Sure. I think it's a nifty feature to play around with, if only for visual variety. But armour upgrades need to count for something to make it work, inventory wise.
This is very true. Armor should be about more than aesthetics--to make each armor more unique, there should be special bonuses/properties that go beyond what ME2 offered. For example, you could outfit Shepard in a heavy armor suit that provided a lot of protection but limited his speed. Or, you could outfit Shepard in a light armor that doesn't provide protection but does give a boost to his powers. Etc., etc.
It would make the sets a lot more meaningful if they were pluses and minuses to each outfit, rather than a collection of random bonuses.
