless you count shield recharge time). On the otherhand, ME1 armor had varying amounts of damage protection between each set and also between each type. It'd be nice to at least see a mix of ME1/ME2 style armor options, that way we get the flexibility of changing how each character looks while also making choosing armor a more meaningful choice when it comes to battles.

I hope they stick with the ME2 system, and they are most likely going to do that. I hated the ME1 armor system because not a single one of the armors you could get for Shepard or anybody that used human armor looked really stupid. Your armor in ME3 looks really nice, and so does the armor of all the squadmates me have seen so far.

I'd really like for us players to be able to customize the colors of our squaddies' armors, a la ME2 color-customization interface. I'm inclined to think that the armor appearance pack included with the CE isn't just a simple "reskin" but--similar to the ME2 armor appearance packs--an entire new armor model.

I'm really hoping for extra armor customization, though. At least, just the colors. Being the OCD gamer I am, I can't stand having everyone with different colors; it looks so rag-tag. We're Spectres, for crying out loud! We run this ship military!

(Just joking, I'm a total ParaShep. But customization would still be sweet!)

I personally liked the ME2 armor system, although I wouldn't complain if there were a few more choices for each squadmember, and I think that their armor should be set according to their class, like in ME2 the only ones that wore real armor (except Shep) was Grunt and Zaeed, all the others wore just regular cloths, even Jacob should have been wearing armor not the jump suit he was wearing, I can see having those outfits while hanging out on the Normandy but they should have battle gear and casual wear just like Shep had.

For god's sake do NOT have Ash stuck in the stupix Phoenix style white and pink armor for the entire game.  It completly ruined her intro in ME1.

You do know that you can change her armor at any time in ME 1?

Right?...RIGHT?

Well, you can't until you recruit her into the team, which is why it ruined her INTRO.  I was fretting over her possably having that armor in ME3 and us not being able to customize it.  Then again, at least she's not wearing high heels into combat like Samara and Miranda...

 Among the Collectors Edition goodies:

"Squadmate Alternate Outfit Pack – New appearances for squad members Ashley, Kaiden, James and Liara."

Does this mean that the appearance of squadmates is fixed like it was in ME2 and DA2, and we won't be able to equip them with different suits of armor like we could in ME1? Part of me wants to see the new designs of the ME3 squad, but part of me also wants to be able to equip my squadmates with whatever other pieces of armor Shepard has in his/her locker.

And does this mean removable helmets are in or out of the game?

Understand something about the what kind of studio Bioware has become under EA.   Armor customization was about as native an element that an RPG could have, but they want to sell this crap to us as DLC now. This was NEVER about scaling back the inventory system, this was ALWAYS about capitalizing on an element that they KNEW role playing gamers liked and would be just stupid enough to pay for.

Both Bioware and EA are well aware of how much ME fans liked armor customization.  The line used (and so many obviously fell for it)  was that gamers didn't want to dress their companions and squad mates.  However, if that was actually the truth then Bioware wouldn't have even bothered to provide alternate appearance packs.   So their stated motivation for removing armor customization was a LIE.

Don't hold you're breath waiting for this one.  You already have your answer.

Miranda is so cool.

I really liked the set armours in ME2, but a variation on that wouldn't be a bad idea. Customisable armour, but a specific style designed to suit the character, would be fine with me.

Wait a sec. I didn't fall for anything. I don't want to dress my companions. So I didn't want to buy the appearance packs, and I haven't had to buy any.

What the heck are you doing with a DA:O avatar, dude?

Unless you think that squad armor customization in Mass Effect is stupid, in which case

Maybe other people would like to customize their squad's gear, make them more effective, and don't like paying for something that should really be in the retail game.

I don't care how customizable they are as long as they have some decent armor with a helmet and not some mask-thing.

Having even one set of squad armor that could be customized just like Shepards wouldn't force you to dress companions at all just provide some additional customization for those who want it.

I think I wouldn't mind this as well--specific styles for each character, but the ability to tweak their look still remains. What I'm afraid of is that each character has 1 main outfit and then 1 alternate outfit once you've done a character-specific mission ala ME2-style. It would be nice to have more variation. The specific existence of a DLC "Alternative Appearance" pack makes me think that we're severely limited in how our squad looks.

As long as the cutscenes take into account of the new armour look. Why oh why would she get out of her Colossus armour and back into the Phoenix every time we hit Virmire?

It's possible they mean appearance packs inside the Normandy. Like, "street clothes" basically. Keep in mind they do name characters that we know for a fact are on the ship.

I wouldn't put much thought into such vague wording, honestly.

I suppose this is possible, but highly unlikely. ME2 DLC appearance packs were for combat, and considering most of ME3 should be taking place outside of the Normandy, I imagine the ME3 appearance pack is similar.

Come to think of it, the only person who looked different on the Normandy in ME2 was Shepard; the rest of the squad retained the same appearance.

A fair question.

I don't want to dress my companions That doesn't mean that I won't do whatever it takes to increase their combat effectiveness. It does mean that I won't give a damn about appearances. I sometimes put Morrigan in the Chasind Robes of Breast Enlargement despite the fact that she looks stupid in them.

As fior whether fiddling with equipment should be in a ruleset, it depends on the game-world. DAO's world has lots of individual one-of-a-kind equipment and a party with no access to the resources of large organizations. ME's world..... doesn't.

Maybe other people would like to customize their squad's gear, make them more effective, and don't like paying for something that should really be in the retail game.

Do you see a Bioware tag on me? It's not my business to care about what other players want.

And do the appearance packs actually have anything to do with making squad members more effective? I thought they were just about, you know,  appearance.

customization was good in ME1, and if you didn't like it they could redo how its done but they keep on this self destructive path they wont have anyone but shooter fans left with a giant continuous game that sells the same content over and over such as CoD or Halo... good luck with that strategy Bioware

Creating new models for each individual character isn't less work than reskinning the same exact armor pieces that Shepard already wears twenty times.

Sure. I think it's a nifty feature to play around with, if only for visual variety. But armour upgrades need to count for something to make it work, inventory wise.

Usually I would go with the "don't assume anything but wait tll we know for sure" argument here. However, I wont for two reasons:
1. The CE description really makes it clear that there will be appearance packs. While that doesn't mean that they'll work like they did in ME2, the chances for a new and better system just decreased drastically and it is a good indication that we will get fixed appearances.
2. This is something that might well still be tweaked before the game is finished, so I think it is worth telling BW that there are a lot of people out there who'd really like to see some more customization options than we had in ME2. Maybe not to the level of ME1 but still, something else.
I personally would prefer a wardrobe system like Shepards armor closet in ME2 with a section for each squad mate.

Thats the way I will be treating it.
